Could be Flats but I reckon its the usual Kefu chatter. If it is, I do hope it doesn't happen.

I thought Flats was medically retired, with concussion being the kind of thing that doesn't get better with rest.

Cockbain might be a outside possibility, but he's over 35 at least.

Are there even spots in the squad open in any case? Does it depend on what Van does?

Wasn't sure how the whole head thing worked with Flats. Whether 2 (or so?) years out of the game may have cleared him??

Anyway, as you say, not many spots left I don't think. Depending on how many they end up contracting. By my records they have:

Leroy Houston
Will Chambers
Ben Daley
Greg Holmes
James Horwill
Ben Lucas
Saia Fainga'a
Anthony Fainga'a
Peter Hynes
Blair Connor
Robert Simmons
James Hanson
Rodney Davies
Aiden Toua
Dayna Edwards
Scott Higginbotham
Poutasi Luafutu
Brando Vaalu
Charlie Fetoai
Quade Cooper
Adam Byrnes
Laurie Weeks
Jack Kennedy
Mark McLinden
Morgan Turinui
Ezra Taylor
Daniel Braid

So that's 27. 6 more if we are to contract 33, but there seems a trend away from that. The 6 unsigned could be:

Van Humphreys
Will Genia
Berrick Barnes
Digby Ione
Sean Hardman

With McMeniman up in the air possibly????

I'd suggest, the MMM and Van contracts won't be filled and we will run with 31.

what about richard kingi, or mckibbon? they're two decent halfbacks, suprised the force dont seem to interested in either of em with their lack of notable halfbacks (that im aware of other than sheehan).

could it be John Roe?

not impossible; I actually thought he was about the right build for an 8 post-ELV - big enough, fit, with lineout skill.

depends on whether he likes having a functioning shoulder I suppose

Interestingly the article says which former 'Wallaby star', it doesnt say that the player is a former Reds player at all.....

hmm... Dan Vickerman perhaps?

He signed for Northampton on a 1yr contract, its quite possible he plans to only play the first half of the English season and return back to Aus for the S14 season in a attempt to cement his spot in the Wallabies in the lead up to the RWC.

when he left Australia he said he would consider returning to play again much like Joe Roff...

man, if only i could dream!

I was going to mention the star bit, especially when I saw Heenan's name thrown up.

Vicks back would be good for Australian Rugby but it does say put the scrum cap back on which infers he hasnt been playing at all.

Pure speculation and I would have thought that if it was genuine someone here would have already heard something.

Ok, Kef is 36 next year and Cockbain is 38. I think we could just about rule them out.

Vicks would be the dream of all us Reds fans, but seems unlikely.

Roe is probably the best chance, but not sure where he is up to in his medical career.

maybe, just maybe the reference to 'helmut' was a colloquialism - not intended to be taken literally.

wouldn't you say "lace up the boots" unless you were trying to give a little detail to show off?

From the Courier Mail:

A FEW noses out of joint when the Broncos consistently denied Carroll was making a comeback. But I hear it was all to do with a major promotion and the club didn't want to lessen the impact. Anyway, it's good to have him back adding a bit of fun to the club. Meanwhile we wonder if denials that a former Wallaby star will put the helmet back on to help out with the Reds next year carry as much weight.

Oh God. Its so obvious. Which former Wallaby star has the nickname Helmet??????

Not that we need inside backs..
