TT very good point re sunnybank on the ropes after 3 rounds and they still haven't met the premiers or the comps form team souths. A lot of must win games between now and finals

I didn't make the game on the weekend but I hear there was a few unhappy supporters with the teams effort in defence.
Hard to gauge were the team is at until they meet the big 4 (souths, easts, brothers and GPS)
Biggest issue at the moment seems to be losing players to NZ.

I think a lot of clubs are in that boat, but NZ is an attractive proposition. Worked out well for Tom Murday

Who have you lost Red Heavy?

I may have mentioned this over in the NRC threads about the talent pool quota needed for ITM of AUSSIE imports has now dried up & because Shire Shield players will be filling 4 NRC teams that Brisbane Premier rugby now becomes a area ITM franchises will be targeting to round out their rosters.

SX - Aidan Toua was headed to ITM last year before he had a heart to heart with Coach Richards, then unfortunately the injury he sustained in Round 18 put him out of the QPR finals.

There will be no Aidan Touas, Beau Robinsons or Chibbas like in years past playing ITM because they now have a proper 3rd tier to support their development.

With only 2 qld teams featured in Australia's marquee breeding ground of course the NZ will be looking towards our competition to fill out their remaining roster spots in their comp. the ratio of players will be mien ute but still noticable compared to years past

How is the depth at Souths in the crucial positions?

I know if Easts were to lose Brandon they would have trouble filling the #10 jersey if UJ was unavailable, probably have to move Mullins to #10 and bring in Adam Deck @ #9. Deck is a very good scrumhalf and will put pressure on Mullins for his spot but Mullins is looking more like a half back in 2014 after a full season in the position and he is just a good footballer no matter what number he has on his back. That versatility and injury has probably held him back a little going back a few seasons.

I recall Easts in 2011 won the first 8 games then injury toll set in and despite defeating Brothers in the Welsby Cup in Round 17 missed the semis again!! Easts used more than 40 players in Premier Grade that year.

I am not wanting to death ride our south side cousin but it is a long season QPR so don't start counting chickens at Chipsy Wood just yet.

And Red Heavy please don't roll out the "Poor Uni" tale because such is the depth that you have that no matter who you run out in Prems Uni are always hard to beat particularly at St Lucia. And if the Reds don't make the S15 finals you'll get back Owen, Hanson, Harris, Davies, JJ. And you have Gale @ #9 so nothing shabby about a line up that contains some or all of this lot.

And RH you sit top of the table after 3 rounds with a F&A 50 points better than anyone else in the comp, please leave sourcing the underdog tag to those that sit outside the top 4!!

No club would want to come up against a Reds reinforced Uni or Sunnybank in the finals.

Definitely not trying to claim underdog status or poor uni at all.
With the squad we have I would assume we will be near the pointy end come finals time even with out the reds boys coming back. I was just trying to say (with all due respect to the teams we have played so far) it's hard to gauge where you will sit until you have played what I see as the big 4. Souths undefeated start is much more impressive since they have knocked off last years grand-finalists.
As for players leaving for a paid gig it's a great thing for the boys and will never be begrudged at uni. I just wished that the temptation of the revamped ARC would be enough to hold the boys from all clubs for at least the first season. But with only 2 teams in QLD and what you would assume only limited spots for club players you can hardly blame them.

TT, did you go to any Easts finals in the 90s? I heard yesterday that there was one final against Souths, (mid to late 90s?) where Easts won by a conversion! Richard Graham might have been captaining Easts at the stage after coming over from GPS.

Easts beat Souths in 1997. Souths were in GF's in 58,80,86,87,88,89,91,92,93,94,95,96,97,98,2000 & 2009 winning in 58,86,91,92,93,94,95,98 and 2000.

20-19 I think the score was Souths had a number of internationals Richard Graham was man of the match

Filth they played in GF v Souths ('95) lost; v South ('97) won 19-18 or 18-17 Richard Graham was #15 capt was Peter Murdoch, coach Grant Batty; v Wests ('99) won by a point, Tony McGahan (Rebels coach) @ #12; Richard graham # 15 & Capt, coach Adrian Thompson current Aust U20 coach.

GF losses in 1971 when Ian McMillan broke his neck, 1984, both losses to bros and then also in about 2002 to Canberra.

4 premierships in last 20 years 97,99,08,13 equals Souths over same period.

Filth I went back to the 2013 forum for these Grand Final & Premiership stats for each club that I did after the 2013 grand final.

Last 20 years GF appearances ; L20 years P/ships; L10 years P/ships
Souths 7;4;0;
Easts 6;4;2;
Canberra 3;3;0
Snbbnk 5;3;3
Uni 3;2;2
Wests 4;1;1
GC 5;1;1
Bros 4;1;1
GPS 2;1;0
S/Coast 1;0;0
Norths 0;0;0

An historical account of Grand Final results can be found at this link:

http://www.redsrugby.com.au/PremierRugby/History/TheHospitalCup.aspx

Unlike the Shute Shield, Hospital Cup success has been tasted by 8 of the existing 9 QPR clubs in the last 20 years. Unfortunately the only club not to have appeared in a Grand Final over this period is Norths and I don't think anyone would begrudge them success if it came their way soon, and it looks based upon the 2014 results to date that Wests & Bond are heading in the right direction.

Norths (formerly Teachers-Norths) last appeared in a grand final in 1981.

Souths last Hospital Cup win was in 2000.

Sunnybank with 3 premierships over the last decade would arguably be the best performed club over the last 10 years.

Souths and Easts have both won 4 premierships in the last 20 years but this 20 year period dates back to only 1994 and does not include Souths premierships in 91, 92 & 93 (which were in addition to their wins in 94,95,98 & 2000).

It also doesn't include Uni's 3 in a row from 1988-90. Nor Brothers 5 in a row from 1980-84.

It is interesting that the Brothers (80-84) and Souths (91-95) streaks were both 5 in a row.

Would anyone be bold enough to suggest which was the better team if we could get these two eras on the same field?

I may not have aligned the years or positions correctly but wouldn't you love to have seen these one on ones:

Handy/D'Arcy v Crowley
Connoly/McBain v Foley/Cannon
Nightingale/McCall v Morgan
Shaw v Sam Scott-Young
Burke v Perrin/Carroll/Robinson/Connors
Lavin v Tait/Johnstone
McLean v John Mulvihill
Moon/Hanley v Little/Horan

I am sure that Filth & Warhorse can help making the comparison of these two great eras for their respective clubs.

What are the two QLD NRC Squads going to look like?

Purely for discussion purposes I have compiled these lists - they are not intended to be complete or informative lists as I am not aware of every contender at the various clubs and I have tried to leave aside my Easts allegiances for once. Nor am I aware of what basis they will set the eligibility criteria for each side.

You will see once you put all the players from the various Reds squads in the mix that doesn't leave a hell of a lot of vacancies for the club toiler.

You know your history, TT! Good to see.

Might want to throw Cannon over to our side, I think he ran around at Brothers at some stage, I think it was when he was younger, then crossed the boarder to those dreaded Waratahs.

What was the go with Canberra? I can't recall. I remember them being strong, with a young Matt Giteau staring!

Filth - been busy this morning!!

Brendan Cannon was a Souths Junior/Lauries Old Boy and played initially as a No.8 for Souths Colts & Grades before shifting to hooker where his ability to play hooker for Souths was obstructed by the fact that Michael Foley played for the Magpies so he and his brother went over and played for Brothers - I think it was a John Connolly thing.

But if you asked Brendan he'd consider himself more Souths than Filth.

Logging off now to get some work done.
