I give up with this tipping lurk. I think the only one I got right this week was TSS.

I was texted by a mate at the Nudgee game. he said ACGS threw to 6 all day and he was waiting for the NC response but it never came - ACGS just threw and won there uncontested all day. seems a pretty dumb move from a good rugby school on a day when the NC coaches surely told them that possession was key.

Barker and his white elephants eh? one wonders what sort of HR due diligence BBC did. Has this just started or was this what churchie types would say the same things happening now at BBC were happening there.

Posters should leave GT alone when it comes to rugby programs. Admittedly they were late arrivals at the scholarship dance but they have consistently made the most of what they had, even when hopelessly outgunned and their junior sides are wonderfully skilled in the basics. I loved the spirit of their 1st XV a few years back- amazing heart in a season of numerous canings against big spenders like BGS ACGS TSS and NC in that era.

Write off NC at your peril. They have a resilient outlook and can bounce back from a loss better than anyone. Churchie have beaten them before and yet NC have had the last laugh when the premiership cup gets handed over.

Gilmour off to the Reds? Management of a big name team of hand picked imported stars - sounds like his current experiences would have him well suited to a pro rugby franchise.

Well done TGS and BSHS - grinding wins out to get some hope into their seasons. Good work boys.

Monday,
don't be too hard on yourself mate. That said I only missed BSHS beating BBC this week. So 2 misses for the season.
I heard a similar thing re: Nudgee not adapting to what Churchie were doing upfront, but credit to the Churchie team. They are living up to the hype more impressively than Grant Denyer's first episode of Family Feud on Channel 10 the other week.
I also think that GT play with a lot of passion, whilst other teams can be massively inconsistent. BBC are like a night out with Russell Brand; Up, down and sideways and that's just the first half.
My mail there says Barker is out, so maybe those boys might start playing for themselves with some belief. The talent is there and they have been a Churchie banana skin before.
Ippy would have been spraying themselves with Mother at the end of their win over Terrace and may just grow an extra leg (yes I said leg), for the rest of the season. I tip those lads to win at least 3 of their last 4. Go The Switch!
TSS V Nudgee will be a cracker. The TSS lads will be fresher than a Tatt on Cavill Avenue on a Sunday Morning.
Grammar should get home in a close one against the BYE.
More later in the week....

BBC won 13A By 24-17 . Their slick backs v monsterous BSHS forwards. Brilliant game of rugby.anyone who know QRU contacts they need to get onto 7 , 12 & 13 of BBC and8 & 12 at BSHS before NRL start sniffing.
BBC won 14A by 24 to 12 .

I heard the hype around these two teams and was very let down by the talk. The BSHS forwards are not monsterous did not dominate or display the ability to build phases to set a platform to attack off but agree #12 a standout as a very balanced ball runner creating something out of nothing. The BBC backs not that slick at all either and saw not much than simple draw and passing with a little bit of pace but not enough to punch through the gaps left by an unorganised defence or take advantage of the overlaps on the wings BBC #2 (i think) was the best ball runner in that team getting BSHS on the backfoot with effective darting stepping runs.

Forwards - Ipy's forwards were nearly twice the size of GTs forwards. The only forward that stood his ground was leofa with a strong defensive game . The conditions suited a forwards game but GT were just to small.

Backs - looked pretty good considering the conditions. #11 was their best IMO and losing wella early didn't help their cause. The 12 and 13 channel was exposed once again (great attacking line but defensively lacking that dominance).

I though Horan (10) had a pretty good game in the conditions some of his long passes to put boys in the clear were fantastic, put his body on the line in defense a couple of times

So what you're saying is unless a boy has been at a school since grade 8, they don't deserve to be in the First XV?? Regardless of how much work they've put in, including pre-season? At least 4 of those First XV boys have been consistently attending gym and fitness sessions every week since December. And that includes holidays. Being boarders, that means they've had to travel to the school twice a week during holidays for almost a year. And they did it the previous year as well. So effectively they've been committed to the program since 2012. The only time off they've had is when the gym has been closed. You're telling me that isn't commitment to the college? Please. People on here are so quick to rubbish the BBC boys on scholarship, but they clearly don't know a damn thing about the individuals and their families. It is not the players fault they are not a cohesive team. The blame lays fair and squarely at the feet of the coaches.
Yes, there are a number of boys who feel that attending gym and fitness doesn't apply to them, yet consistently are in the team. If you're serious about the team playing for each other, then teach those
boys a lesson by dropping them. There are plenty of boys ready to fill their spots. That's how you teach them to respect the jersey.

I agree with you on the fact that not all scholarship students in the Brisbane Boys' College Rugby program are uncommitted. From an inside perspective it is very difficult to imagine having to travel from places such as the Gold Coast three times a week on their holidays. All credit to those boys.

Over recent years however the college has created an environment where some boys believe they are superstars thus creating very obnoxious and hard to get along with personalities. Rather than a team, some boys believe that they are above the rest of the boys in the program. This can make it hard for coaches such as Barker and Stevenson to coach boys of this nature. Even though these boys are good, they still need to earn the jersey and feel pride in it.

I believe the College has gone overkill with their "importing" campaign. They have created a culture in the school, which boys who are not on a scholarship will unlikely play above 3XV.

I am very disappointed in the school. If you are gonna buy a million dollar team, then you better win more games than you loose, if not, you might as well work with the boys who are coming through the years. At the end of the day, the result will still be the same with the current form of the first XV.

It is only for the 1stXV especially for that eluded Premiership...

...The blonde second rower was great and worked all day but the openside flanker was pretty special. He was fast, made several breaks from the scrum, jackalled well resulting to turn overs, tackled well but what was evident, he was by far the fittest on the paddock he didn't look beefy at all but really effective and hard, probably good enough to play up in any other school.

(Maybe the BBC 2nds flanker could have been a better option to compensate for a slower BBC pack)....They need a leader that they respect and that needs to filter from the top, down to the 1stXV.

The incredible seconds flanker you are talking about is Christian Malaulau, BBC's captain of rugby. He has been at the school since the start of year 8 and truly loves the school (was in contention for school captain this year). He was dropped for the Nudgee game due to him not having the size to play at that level apparently (Tuuga and Farrell being larger). I completely disagree with this and believe that he is one of the best players in the BBC forward pack due to his determination and effort he gives.

Personally I think that BBC's First XV results this year come down to one thing, choosing "rugby stars" over kids with heart. This is the one example that stands out to me. I am strongly of the opinion that a champion team (puts in the effort and dedication) beats a team of champions (all centered around glory).

Just my 5 cents.

Smoking Joe- your match report that you wrote for the 16's was actually the 15 A team! This teams coach I believe should be the next 1st coach at BBC.
The 16A's for BBC won with I hear the most consistent kicker in BBC at the moment and yes he has a league background kicking every conversion and penalties.
And your 15A report was the 14A's!
The 13A's at BBC again had another strong game.

The ability of the 15A coach is top notch and he could well and truly land the top spot next year if it works for him.

You've hit the nail on the head. And you're correct, there are two or three boys who have arrived this year who have rubbed all the boys the wrong way. The fact they feel they don't have to get out of bed like the rest of the boys and go to gym is a bone of contention. But unless they are dropped they will never learn. It shows character and self-motivation to drag yourself out on a cold morning. A quality best learnt young.

It was a little wet out Fursden Rd way on Saturday was it not?
Could this have limited the skill level you were hoping to see?
Certainly against Nudgee the other week they were on song.

I have to agree but disagree

Ippy's forwards were definitely bigger, but I don't think they would have changed the game (wet or dry) and GT were always going to struggle against that forward pack. When the 1, 2 and 3 from Ippy were making 10-15m on each hit-up, GT defence is retreating, the game becomes easy. Apparently TSS had the same problem the week before.

I also overheard one of the Ippy parents mention that 5 of forwards will be there again next year. OMG

Could not agree more. I've played with Christian myself and can tell you he is the most fantastic captain I've ever played under. He knows what to say, when to say it and how to motivate a team. The decision to drop him was absolutely baffling, truly a class player with a big heart.

I think its time to reward commitment and team-players over this superstar bullsh*t. There maybe better players, but not better team members.

One of the best quotes i heard is "you can't pick a player if their ego can't fit between the posts."

Nudgee to bounce back this week and beat TSS by 15 at Ross.
It won't be enough but to stop Churchie sailing through the comp undefeated.
BTW I saw 50 odd people trying to watch the Churchie Livestream last weekend - hope they got a better picture than me.

Geez you're a tough marker RH - pissing down rain, wet underfoot - not really conducive to expansive rugby - more the grind one and two off the ruck that they played. Neither backs saw much ball at all. BSHS and IGS will be one to watch this weekend in the same age group.

Lol. Your information is so wrong . Put the team list up and I'll go through it and tell you were they came from what year they started . Just remember that NC starts in year 5 . Lol. And I am not even part of the school program .. Lol

Sorry Realdeal, I didn’t explain myself properly. For all the front rowers out there.
From the beginning means – “From the beginning of the GPS age groups”. Which in 2013 was......U13’s.
PS. no offence to front rowers intended. especially Geoff you know where I live!

You didn't just toss up the bjru as a measure of talent did you .?? Are you kidding who actually cares about that sub standard pathway . I'm even saying that and my son was part of it. And no he isn't at NC . Lol

Pretty sure all the kids participating do, and if its so substandard, why did you part with the $600.00 for your boy?

Well rugged01 the way I hear it it is not just boys that have arrived this year but boys from last year and day boys.
If you are part of the rugby program then ALL should be committed and not for one reason or other think you are special.
Cause as has already been said no boy is stronger than the entire team.
But that culture has been allowed by Barker!
Other schools and coaches would never have allowed this.

Oldschool

Jim Clark (26)
Yup , of course they are Old School - and they will all still be there next year, and the year after, except probably in the Cs and Ds then because of yet further imports in a vain attempt to build the perfect beast !
As a test, lets see how many of this year's Nudgee 13As run on in the 14As next year - my call is less than half !

I know this is going to read holier than thou and you can berate me if you want.
But, If they are, they are, as long as the boy's are enjoying themselves at school and improving their academic, life and sporting skills so when they step out into the world they are prepared for their life ahead.
