QLD Premier Rugby 2025

I think all the Oates lads have moved over to Easts - Kye and Chace as well as BJ. BJ was in the Brumbies program so expect he was approached by Ben Mowen.
Im pretty sure Chase has picked up an Academy deal with the Brumbies, would have thought he'd be full time in Canberra

The PAC team last weekend actually played quite well considering it’s a different sport and a lot of the opponents had genuine recently retired NRL players or current semi-professional QCup players.

If anything, the biggest issue for PAC was they brought a 7s team to a 9s comp. They were hoping to run some of the big boys around but if we are being honest some of the big boys in league have decent motors, particularly in a shorter format. So they got dominated down the middle.

Definitely a worthwhile weekend for spectators looking for some local QLD sports during the off-season next year. Had more of a fun Gold Coast vibe than usual rugby league.

9s always feels a bit undifferentiated from the full format of league since it only has 13 to begin with

Can someone explain the Luka/Davis trade to me in QLD Premier Rugby terms?
Pretend Werchon is a generational player that plays 100% of his games for Wests and is a marketing phenom that's going to be the face of Brisbane rugby for the next decade or more.

Imagine if Wests after losing the Grand Final sent Werchon to another club in exchange for a 32 year old chronically injured prop, a broken vending machine, and two left shoes found in the shed.

Yet with one of the biggest junior clubs in Brisbane cant seem to develop their own.
Wests are in an interesting area and I'd dare say most of their catchment already go to a private school and are playing school rugby.

This is decades ago, but I found it hard balancing club + school rugby commitments even being a BBC kid who played for Wests.

In all honesty, if I had a son, I don't know if I'd want him doing club + school rugby. I'd be wanting him to partake in a wide range of other sports so he didn't get burnt out like we see with so many "generational" school boy talents.

It seems to be a larger problem where players are fed into the system earlier, which can be detrimental for:
A) The kid on the pathway, if they fall off it
B) The kid who doesn't make the pathway, and may never return
C) The people around them who are required to invest a significant amount of time/money into them for potentially nothing
D) The system as a whole which is losing numbers because kids leave the game due to factors like the above and others.

It happens a bit in rugby league, and a mate of mine in NZ said it is happening there as well, particularly where big schools are hoovering up talent, leaving the smaller outfits with no rugby option. It hurts the big school longer term as they end up with no opposition.

Not so much high school age but when my boys were younger it was important to engage with a number of different sports.

I kept going back to rugby because of strong ties to my club from a social perspective (and locality also helped) but honestly some of the local junior programs in soccer, AFL and League were just run better and were more affordable.

It does feel as though rugby leans on community goodwill to a larger degree than other sporting endeavors.

I guess there are still enough of us around that grew up in the true amateur era. Where clubs and provinces survived / flourished by the community contributions of sweat equity , effort and generosity.

I wonder what it will look like in another 20 years?

this is still how it is dude

lot of these clubs are run on the back of the fumes of a oily rag. Without volunteers putting in their hard earn time and converting their blood, sweat and tears into club/community success

Queensland Premier Rugby is still an amateur comp, in every sense of the word.. The 40,000ft view of the competition from todays perspective is largely the same as it was 30 years ago.

I'd say beyond the obvious changes to the way the game is played (laws, tactics, etc) and the high-performance aspect (rugby players are something like 20% bigger now than 50 years ago - wallabies dietician posted this on her story the other day) - everything else would be largely the same - including players shifting clubs and being paid.

Plus we don't have pokies. Even second-tier rugby league clubs can fund a helluva lot via pokies.

Drive around Western Sydney and suddenly you'll come across a very nice footy oval with seating and a big club next to it.

It isn't all pokies money tho: they invest in real estate and other endeavours that rugby just never has.

Yeh it is an interesting topic Pfitzy because I've been around quite a few league clubs, both NRL level and QCup over the past few years due to work sponsorships and other events and honestly all the people who work at them are lovely and all the players I've met and interacted with have been genuinely good people who are just as passionate about their club colours as we are about ours. Having nice facilities also helps.

But then when you take a look at their fans and the clientele coming to the clubs, it becomes obvious why league in general gets a pretty bad wrap in terms of the type of people they attract.

I doubt even the most private school and rich boy club would maintain it's 'charm' if they switched the pokie lights on.

You've got that right. But it isn't the only way.

Surely rugby - being the whitest of white collars, traditionally ;) - has a bunch of hedge fund managers who could set up billions in investments? Nab 7% off that and the game should never run out of money.
