Yes B and W from 2018 Qld will be 18 .at least by June 30.
Are you a former Qlder? Been away a while..20 years ago the better TAS schools split away to form AIC and TAS are now all co Ed and rugby not a big deal.no scholarships allowed at AIC and raided by GPS but interestingly .even though soccer is played in the same term as rugby.numbers have held ok..ASH and SLC played last week and had opens down to 5ths and had at least 4 teams in each year.ASh and SLC fielded 7 year 7 teams...GPS have no soccer at the sameness time so disappointed that some of the years are not fielding many teams...someone told me Ippy Grammar had only 1 open team is that true?
We in the land of AIC worry that little Jonny gets turned off rugby knowing that he might nearly get to the top of the mountain and find you know who atanding at the top in his 1xv jersey.another thread I know but this is relevant...will next years comp in all competitions be a bit b low standard because of the half year intake currently in year 11 ??
You would think the majority of next year’s players would be in year 11 this year?

Kids born in the first half of 2001 are in year 12 this year with very few born 2000. Next year will have a mixture of ‘01 and ‘02 born , that means half of the year group will turn 18 . Guess that makes this year the “below standard “ one ?

What are your thoughts on the AIC comp so far this year ? Are they below standard?

You will also find in the land of GPS that an U16 comp is still running , when you add the number of open teams ( often down to 5ths/6ths depending what school ) and the number of U16 teams you will end up with a number greater than five ....

No, a NSW person although I have Holidayed on the Gold Coast and Noosa Heads.and great holidays they were. I believe the enhanced depth your GPS and AIC competitions are likely to experience, has the potential to change your respective competitions.

Joseph Stalin once said why his more numerous but less professional Soviet Army defeated the highly professional German Army that success was due to the circumstances that "Quantity has its own Quality. The same applies in club and school Rugby depth.

Thus large schools whose Rugby programs can generate large numbers of rugby teams in the open division will be at a distinct advantage. Quite simply 1st and 2nd XV coaches will have more players to choose from in selecting their teams. Particularly, in the forwards where an extra year in the open division, will promote expertise born out of experience.Equally, boys will grow and their improved techniques from added strength will be demonstrated, more so in their second year in the open division.

It is not usual for a boy in a Sydney GPS or CAS school to play in a lower grade such as the 4ths,5ths or 6th XVs only to be propelled into the higher grades such as 1sts,2nds and 3rds the next year. Even 7th, 8th,9th and 10 XVs have had players emerge into the higher grades. So I believe QLD Schoolboy Rugby could be in for something of upheaval, if Schools start experiencing an increase with two or more teams added to their open division.

So, Queensland Schoolboy Rugby supporters, I believe you are about to experience some exciting times ahead. With more teams to watch and teams build around greater depth leading to higher quality teams.

Hopefully it doesn't become anything like the confusing mess that is the NSW Schoolboys comp.

Fair point though that having 2 years in opens rugby has got to be beneficial , particularly if you manage to make one of the higher divisions in your first dig at it. It's a big step up at present from 16As to First XV, the more exposure to opens rugby the better.

Well the maths is getting too complex for me but lets agree that even if there is a year where QLD is "half year" down in overall numbers, after that it will be good to at last be sending in (mostly ) 18 year olds instead of 17 year olds to play NSW 18 yr olds and they can all have a beer after the game.(mostly )

1stXV Nudgee College trial Friday 1 June at GPS rugby club at Ashgrove (kick off 7:30pm V GT). Three way games with Terrace and Churchie

Match results. 35min games. Game1 GT 5 d NC 0 Game2 Churchie 14 d NC 12 Game3 Churchie 10 d GT 7 Shock of the night was how bad was Nudgee FirstXV team tonight. Set pieces were dismal. Lineouts and scrums terrible. Unless they improve their defence and scrummaging, it's going to be a very poor year for the Blue White Blue. Weakest Firsts I have seen for the last decade. Big surprise of the night were Churchie. Well coached, enthusiastic and never give up attitude. Good, solid team. They will win more games than people expect. Terrace are the same strength as last season. No one will come close to beating TSS. I predict undefeated 2018 premiership with some record scores.

I agree about the advantage of an older team but quite often a strong U16 age group plays a big role in the 1st 15's success.

Last year at BBC, the 1st XV finished a strong second, the 16A's finished equal 3rd and the 15A's went undefeated. The 14A's were second and the 13A's were undefeated. Most of their B teams finished mid table or higher and the school has been right up there or higher than NC and TSS with representative players numbers.

Like it or not, I think the old story about lack of depth and rugby culture at the college perhaps needs to be revised and updated.

Tough call there Taipan - there was only one try in it with Nudgee v GT & the Church , I wouldn’t be writing off NC before they Tee off, they will all be better come Term 3. GT looked stable & yes Churchie looked sharp. It was freezing there last night. GPS Rugby club know how to turn on a night for Rugby Trials. Great evening all the same.

Agree with you there Ali B on all counts.

NC are experts at not showing their full hand until the comp kicks off, both NC & GT cleared the benches in their second halves, but still credit to Churchie who I think scrap very well indeed and will trouble a lot of teams this year .

It was freezing at Yoku Rd, no ice baths required ! Well done to the GPS club for hosting .

I hear TGS beat BBC 4 tries to 2 today. The comp this year might end up been tighter then everyone thinks with a few upsets thrown in for good measure.

They did, however I also hear BBC beat Ipswich, and Ipswich beat TGS. Rock / Paper /Scissors, should be an exciting year.

Was up at Wests on Saturday with Bond Uni Colts-and the BBC team that beat IGs 4 tries to 1 and especially the team that lost to TGS -looked nothing like the team that beat Otago Schools.
From what I could see ,10,15,13 and 8 were not playing.
BBC better hope that 10 & 15 from Otago match stay fit -as look clueless when they not playing.
I agree that TSS will need a mountain of injuries -including to 10,3 & 8 to lose it this year.

IGS beat them last year and nobody saw that coming, got to remember they are schoolboys and things don't always go to script.

They do deserve to be favourites by a fair margin and will start each game as such , but that does create it's own pressure.

Guess we will see.....

Tom van der schyff is TSS 5 ; he was in firsts last year . No 4 I think is one of the Blyth brothers. Tom is the only boy of(I think South African decent. The team is mostly last years firsts (7) and the rest from last years 16A and seconds. Not sure of number 14's origins. Looks like a handy outfit and the trials are reflecting this.
