Churchie v Nudgee trial
My take. Nudgee controlled the match and were not overly "stressed" (except for the 3-4 minor injuries). Both teams (I think) treated this as more than a trial, it was more an opportunity to gain a physiological advantage for the season! Churchie dominated the scrum throughout the match, possibly due to the unsettled 1, 2, 4, 5 Nudgee combinations. Nudgee were almost always on the back foot in this set piece.
Line-outs suffering from inaccurate throwing/missed timing of the jumps, particularly Nudgee in the first half (the trail terrors). More even in the second half possibly Nudgee ahead in this set piece by games end. In general play I think there was more expansive play by Nudgee, with a few very nice tries and hence the result. Whilst there was the usual arm wrestle in the beginning and even though Churchie had good possession you never felt like they were going to threaten the Nudgee line. Nudgee 5t 4c to Churchie 1t-0c -by half-time.
The second half was marred by indiscretions by Nudgee with a penalty count of at least 3-1 against them. This gave Churchie the territory and a possession rate of about 70% for the half and the ability to mount pressure on the Nudgee line. Through their forwards this was duly accepted in a pick and drive "fest" which provided for 3t 2g second half. With the few "crumbs" Nudgee were able to gain for the half they produced 1t - oc, however for mine the game was over in the first half. There were minor injuries for Nudgee (4,5,6 & 7) and several replacements, whilst Churchie didn't appear to have too many "subs" for the game. One yellow card each as well.
Best: Churchie: 8 & 12 Nudgee: 6 & 20 (fullback)
Notables: Churchie: 3,4,7 & 15 Nudgee: 3,7,8,10,13 & 14
Other observations: Churchie will use there very effective pick and drive game again this year and can never be taken lightly as they are well drilled and determined. Nudgee will be hard to beat as their "all-round" game seems to (at this stage) adequately compensate for any other misgivings.
Read all about it:Hello GPS!
The AIC teams have been selected and are ready to rumble with their GPS counterparts, it should be another exciting year! As you all may know by now, the AIC season has just finished with Padua College Kedron winning an outright premiership. Congratulations to them, many years of hard work has been done at Padua and now they are a real strong contender in the AIC winning two premierships in the past 5 years. Not a bad effort at all with the likes of Marist College Ashgrove still consistently competitive.
On another note, I'd like to talk about the effect of the term 3 change of GPS rugby fixtures. Does the GPS benefit from moving their rugby season to term 3 linking up with basketball fixtures? Was this move made by GPS in attempt to attract football players to play rugby in term 3? I know some footballers would have some great footwork and speed. The AIC I believe should follow the same road as GPS have, but has this affected the basketball? Would love to hear on your thoughts about this. Good luck to all GPS schools this season!
