Hey Gents,
With all this chat about teamlists and players. I'd love to have a look at the best coaches in GPS rugby.
It's pretty Hard to go past the infamous Guy 'the rhino' Clarke of Gregory Terrace.
Any thoughts?
Righto lads, since we’re throwing names in the hat for top GPS coaches, let me dust off the old boots and weigh in because if you know your rugby and you’ve been around the traps long enough, there’s no way you overlook Daniel Ritchie and Hannes Venter at Brisbane Grammar.
These two aren’t just good they’re exactly what BGS needed to crawl out of the shadows and finally start swinging with the big boys again.
Daniel Ritchie now there’s a bloke who bleeds light dark blue. A third-generation Eagle and now Head Coach at Norths Brisbane, he’s no stranger to taking on long rebuilds and making them stick. Ritchie knows how to build from the ground up not just stacking a team with talent but actually developing it. And that’s the key. He brings that same long-term, no-shortcuts mentality to Grammar. It’s not just about winning a premiership this year or next it’s about laying the foundations for a decade of competitiveness. You want culture? Leadership? Standards? Dan brings all three in spades.
Then you've got Hannes Venter, a former South African pro who’s been there and done that at the top level with the Bulls. The man’s played in the cauldron of provincial rugby, and you can see that pedigree in the way he coaches. He doesn’t just teach the game he teaches how to think the game. The tactical awareness, the physicality, the structure he’s brought that edge that Grammar’s been missing for years. And more than that, he commands respect. The boys listen when Hannes talks, and it shows in how they play.
Together, they’re the perfect storm. Ritchie sets the tone, drives the culture, builds the trust. Venter sharpens the execution, lifts the intensity, and brings that South African steel. And make no mistake the results are already starting to show. Grammar’s not just making up the numbers anymore. They’re knocking on doors. And you better believe, if they keep this pairing together, those doors are going to start flying open.
So yeah, “The Rhino” Clarke at Terrace deserves a mention, no doubt. But if you're talking about turning a proud but hurting rugby program into a serious contender, Ritchie and Venter are the blueprint. They’re exactly what BGS needed and long may they stay.
Cheers, D.B
