2017 QUEENSLAND SCHOOLBOYS TEAMS ANNOUNCED
The 2017 Queensland Schoolboys sides have been selected following the culmination of the Queensland Rugby Football Schools Union trials at Ballymore.
Selected players are to assemble at Ballymore in the McLean Stand on Sunday 25th June at 8:45am for medicals and administration.
Training Times are as follows:
• Monday 26th June (10am-1:30pm)- Core, Unit and Individual skills
• Tuesday 27th June (10am-1:30pm) - Core, Unit and Individual skills
• Thursday 29th June (10am-1:30pm)
• Friday 30th June (10:30am-1:30pm)
• Saturday 1st July (10am-11:30am) Sunnybank Rugby Club. Followed by Jersey Presentation.
All training is at Ballymore except Saturday 1st July which is to be held at Sunnybank Rugby Club.
The National Schoolboys Championships will take place at St. Ignatius College Riverview in Sydney from Monday 3 July, to Saturday 8 July.

36 GPS students selected only 10 missed out??

You need to ask The King and GO, the Qld selector their reasoning why a team undefeated get so few in, they know all...
My guess ,GPS are the best full stop.

They didnt play them,i think the the GPS 1 team would have done to CSS what they did to the other teams
CSS did beat the GPS 2 team
Who managed twice the rep positions
The GPS 2 team also struggled to beat the chairmans team
It was pretty clear the gap between GPS 1 and the other GPS teams

IMO Qld 1 are quite a lot sfronger up front ahead of QLD 2. My concern being NSW are both strong from what I've heard. If QLD 1 lose then we are in big trouble. QLD have 1 week to prepare. Is that enough time to get the structure, the combination, the team bonding in place? We are already chasing our tails. You can get the best players but you can't beat a great team! Planning is way to late but hey that's only my opinion. Good luck boys!

This is the conundrum of schoolboys rugby.The Qld gps season has changed from term 2 to term3 (another days discussion). The nationals is also scheduled around school holidays so it doesnt affect their studies.
However the point is :

- Its obvious Qld schools are not getting the same results since this term change from 2 to 3. Match fitness is below other States who already played their school rugby season and are physically ready.
- Our systems and processes depend much on coaches and managers who volunteer their time to work with the boys.
- Ideally, it would have been great to have 2 wks to work on all those bondings and built team comeradarie, BUT stakeholders(school boards,P&T's and others) do dictate what happens. . .and they dont always have the passion for rugby outcomes that the fans and supporters desire

Well certainly GPS 1 were - by a country mile.
CSS were great - and I mean that . I reckon they should have got at least 2 more in - their No 3 especially , Josiah Tafinnau , ( he really was terrific v GPS 2 ) and their No 5.
Both those spots would have been at their expense of GPS 2 players for mine
With 8 players in of their starting 15 that's a pretty fair and realistic result
Either one of their 8 or their 6 could have been selected over AIC's Brayden Law for mine ....but Law in that last game on Friday needed to step it up . He sort of got there with some early endeavour although ball security was a bit of an issue . It was an issue for all the AIC boys in that game though and really was a nod to their take no prisoners approach of the CSS Boys for the whole 3 days .
AIC's Tiko Twist can consider himself desperately unlucky but I only really would have had him replacing one of the other AIC boys on the bench in QLD 2 which wouldn't have changed anything up in terms of numbers from where
So I reckon AIC's representation of numbers is about right and CSS's should have maybe bagged 2 or 3 more spots
It is fair to note there are 2 or 3 GPS boys ( Gregory Terrace boys ) that are probably scratching their heads as well who didn't make it
In the overall scheme of things the Selectors got it 99% right
Again , the two biggest omissions for me were : CSS's 3 , Josiah Tafinnau and AIC's Winger , Tiko Twist

FWIW....CSS were the most enjoyable team to watch over the 3 days
It's a bloody good sign and wake up call (all in one) that Talent ID types cannot afford to ignore the Downs , Central QLD , and FNQ

It's symptomatic of an ongoing trend in the concentration of top end talent and then the lack of consistent depth all the way through.
This is true in GPS Rugby across all "A" age groups in the Top 3 teams v the Rest
Then the best AIC team ( MCA ) providing clear daylight over other AIC Teams ( although the 10A SLC is the equal or better of MCA 10A and same same with the Villa and MCA 9A's ) These teams from Opens down to 13/14's probably battle it out for the last 2 or 3 spots (on a comparative basis) against GPS Teams in that age group in these spots
But then the top end of GPS Teams whip the bottom third of the table ( and the top of AIC ) but 50 to 60 points ++
Why ?
More concentration of talent is why .
Talent down the bottom end is there but its thinner than a Champion Ruby rollie and it's not as impactful enough on its own to make a difference

GPS 1 just had too much talent across the park. Getting a couple of games together before next week will give them a leg up.
I thought the GPS 2 players played for themselves. Not everyone, but too many which sabotaged any ability to beat CSS on Thursday night.
AIC were disappointing, there was still a little selfishness and not a lot of team play. The continual rotation of props did the team or the props no favours. But I also thought that both all the players were tired from being at the end of their season and the step up in pace of play particularly on Thursday was too much with all but one or two going "missing" when the pressure was on.

Qld selectors and coaches got it 99% right.King was closer with his picks before the trial than after the trials !Reality that in QLD 1 everyone had selected the whole forward pack except for 7 (when Xavier T got injured-Small moved to 6).
Kibble played his way in -so the forward pack was as selected by 99% of us prior to the trials.
Same with the 10 even though Whiteside probably did more in the trials.
Qld 1 look good-Qld 2 could be in trouble me thinks.

Very good Breakdown Shark
From my perspective the GPS 1 team were clearly ahead of the rest size speed and skill. The GPS selectors clearly got that part correct their tight five gave the backs fast and quick ball. I thought that the teams who played them were beaten before kickoff mentally but in reality they were not challenged.
CSS were the next best team they had some good players and a sense from the sidelines of team cohesion and that they were playing for each other.
AIC for mine the most disappointing they looked like a team who actually did not like each other. There sense of team and patterns was woeful. Perhaps a result of just finishing a hard fought season and having played against each other for 5 years. Some of the players who were selected can consider themselves very fortunate as they were IMO poor during the trials.
GPS 2 and 3 were big drop from the GPS 1 team and looked like they were in the middle of the pack. Many players picked from both of these teams were picked on previous reputation.
The Chairmans played their first game like they met in the car park ten minutes before kickoff and played accordingly. However by the end of the tournament playing GPS 3 they looked quite good and the score did not reflect the game.
As for some of the commentators who are complaining that the teams are pre-picked before the trials. I say to you have you not been paying attention for the last five years. That is the way it has always been school and club allegiances always win out.
My only gripe is that I note that training is at Ballymore and then for some reason they go to Sunnybank for a training session. I am sure Sunnybank are just doing this for altruistic reasons and not for recruiting. Obviously the three fields at Ballymore are being used that day. LOL

I am fairly certain that Sunnybank put some sponsorship dollars into the trials last week. There are some real costs involved. And the quid pro quo would be the final training session and jersey presentations at the club.
