Might as well get this started with this news:

Wests Bulldogs Rugby appoint Elwee Prinsloo as Premier Grade Head Coach

Wests Bulldogs Rugby is delighted to announce the appointment of Elwee Prinsloo as Premier Grade Head Coach for 2022 season.

Elwee has been an integral part of the coaching staff this year, and steps up from Assistant Coach of Premier Grade in 2021. He has also held senior coaching roles at St Joseph’s College Nudgee, GPS and the Western Force.

The review panel supported by the rugby committee are very excited to see Elwee leading our coaching staff in 2022 and beyond. “Elwee has a unique combination of technical knowledge, strong communication skills, and inspirational leadership.” Joining Elwee will be Cassidy Holland and Daryl McNamara as assistant coaches.

We would especially like to thank Carl Marshall and his family for their tremendous contribution to the club over the past 2 years. Carl has made huge progress with the team, and we look forward to building on the strong base in the 2022 season.

Wests are my pick to go all of the way this year. They lacked the fitness to close the deal and had GPS on the ropes in the semi this year but a lack of fitness cost them. I expect them to take the next step this year although losing Skelton will be big.

I just don't see Uni dropping off much, I think they will definitely be the team to beat again and would back them to win it all.

They've lost their number 8, possbily Sam Wallis and likely Steve Moore, but the rest of the squad will probably be floating around I think? If Kalani Thomas gets constant Reds time and comes long like everyone thinks he will, his game will evolve further and be elite at club level.

I am excited for GPS though, I think they've got plenty of good young talent come through the Colts system. As long as 80% of the Prem's team stick around (I know they're losing a few like Kuridrani) they should be competing at the same level again.

I can't see it happening. Carter Gordon, Moses Sorovi and Isaac Henry kept them in a lot of games. I highly doubt they will see any of Gordon or Sorovi and much of Henry at all next year. Unless they have recruited a flyhalf, I can't see it unfortunately.

One thing is for sure, Elwee does have rugby connections, so happy to eat my words come end of next season

Agree - what about Cullin Cooper-Jones? His Prem Grade minutes picked up during the back end of the season and I thought the tempo lifted when he came on. But I guess that's the point bringing on those young halfbacks during the back end of the game, speed things up and create uncertainty.

CCJ very good. So good he's on the move south I hear...

I've heard it's just a pre-season training situation - similar to what Matt Gicquel did with them a few years ago. Rebels already have Tuttle, Powell and Sorovi!!

Just off the Colts 1 and 1st Grade Grand Finals alone, I wouldn't be surprised if CCJ and Bas Ward are the GPS 1st Grade halves in 2022...

I am going to be shot to pieces with my comments. I’m prepared.
Firstly, I think we have got Picone wrong; most of us call him Piccone, well I did.
The last couple of years Picone has been a thorn in the Red’s ass because Red’s management didn’t get what they wanted, which was the signing of players on a 4 year budget deal. I know first hand of two players who are spewing at what they signed for in comparison to younger Picone players on double and more the amount. I know it’s not all about the money, but by Christ you just don’t know when your days are done and what you’ve got the show for it in the end. Interesting enough those two players are weighing up their agent options and have obviously considered they won’t be welcome in their home state. I have spoken to a few players and families of many Picone players over the years and all of them (not even one exception) speak of him like a Holy Almighty. No joke.
In the best interest of Queensland rugby’s winning streak there needs to be a peace play between Picone and Cordingley. The other states are rubbing their hands together with this conflict. The ratio of keeping the best of the best will be outweighed with retaining the second or third choice. The Red’s had only 3 players (2 starters) in the Wallabies’ 23 for three weeks running and how many of the other players did we develop in Qld?

I’m not sure character references from the players/families of the players is overly relevant for the issues that many have with NewStar and Picone.

the issue has never been whether he was a nice guy or treated his players well. It has been his interactions with both rugby clubs and rugby organisations.

Isn’t that who he represents as an agent?
There seems to be no shortage of clubs that want his players. Including the Wallabies. My opinion of Picone is neutral as I don’t have direct dealings with him. All I’m saying is that the Reds seem to be losing the battle, and the players still get to play rugby but with a bigger pay cheque.

Carl Marshall is back at Brothers as Assistant Coach. Interesting to see!
I have heard a few things about him, 1. that he was always taking time off coaching at the end of this year to study and spend time with family, and 2. that he found out he wasn't coaching Wests through the Social Media post announcing Elwee Prinsloo as a coach... Chinese whispers is good fun hey!
