I went 3/4, blindsided by TSS v BBC as I'm sure most of us were.

I first thought "Wow!!" when I heard the BBC result. But then I thought may be no surprise as I thought they looked a little "over cooked" when I saw them in trial game the week before. I think there were some comments in the last week that some players did not look fit. My feeling was they looked tired and I was wondering if they were just at the top of their workload coming into the season. But now I wonder if it has just been "too much" of everything - strength and conditioning, training and games both union and league. I thought a similar thing occurred with their rowing crew earlier in the year. They were a cracking crew but seemed to go "backwards" as they got closer to the Head of the River.

The Gt v BGS game yesterday was the one I caught yesterday. I thought the BGS forwards held their own but it could have been a very different game if BGS did not kick the ball away so often.

I think GT would have won in any event, their backs were superb but it would have been harder if they weren't gifted so much ball.

There were a couple of different stories on Roycroft's non appearance in Firsts that I heard from different sources.

Feel sorry for the young man being caught up in politics that were none of his doing.

Sounds like the solicitors will be busier than a one armed brickie this coming week.

I also thought the new facilities at Tennyson make it one of the best spectating and playing grounds of any school around.

Extremely spoiled by the big screen and multiple camera shots being used. Was hanging out for the replays of the tries scored as the kicks were being taken but I was getting ahead of myself and had to remember it was just schoolboy rugby. However, they did oblige by playing replays on the screen after the match. Just incredible.

Spectators closer and above the fields than most school grounds in SEQ except for maybe TSS. And no doubt we are getting closer to night or twilight matches.

Jack07 - I don't think it is about motivation. These young men are extremely "motivated" on many levels. But if their bodies have been put in a position where they can't respond like they are used to, then they cannot do much about it. I believe they need to freshen up first and the rest will take care of itself.

Very disappointing "returns" on the investment in rugby by BBC at all age levels yesterday. A lot of scratching of heads around Miskin St this week.

On the other hand the feedback from BGS parents was the results reaped (one win in Secondary School games) reflected the programme.

Traves didn't make a GPS team, and I'm not sure he even trialled. I'm also fairly sure he wasn't in the First XV squad last year. A very impressive GPS debut

The 12 from BGS was Max Wenck, younger brother of Nigel from BGS' premiership team. He's the third choice 12 in the team after Eddie McCorley, who has now left BGS, and another - Player X.

Player X will be back for Nudgee, and is relishing the chance to touch up Calvin Pritchard in round 2. All I will say is that he's called Snacks - and he's only 15

Jack 07 - I think your spot on re motivation. It's not a lack of talent at BBC but more about the ability to get 100+% out of your players.

Both Traves (14) and Fison (11) had brilliant games. Fison is sure to be someone to look out for in 2015. I'm assuming that, with the red hair, the winger Traves is the son of Roger, who was a useful rugby player and opened the batting for Queensland in the Sheffield Sheild.

I think it may be a case of BSHS younger ages going the right direction but they will always struggle at the top level with the current coach.

Much can be said about the TSS v BBC game but to sum it up BBC played a shocker.
BBC:
i. no structure in the first half
ii. most forwards didn't clean out effectively (ie driving past the ball) which meant too many needed at the break down.
iii. scrum obviously out-pushed by TSS
iv. terrible at the front of the line-out

TSS played a typical well structured game and reaped the results in the first half.

Second half, BBC returned to a simple forward hit-up pattern and finally put some pressure, resulting in 2 ties each (?).

TSS will be a force this year. BBC will need to play some simple rugby.

yes - I started with 4/4 for round 1. I was closest with the ACGS-IGS score but there were some blow outs in other matches with scores but not the outcomes. I certainly did not see the BBC implosion coming but TSS again signal their danger when playing at home. I have previously raised the idea of BBC running pell -mell into their "program" without a winning rugby culture at the school to support it. I can only think there were a lot of Lexus' and Porsche Cayennes over revved as upset nouveau riche departed Spray Tan Central on Saturday. Let's front up to the elephant in the dressing room - BBC have the cattle, and they don't yet have massive injury tolls and they have the depth and they have the coaching experience so can GSP or Spikhaza or someone tell me what they honestly think it is??? All jokes aside - this was a ridiculous score.
Some random musings on other games.
BGS only had interest in the rugby program during Brian Short's final years as headmaster - he was going to see the 100 -0 mercy call off result during the BSHS 08-09 reign righted on his watch. With the premiership box ticked, the only numbers Grammar are worried about now are OPs and starting graduate salaries. Well done GT, you'll win a few more yet.
Great to see the prayers on the ground at the start of the match at TSS - not. IMHO this is dressing room stuff. Religious zealots please note don't sacrifice a Monday's Expert goat on your cairns just yet - I am not disrespecting the prayer, each to his own, I'm just questioning the timing and forum.
I heard the IGS try in the Churchie match was at the death with lots of the Churchie bench having a run otherwise IGS were not chance of getting over.
TGS hit BSHS hard and put on a couple of tries with a SH man in the bin - well done to them, they will upset a few at home this year especially if the weather is like it was up on the range last Saturday.

What's the challenges with the current coaching set up?

I really not in the inner circles over there but Just looking at results over the last three years of their 1st, 2nds, 16a teams surely if your head coach you have a three year plan in place ... ?? At the end of last year there was a lot if talk around the BSHS role ... Maybe the end of this season will see an NRL style coaching merry go round... BSHS, BBC, possible GT and BGS

Comment regarding BGS having their 'premiership box' ticked is completely wrong. BGS are looking to build off that amazing season in 2012, as the First XV coaching panel has grown in both numbers and experience in 2014. 2012 was simply an outstanding year due to the calibre of players (Greene, Cornelson, Birch). BGS still prides itself on offering every student a broad schooling life, and the First XV is still taken as seriously today as it was in 2012.
