hmmm so coaches get paid and players dont? I mean they will do the same work as players right? training twice a week and play on the weekend. Surely it wouldnt be a fulltime salary in amateur club land?

Most of the 1st grade coaches I've known are at very least also reviewing game footage one night a week and having standalone meetings with other coaches to gameplan on other nights, along with full training session plans. On top of that a lot of the coaches are making themselves available all day on gameday even though the 1st grade players usually won't arrive at the grounds until lunchtime.
Todd Dammers was always at GPS games for the 9am kickoffs and happy to lend a hand.

Not to mention the countless times he would jump in as a touch judge at Souths for 4th and 5th grades. As well jumping into halftime huddles and offering his bits of advice when needed. He and many other 1st grade coaches don't have to be at the club for 5th grade kick offs yet they still turn up.

Looking at how Souths were building as a club during that period the club would be disappointed to be in the current position that it’s in.
I know listening to Dammers talk when he was at Souths, he was very much about the success of the entire club. Those days for Souths supporters seem a long way away.
I am nervous for them in all grades against the likes of Easts, Brothers & Wests… could be a bleak year for their lower grade depth.

Tony Mcgahan has come in and did a much better job of recruitment which filters down through the other grades. Last year they picked up zero recruits for prems.

Just looked at what is ahead of Wests in the next two rounds Souths at home and Bothers away so potentially the Bulldogs could be 1&4 - they could be in the same situation as the Penrith Panthers - denying that there is anything wrong.
Respectfully the premiership window does not stay open forever, and maybe there needs to be some humble pie eaten at Sylvan Road and change a few things to suit the current crop of players because if they do go 1&4 it is a very long road to finals footy.

what do you think needs changing? Genuinely interested, personally I think there has been almost no structure in attack from the backline, it has been 2 very wet games, but others have had same conditions and shown more. Also some poor turnovers in possession from forwards mainly but backs at times too have really hurt momentum

A bit of humility and honesty in their analysis of performance. I heard Elwee on a podcast saying that they are winners and they know how to win , etc. well I would say that reputation earned in prior performance does not win you games. This is a different group of players so they don’t have the shared experience of working through tough situations and winning. Work out what’s going wrong in performance and set about fixing it. I thought the failure to get the draw by taking the points against Easts was poor decision making. If they took the points at first offering they would have had plenty of time to get back down there to secure a victory with another penalty. It was said on here that they knew they had two bonus points in the bag v Easts but a draw would have given them 3 and reduced Easts return to 3. That was dumb rugby but mistake made move on and learn from it. By gifting that win to Easts they have given a leg up to an opponent. If 10 wins gets you into the finals then they need to win 9 out of their 13 remaining games - if they are good enough this is not impossible. Their for and against average over the first 3 rounds is 21(for) and 20 against so it is small margins indeed which surely can be turned around with attitude and application. The coaching staff and leadership need to take action and change things up because if you want to look back to past performance as an indicator of future performance then last two grand finals and the 3 games in 2025 would tell you that Elwee coached sides have challenges in winning close games. Championship sides win more close games than they lose.

Just saw that the Wests v Souths match is now on Anzac Day at 3:05pm. I totally respect Anzac Day but why couldn't the game be played on Saturday, so supporters can combine their Anzac Day commitments with supporting their team the next day. For many it will now be another case of watching a Stan replay rather than enjoying the game live at the ground.

You do realise that Wests field adjoins Toowong Memorial Park. It's a huge day for the club (more specifically due to the RSL) starting with a dawn service at 5:45am. Rugby on top will just add to it

wests and souths both feature war memorials in their grounds. Make sense wests vs Souths fixture falls every year on Anzac Day week.
Didn’t we have a QPR Sunday fixture in recent years because of Anzac Day falling on the Sunday?
games kick off from 12 o’clock so you should have plenty of time after dawn service. generally by lunch time most Australians are knocking back a couple of cold beers and playing a couple of games of 2up.
