Hey lads, who are the biggest carriers in the comp? I’m talkin’ blokes running like a freight train with a grudge, no brakes, and an orphanage dead ahead—no passengers, just problems.
I would HAVE to put forward big Nissi Vevesi (BGS), this young lad has made a profound impact in his short time in 1st XV footy. Having personally watched him rock the world of an unsuspecting NC boy without a run up, I can confirm he is the real deal. A true no nonsense player, definitely one to keep an eye on.

As always TGPIH

My two bob's on predictions for the weekend...

TSS 24 v BBC 19 - Feel like this one will be tight but have to pick a winner so leaning towards TSS on the assumption rumours about Uys/Galloway etc playing 2nd’s are just that, rumours.

ACGS 7 v NC 21 - Nudgee should be too strong in this one.

TGS 26 v BSHS 12 - As mentioned in an earlier post, this is the most interesting game of the round for me as BSHS have the least exposed trial form and the jury is still out in my mind as to how big a threat TGS will be this year. Can’t wait to see how this one pans out! Thinking TGS (at home) will want to chalk up a dominant win as we head into the back end of the trials period. If they can do that I'll start to believe they can give it a shake.

BGS 7 v GT 12
BGS 7 v IGS 7
GT 12 v IGS 7
Anything could happen here! I still don't think BGS will be a significant threat in the comp, but I stand by previous comments after watching them play against NC / BBC 3-way that they won't get steamrolled in the same fashion they have the past year or two. Time will tell.

Here is a question for all forumers, what would be your most memorable biff in a GPS game could be from any timeline, Keen to hear.
Hey Ricky, for me personally, it would have to be the 1989 4th XV Grammar vs Churchie game. I remember watching from the sideline as the crowd went wild. I have never seen a fight close to that since.
Cheers, BBK

Is it just me, or has the standard of Queensland GPS 1st XV rugby taken a serious dive in the last couple of years?

Across the board, the quality feels down. Even schools like BBC, who were riding high not long ago, seem inconsistent and lack cohesion. Terrace used to play with heart, but now look underpowered and tactically confused. Grammar and Churchie haven't looked threatening for seasons, and even TSS — supposedly the benchmark — have been winning more on athleticism than real structure or flair.

There’s no real competition at the top anymore — most games feel predictable before kickoff. The days of tight contests and real rivalry seem to be fading fast. You still see flashes of talent, but full-team execution is often missing.

What’s the cause? Too much focus on league pathways? Poor coaching depth? Have schools shifted their priorities?

Would love to know if anyone else is seeing this — or which school (if any) is going to step up and bring some real rugby back to GPS.

You're right mate, although I think its a good thing. The traditionally better teams have 'taken a dive' which means other schools have gotten closer to them, meaning the competition is way closer. We've gotten to a point where all predictions can be correct in some way, because it is so hard to guess who's gonna win each week. It will make for a beautiful year of tipping though. This year is the year for the underdog schools.

Mate… while a tiny shred of what you've said has a sliver of truth, 90% of it is absolutely cooked. You clearly haven't been keeping up with GPS footy have ya?

Let's just get this out of the way - and yes, I am an NCOB and have had two sons go through - but Nudgee has been running the show for the past four years and are showing no signs of slowing down. Dominance, cohesion, flair… pick your turn on, we've got it.

And as for games being "predictable"? Cmon mate, these trials have already served up more upsets than a dodgy meat pie. Teams that should be winning are bottling it, and the so called 'underdogs' are turning up with nothing to lose and plenty to prove. If you're calling these results "predictable," I sincerely hope you're not a betting man otherwise you'd be flat broke and outside BSHS at Southbank.

Sure some schools are rebuilding (looking at you TGS) and yeah some teams are relying more on raw athletes than game plans. But that's part of the cycle. One season you're up, the next you're scratching your head wondering how a kid from Downlands just stepped your entire backline.

Blame league, blame coaching, blame TikTok mate idgaf but don't pretend the passion's gone. The rivalries are still red hot, the talent’s bubbling away and come Rnd 1, I guarantee we'll see a few surprises. GPS footy's far from dead... you've just been watching from the wrong sideline S.P.S

Gummutt out.

I've been hearing a lot of chatter recently surrounding the GT team, in particular, their supposed star player George Hales. I was bloody shocked the other day when I heard that this will be George's 3rd season in the 1st, speaking volumes about the quality of their program. I'm not saying that he's a bad player, but for someone to play 3 years in the firsts we are talking about considerable talents sometimes generational players such as Robert Toia and Zach Hough. From all reports, back when Isaac Kefu went to GT, he was asked year after year to play up an age group, to make up for George. I'm not counting Terrace out just yet but struggle to see how they can be talked about in the same conversation with the likes of Nudgee and TSS.
I heard rumors of this as well @Ruck Ranger, although bit harsh to knock George Hales for how good he was in u12's and u13's, definately agree though

Crickey GumMutt 46,
Although I do agree that Nudgee has been running the show for the last couple of years, I couldn't see one of those Nudgee teams coming close to the BBC side from a few years ago with the likes of Jack Howarth, Harry Mclachlan Phillips, Mason Gordan. That's not something against the Nudgee teams as of late, and I'm not doubting the dominance they have had. I just think the quality of talent and flair has been on a decline.

I wouldn't say GPS rugby is dying, it just isn't at the standard it once was. Maybe due to Covid, the competition I feel hasn't been the same since then. But I would argue that the rising opportunities in rugby league are a driving factor in this decline. I think @Scrumpiggyscrum has a very valid point in that quality feels down, but I want to further argue that the passion is fading. The excitement before game day is fading. I still believe the talent is still there, but until the passion, energy, and culture return, the GPS won't reach the heights in once did.

SBS
Appreciate the thoughtful take but I won't stand on ceremony here mate. We've both laid out some solid arguments and I reckon this convo deserves more than keyboard warfare.

Yes, the BBC 'golden generation' was stacked. No one's denying the Howarth, Mason and HMP triple threat had some serious sting. That team played like a rugby highlight reel on fast forward. But let's not go writing off recent Nudgee sides just yet, they've been consistently clinical, ruthless with structure and built different in terms of depth. It's like comparing a flashy Ferrari to a tank - both effective but one just runs over you a bit slower.

Now as for this "passion is fading" idea... respectfully, I call absolute codswallop. Have you seen the student sections lately? It's less "fading passion" and more 'borderline state of origin energy with fewer teeth'. BUT I don't want to hijack the forum with a thesis length debate. Let's save this for Round 9 at Ross Oval for Nudgee vs Terrace, where we'll settle it with a classic sideline yarn. I'm pencilling in a little IRL forum meet up. We'll talk all things GPS, compare war stories, maybe even rate the halftime oranges. So let's keep the debate warm but bring the fire in person on September 13th. I'll be the bloke in blue and white with a notepad, a meat pie and a few opinions ready to fly.

Does anyone know why Isaac Kefu is playing ten for BBC in the first place, where has Toby Kennedy gone or has he been dropped to the 2nds for his average performance against Nudgee?

Hey Guys,
I've got a hot take for you guys, Keegan Cook the TGS first XV flanker should have never made queensland in the first place and belongs in the 2nd XV as he lacks team cohesion and refuses to pass the ball.

GH
Garrick Horseman, this is very well said and I could not agree more. You have a great understanding of the game. Hope the wife and kids are well.

Hey Forum, Dessy Here,

Ive heard alot of good things about this Hemi Rakuita, Heards hes quite the fullback, just wondering who is over him in this position at the moment causing him to be placed on the wing, Are his talents wasted here? is he better rounding out the starting side at 15?

Id like to know your thoughts

Cheers D.H
