Not that I am complaining but how does Suru Uru end up at Wests? Easts can’t be happy losing George Francis to Wests last year and now Seru. I know it’s dead and I’m old fashioned but I do like old fashioned club loyalty.
For a Wests supporter you are very pro East’s bulldog… Easts do their own poaching so what goes around comes around… Rhys Van Nek, Alex Smit etc.. all clubs suffer from one time to the next. The modern day player aren’t shackled to the notion of one club.

he lives with one of the Wests fijians I believe. Ironically I believe it is Droaese who has apparently heading back to Fiji.

Oh and yes, Ben Mowen has quite the check book at the moment so Easts can't be crying about players moving to other clubs.

If the Rebels to Wests plan does come to fruition, no doubt Wests will be applying for a rule change with the QRU to have any Super Rugby registered players available for finals under the same rule currently governing Reds players.

Had Wests been able to keep all their Rebels last season for finals, I have no doubt they would have beaten GPS and probably given UQ a good run for their money in the final.

And I think that would be fair enough. If a player aligns themselves with a certain club from the outset of the season, and plays Super Rugby, I think they should receive dispensation regardless of what team they play for. The rules are obviously the rules for a reason, but I'm still holding onto the season probably 6 years ago now where Hergarty and Sean McMahon weren't able to play for GPS in the finals despite having been registered with the club for the season.

Why no doubt? I think you're stretching things a bit. They've got to simply focus on ensuring their Reds players are registered, which I believe cost them Paisami last year. If Mason Gordon, Zac Hough and whichever Vaihu plays the requisite number of club games, then why shouldn't they be able to play finals?

Did I ever say they shouldn’t be playing finals if they play the correct number of games? That wasn’t my point.

I’m talking about the players who are likely to not make that requisite game cutoff - my understanding is that unless they’re playing for the Reds, they would be ineligible in that case, such as Hosea last year.

It would be silly of Wests not to at least petition the QRU to change their rules to allow players from any Super Rugby franchise to be allowed to circumvent the minimum game rule, provided they were registered with the club from the start of the season. I don’t have an issue with that. As I said, it would have meant Hegarty and McMahon were available for GPS many years ago, and considering they had always been registered with the club, I think it is fair enough.

Per RR point earlier, if the Rebels are looking to send all their players to either QPR or SS to play club rugby, that rule could also assist other QPR teams for finals. Of course they might all end up having to be at Wests anyway.

It's pretty simple , be registered by a certain date and play the minimum number of games ( 6 for a regular season) and you qualify to play finals.
It suits the QRU to parachute Reds' players into QPR finals who don't meet the requirements , both from a development and attracting spectators/ audience point of view.

Having a bunch of Super Rugby players on the field just for finals would no doubt attract some viewership that otherwise might not watch, so there's an argument for it. It would need to be balanced out by the negative effects of denying local players exposure to playing finals and club continuity/loyalty.

Yep makes sense.

Anyway the Rebels stuff has hijacked this thread for long enough. Although it seems there isn’t much else to talk about, the first round seems so far away.

With Super Rugby starting this weekend, has there been any news on whether players will be in ‘bubbles’ for the tournament?

There seems to be some push in the Reds threads for Spencer Jeans to get a nod. Which means UQ could certainly run out a strong backline if they end up with Kalani Thomas, Lynagh and Grealy for long period of the season.

If the QRU are going to allow a formal agreement between a QPR club (Wests) and the Rebels which no doubt means players ending up there throughout the season, I think that does more damage to local talent exposure than the whole finals eligibility stuff.

Anyway like said in my other post, time to move on from the Rebels stuff.

Still over 2 months before QPR kicks off, with Super Rugby kicking off this weekend plenty of time for form and injury to take toll on who plays where.

Topical due to the Wests/Rebels chat, UQ plays Wests in the opening round ( ANZAC round Sat 23rd April). Could see plenty of wider squad Reds' and Rebels' players having a run. Will be interested to see who Wallis and Ripley play for if back in QPR.

As PC mentioned , the UQ backline looking strong with the likes of Thomas , Lynagh and Grealy likely getting some extended time together. That's before you throw in Dalgleish, Twidale, Foley, Oates brothers, TJ Siakisini and possibly Ripley. Not sure if the forever young Scotty Gale will lace on the boots again.

Dalgleish, Twidale and Foley would be great mentors for the young guys coming through. Last year Foley, Twidale and Gale were like having on field coaches. Those around them definitely knew their roles and it showed on the scoreboard.

once again, YOU are the only one who has suggested this.

No I haven't? A poster called Sideline Hack mentioned all of this a few pages ago and I have elaborated. For the record I don't know anyone at the Rebels or Wests. I'm simply voicing my opinion on the topic on this internet chat forum.

If you go back to earlier this year YOU even insinuated as much, that Rebels players would be based out of Wests.

Not sure what you're trying to accuse me of here either? Having an opinion and generating discussion? You seem very happy to jump down peoples throats on certain topics.

you're the only one who has said Wests will petition the QRU for a change of competition rules. No one is doubting that there will be Melbourne players at Wests. You've just made a couple of extraordinary leaps from there with no basis to them

PhilClinton

Mark Loane (55)
I don’t think the leaps are that extraordinary.

Each year clubs apply to the QRU for dispensations for players to play in finals for a variety of reasons.

I don’t think it’s that far fetched to think Wests would be proactive in applying for a rule change at the start of the season to allow any Super Rugby players to play finals.

I would support that change. Especially at the moment when we have no NRC competition. We may as well use the QPR platform to have the best available players on the field.

Anyway I wanted to move on from this a while ago, because we honestly don’t know what will happen so no use speculating more until the season at least starts.

No need to change the rules...

"be registered by a certain date and play the minimum number of games ( 6 for a regular season) and you qualify to play finals"

This is fair on the players that get the club to the finals and reduces the he who has the "biggest wallet" to parachute players in wins the comp

Might as well get this started with this news:

Wests Bulldogs Rugby appoint Elwee Prinsloo as Premier Grade Head Coach

Wests Bulldogs Rugby is delighted to announce the appointment of Elwee Prinsloo as Premier Grade Head Coach for 2022 season.

Elwee has been an integral part of the coaching staff this year, and steps up from Assistant Coach of Premier Grade in 2021. He has also held senior coaching roles at St Joseph’s College Nudgee, GPS and the Western Force.

The review panel supported by the rugby committee are very excited to see Elwee leading our coaching staff in 2022 and beyond. “Elwee has a unique combination of technical knowledge, strong communication skills, and inspirational leadership.” Joining Elwee will be Cassidy Holland and Daryl McNamara as assistant coaches.

We would especially like to thank Carl Marshall and his family for their tremendous contribution to the club over the past 2 years. Carl has made huge progress with the team, and we look forward to building on the strong base in the 2022 season.
Interesting times at Sylvan road then

The Rebels filtering all their players through Wests will have an impact on the competition in general, regardless of whether they can all play finals. So your second point is already essentially at play.

If you are correct, I'm not sure how Whiteside, Dobbins and co would feel about playing 2nd Grade intermittently. Greener pastures for them? Norths could do with a bolster. But in all seriousness, it's a fine line between winning titles and hollowing out the club.

Brothers probably a better option with openings at hooker and fullback. Dobbins knows his way around,

Easts have vastly improved their training facilities and brought in a club legend and ex-captain of the Wallabies as coach. This has attracted a number of eager new players. I can assure you none of them will be getting wealthy as a result of Ben Mowen's cheque book.

No one there is weeping over player loss; it happens every season. Doesn't mean anyone particularly LIKES it but it's part of the modern game.

If all clubs can remain healthy this will be a great year for QPR. This competition just continues to improve. Can't wait for Saturday 23 April!
