it's going to be an interesting year for Easts with so many of their players in one rep side or another. Great reflection on the setup and coach Richards but Pat will almost have to pull another rabbit out of the hat like he did in 2008, if too many of his frontline players aren't available.

Don't know if it has been asked earlier but what is the story with Matt Brandon, playing or not?

Brandon's right to go.

As for your first comment agreed - but Reds A commitments finish on 23 March (final Pacific Nations Cup) so we will get those guys with the exception of the U20s. Hopefully from an Easts perspective they won't make the final & be available for the Sydney Uni game - will be ugly without those guys.

The Aust U20s Champs is on 22-26 March so Easts will be without Gunn, Placid, Fatal & Deck (#9) during that time and some of them will go to JRWC in NZ in June.

I am confident that the Tigers will make the 4 and if you start the finals without major injury anything can happen just like 2008 - back to back is a big ask though.

We should get a much better read of the different teams this weekend. The first week of trials is always a bit of a shambles in terms of guys who are great at training getting shown up as players.

I think Uni will be a good test for Sunnybank. They have been in good form over the last few years and it sounds like they might have some more talent coming through the ranks.

The Dragons have some amazing talent but its a case of getting some consistency, something that they missed last year.

For the Tiger Fans - I hear Chris Mansell is running in the state titles this weekend where he hopes to better his PB of 11.1 seconds and then hopefully qualify for the Stawell Gift @ Easter he'll then come back to the Den and play out the season.

It will be great to see Mans back in a tigers jersey.

I think the real dark horse this year will be Brothers. I don't mean to talk my own club up, but I think the season will go either really well or really bad.

I think the favourites for the title this year are Easts, probably followed by GPS.

I think Souths will be a surprise as well.

I think GPS will be very unlucky not to win a premiership (or multiple haha) in the next few years, including 2014. Not trying to be too one eyed but all the 'home grown' players are currently hitting their prime with the likes of Ellis, Zangari, Gorman, Ferguson and McWhirter being around 25-28yrs old. And all signs are pointing to players like Kerevi, Kuridrani and Kite becoming less available due to professional honours in the coming years. They will be wanting to win now.

Agree that Easts and GPS are most likely to be around come finals time. Souths I would think will get there as well but hopefully have either brought in a few more players or had some talent come through the grades. Can't agree with Filth in that Brothers will be dark horses, I think they will struggle a bit for maybe another year while their gun 2013 colts get used to grades rugby. My dark horse is going to be Norths, seems like they've had a massive restructure at the club with staff and players, could take a while to get going but all signs are pointing to good year from the Eagles.

Interesting to see such little early support for Uni & Sunnybank whilst strong for Souths?

What's everyone's thought process about this?

Anyone who doesn't rate Snbk or Uni does so at their own peril. They will be there of there abouts again.

In Uni's case they will see a lot of McDurling, Browning, Gale, JJ which is a nice spine of a team. Is Nick Buchanan hanging around I thought he was going overseas.

Jets what will Snbk look like? Is McIntyre out for a while. Who'll be your #7 & #9? Will Nigel Au Wong play #14 or #4? How did he go on the wing for Reds A yesterday?

TT Nick Buchanan is the cricket player; I'm sure you mean Tim. He had a contract to go o/s, had his final game, had a club night send-off, then his team went belly-up, so he played the next week too. He's still around, played in the A game yesterday.

The Uni "Premier" team that ran out against Sunnybank started with LOTS of colts- I think maybe 6 or 7? I certainly didn't recognise many starting players from last week. The halfback - Moses? I think he's from St Peters? - had a very good game and will definitely be one to watch. Sunnybank led at halftime and the game turned once Uni put their more established players on.

I'm still cautious about taking too much from the games about the relative strengths and weaknesses, because I don't know if Sunnybank played Reserve & Prem grade, or if they mixed their teams up like GPS did last week. Their reserve grade side and their Prem Colts belted Uni's equivalent sides.

And in the all-important canteen form, I nominate Sunnybank for the best hot chips in the comp. Perfectly cooked, crisp, flavoursome without needing extra salt... Well played, Dragons.

I must confess though, to feeling a little disappointed: I love a rugby club BBQ burger and I've had some crackers at Oldmac in the past. While there were steak burgers available at the canteen, it's just not the same as getting my steak & onions from a hot plate as I walk past bun in hand juggling my beer.

Tigers put 50 on the Dogs but the Doggies did cross the stripe 3 times themselves and looked to have some likely prospects at 9, 12 & 15, but their set piece and defence coaches will earn their money in 2014!!!

Easts have a bit of work to do over next two weeks if they want to even be competitive with Sydney Uni, but will be hoping to get Paraka, Ready, Enever back for that game which will help their cause.

As for Wests if they don't get pumped by injury they may be competive in some games but will be luck to win more than 4 games this year. Sorry TD/SX but will eat my humble pie if one of their wins is against Easts.

Nigel Ah Wong what an athlete - ala Radike Samu!!!

Most likely Moses Sorovi, graduated last year from St. Peters. and played in the Australian Schoolboys.

I don't know how good of a benchmark playing Easts is to know where the Bulldogs are at... obviously it's been a long time since we've beaten the Tigers & the 40something to 3 tries scoreline yesterday is something I'vecome to expect. BULLDOGS KRYPTONITE = TIGERS.. I expect a better outlook of the season during next weeks trial when we take on Souths who were similar pecking order to us in 2013.
