In my view, either play the game as it was intended, or forfeit. Uncontested scrums in Premier Rugby is ridiculous isn't it? Watch the teams sort out their shit if the alternative is a forfeit.

Karl ,I agree with that so strongly, I know when I was involved in NZ, if team couldn't produce front row, it was a forfeit and teams would just play a friendly. Mind you can't remember it ever actually happening.

I heard an interesting way to deal with uncontested scrums. If a team goes uncontested from the start, the team not going uncontested gets three "tight heads" per half. This allows a team which plays by the rules to use a field advantage ie. five metre scrum, to stay on the attack, or alternatively use their tight head in defense. Thoughts ?

The uncontested scrum problem is also strongly related to the restrictions at under 19 level. As scrums are essentially depowered, club and school coaches are picking players who are essentially flankers in body shape, as they are more mobile around the field, to prop up a scrum. They are taught the basics and as long as the scrum produces stable ball everyone is happy. However when these players move into grades they are considered to be"too small" and they change postions. A club's depth in props then tends to only be boosted by newcomers or recruits. If there's been a small intake and when injuries strike.....

Meanwhile in Reserve Grade... There is just 6 points between 3rd place and 7th place. Still 8 games to go, but every other grade only has 5 teams with a realistic shot at top 4.

Norths are the big offender sin regards to contestant scrums but the worst part is they have the cattle (size & ability wise) to do it but they refuse. Worst part is that there second grade team is in final contention so what happens when they try to pull the same swifty come semis?

Norths actually contested scrums in every game against GPS on the weekend. They looked pretty handy as well with a good contest at the set piece.

Watching down at Yoku Rd this year the only club who hasn't been able to field contested scrums in every grade so far has been Easts who managed to contest in 4th grade but then failed to contest in both 3rd and 2nd grade which I find quite strange. I would think the policy would be that props play the highest they can in order to have contested scrums in higher grades. I know Easts are a strong club and in the past haven't had this issue but it was a rather odd occurance. I actually recongized one of the 4th grade props as a former premier grade prop from a few years back so I would have thought he could handle playing a few grades higher.

Wow what a diabolical state of affairs with word on the street the Breakers governing body Rugby Gold coast being disbanded or something to that effect. Sully do you have the inside word??? Apparently the QRU are taking over now??? Anyway til they sort out the back room on field results will continue to suffer until someone gets the ship ship shape. Coach Nowlan will enjoy going from hero to zero with current riff raff he has to work with at the minute - bloody shambles!

This is not good! I probably haven't supported the team as I should have lately, too busy with work and now I'm crook. But the thought of the team folding will put rugby on the coast way back. Does anyone have the inside word?

For the first time since I've been playing grades and colts Easts have not been able to field enough props for all the grades in the last 3 weeks. This is more to do with the attrition rate of our props in prem grade. One of the props who has been playing prems the last few weeks played a number of games in 3rd grade until recently. Prems have used 6 props this year, reserve grade have used another 2 ontop of those 6. Which has left us really struggling.

It does seem sometimes that sunnybank and Norths go uncontested whilst their props play in the centres.

Yep looks interesting here EOA, a couple of Clubs have games in hand (I know we have one against Souths), so going to be good second round to season as everyone tries to line up for top 4.

Props are so hard to come by these days once a few get injured it makes things very hard.

ECA do you know why for the games against GPS, Easts chose to contest in 4ths and not the higher grades? They even had props on the bench. Has this been the case in the 3 weeks you are talking about? I would have thought the highest team gets preference for players, especially specialist players.

Come on ECoast Aces.

Tread carefully when you say Sunnybank/norths go uncontested & props are playing out in the centres.

it's a bit narrow minded if the consciencious feeling is fat people are scrummagers. Whilst it's true to form for a majority of people. Sometimes skinny outside backs who have major pace get a family, move into a office job & take there training less seriously. This inacitivy in their previous lifestyle leads them to pack on the pounds & its unfair for a outside back who is now fat to move into the scrum (why not move him into inside centre so he can be a wrecking ball)

For what it's worth.. I think Brothers is stacked with fat flyhalfs (usually with red hair)... They are built like props but not trained to play the position. I certainly wouldnt make the accusations about them not contesting scrums and sticvking their fatties into flyhalf.

premier teams shouldnt have a problem retaining props if they have a good club culture because they are usually the position that plays well into their mid 30's.

If your struggling with Props, then all you need to do is pick up the phone and ask someone to come out of retirement for a week or 2 (until the other guys get healthy) .. Well at least thats what i'd do if i was a coach.

SouthernX your never to old to learn a new skill. Like scrummaging. I dabbled in the dark arts a while back and depending on the individuals learning curve it can take a few nights on the scrum machine to learn and a session training against a live opposition to feel safe and comfortable.

Big dog - Unfortunately I haven't been around the teams the last few weeks due to an injury, So not sure what has been happening with selections.

It could be any number of reasons why 4th grade had props but the other grades didn't. It could be the time of the games meant players could only play certain games, players refusing to play higher grades for fear or laziness or just want to play with their mates (personally i think everyone should be trying to play the highest level possible), could be the coaches thought they weren't up to the level, or that they feared not having reserves and having to play down a player if there was an injury, or it was a tactical reason to have more mobile forwards (if this was the case it doesn't work because the opposition just change their lineup, or dominate with a size advantage).

I think as a club all our teams play better with a proper front row, and this can be reflected in our last 4 weeks of games for every team but prem grade.

looking forward to hte Easts v Breakers game on sat. Bit of competition back to school days. Pettowa and Bermo v Slipper, coxies, Butler (but now on bench for reds). Think Easts will smoke the Gold Coast by plenty. Goldies in "rebuilding" phase which really means they have no stars buty are a bunch of players playing the game they love. Acually love park footy.

Pettowa has a niggle but might come off the bench, the Cox boys are out, Bermingham is injured and not sure if Buttler will start. He might do what Enever did last week and play 30 minutes (apparently you can't play anymore then this if you played a game the day before),

Matt Brandon is a massive loss, and it looks like Shannon Walker picked up an injury aswell. But Easts still should have enough fire power out wide to win this one comfortably.

I'm undecided whether I should go to Sylvann Rd or Chipsy Wood this week, any suggestions?

Come to the Kennel :p

What's up with Matt Brandon? I hope its nothing too serious.

Season fell apart for the tigers last year when Brandon got his shoulder injury at halfway mark. Hopefully its just something week to week.

Also I saw Brothers left no.10 open on the QRU round 11 program.
Maybe the 2 best flyhalfs in the competition dont even get to see a lick of a minute this weekened (Murphy & Brandon)

I've heard that Dallan Murphy is out with a knee injury. I wonder whether the coach would consider his brother at 10?

Hope Matt Brandon only has a niggle as he is crucial to East's fortunes. Perhaps the young bloke UJ will get some time there?

I'm predicting UJ will rip up a disheveled Breakers defence and look better then he really is. (Not that he won't be a good player.)

Also interesting to see Simon Morahan playing flyhalf for uni? thought he was an outside centre?

I thought Brothers had Scott Daruda as a backup flyhalf?

Has he moved on elsewhere?

He went down late in the game against easts, not far from me, so very colourful language so I assumed he was hurting a little. it looked like nothing but something clearly happened. I haven't been able to get a clear indication of what it actually was.
