Breakers V West

A scrappy game this one. I've heard from reports that Wests where cruelled by injury and this would explain the lack of fluidity in their play. I'm not sure why the Breakers looked the same. the set pieces were a mixed bad with the scrums looking really good and the lineouts looking like a dogs breakfast. Having said that the game was played in the right spirit with plenty of enterprising play from both sides. The fact that the game wasn't decided until the final minute lead to a great atmosphere and a bit of tension for both sides supporters. Unfortunately for the Gold coast supporters the West guys managed a try at the buzzer to seal the match. The Burgers were pretty good, the beer was cold the weather was perfect and my possy on the half way line was choice. If only I wasn't surrounded by West supporters.

Sorry I don't have a wrap of the Sunnybank game this week. I was to involved trying to sort out things with my own team. What I can report is that Samo pulled off a massive hit on Sunnybank prop Buc McKay. Also Albert Anae broke his arm just after half time. he is going into surgery today to have some plates and pins put in and is hopeful he will be back in 8 weeks.

I think the prems comp is looking stronger this year than it has for a while. Even the lesser teams like wests are still putting out some decent sides, and the brothers backline at the moment is a thing of beauty with daruda, muphy's, rapana and the new winger. Imagine if they had felsman and shipperly in there.

Just out of interest are any of the U20 squad still playing club rugby or have they gone into camp?

I think they go into camp on Friday so none playing for their teams for a while.

I hope easts make the bank pay for crushing there finals hope in the last round of last season. But without Toby White at 13 it will be infinitely tougher.

From the qru team lists it appears they will try and burn them with speed. Dagg and mansell on the wings and Jonnny "Van" Wilder at 13.

Speed kills. Let's hope Rex is left growping thin air, "like a blind man in a brothel."

Bummed Sean Cox isn't fit yet, he was a chance to play this week and would of been ideal at 13. Hopefully Johnny Wilder can be strong defensively against the experienced Tapuai.

Losing Paraka and still no Josh Parry is a big blow aswell.

I think the East v Sunnybank game will be won up front this weekend. I'm keen to see how Bermingham and Stolberg go for the Tigers. Both would have had plans to be away with the other 20's boys.

Speaking of the 20's it was great to see Matt Lucas and Malie Ngauamo at Sunnybank training last night before they fly out to Sydney today for their camp. Really good club guys.

With Parry gone we will atleast have 15 guys on the field for the full game.
But probably 3 or 4 less fights.

Fuck he is entertaining to watch sometimes :p

They are showing good faith in Sam Cox to keep him in the side ahead of UJ. From what I heard, UJ had another shocker on the weekend. I still wonder how he got a contract, when he clearly isn't good enough to be starting Premier Rugby.

UJ will be a very good player. Probably take 2 years before he dominates Club rugby, then another 2 years before he dominates Super Rugby. (similar to Ben Tapuai). He is lucky enough to be given the chance to develop at such a high level, rather then slug it out on the back fields of Colts.

He was also played in a very unfamiliar position of 13 after Toby White got injured against the Stingrays. And if anyone has tried playing 13 in Prem grade it is an extremely hard position to defend in.

Sam Cox is a very capable player, but lacking extreme pace or size/strength will limit him to playing Prem Grade and Reserve grade.

Look like another great round of Club Rugby this weekend In Prems. I think GPS VS Uni will be a cracker and also The Bank and the Tigers will be another cracker.

Few changes in key pos this week as well.

Thoughts??

Halley Appleby memorial day/trophy tomorrow for the GPS vs Uni. Will be an emotional one for many players (and spectators) involved.

I'll be at Yoku Rd to check it out.

Good to see a couple of young guys in Sam Mellor and Sean O'Connor getting their run on starts for the Dragon's. A couple of guys who have come through club rugby and earn their place in the team.

Yes, Uni v GPS playing for the Halley Appleby trophy. It will be emotional, but playing a trial at GPS will have (hopefully) laid a few demons to rest. No one wants to leave the field and tell his parents we didn't win his trophy.

Both teams are undefeated, with Uni just one bonus point ahead. Regardless, I'm happy to take the underdog status here:

Great result for GPS who are the competition favorites with daylight second.

The Premier Grade team GPS have been fielding is virtually identical to that which competed last year, plus a few new backrowers. I think when such bold predictions were made that GPS would dominate the competition this year it was based on the new recruits in the backline. However, due to a combination of injury and representative commitments none of those players are yet to take the field for a competition game.

Its a credit to the guys who are playing that they've taken their form from last year and built upon it. No doubt there will be some selection headaches (the good kind) when the full squad returns.

Interesting you say that. He has been out of the his depth at times but you can see what excites the coaches. He definitely has talent.

Following the Timmsy initiative and went down and had a look at Wests v Sunny Coast at Wests. A few observations;
-Lineout time for Wests was terrible, even off their own throw. Ball not in straight, throwing to opposition jumpers etc.
-In the second half, Wests scrum became dominant smashing the opposition.
-Wests place kicker was ordinary.
Given the above, it was a pretty close game. Sunny Coast having more possession, field position and more frequently on the attack in the first stanza. Possession was more even in the second half and a Wests replacement scored the winning meat pie for the bulldogs. The score could have blown out if the 'dogs kicker was on target.
Entertaining game all in all with a few good big hits, enough to get me back for a look at another game.
