Schadenfreude

The problem is that both teams are in the same conferense. I had a look overall of all the conferenses and I saw some Aussies are a bit worried about the differenses of quality between them and SA and NZ after round 2. Still early days and mostly derbies, we'll keep this one going. Dont shed a tear if this shite Cheetah team down the Brumbies on the weekend?

Excellent quote that, it was pretty Close, dont you think. The Brumbies look like they won the World Cup when the end whistle goes and the Rebels look like they all lost a close family member to death.

That's a good indication of the rebels mindset isn't it? They believe they can win and are gutted if they lose. I liked Adam Freier's article about that feeling, very impressive sentiment to have in a team.

Plumtree: Aussies need foreign influx
The Australians and SANZAR will disagree, but Sharks coach John Plumtree is adamant that the Aussie just don't have enough talent to sustain five Super Rugby franchises.

Plumtree, who caused a stir last week by accusing a weak Australian conference of bringing down Super Rugby, was speaking after his team had hammered the leading Aussie franchise and defending champion Reds 30-17 in a play-off match at the weekend.

He suggested that the victory backed up his claim the South African and New Zealand sides in the competition are 'way ahead' of the Australians and that they should 'import' more foreigners to make their teams competitive.

"I created a bit of a storm, I didn't mean to upset everyone like that," he Plumtree said.

"I guess the stats and the points do the talking. I really didn't mean any disrespect to the Australians.

"But maybe they have to look at changing their [eligibility] rules to make sure that they are strong in every franchise.

"Australia has all the codes to deal with, and that's not a problem we have in South Africa or in New Zealand. It's not easy for them to generate a lot of players.

"I don't know exactly what the rules are but if you look at a side like the Force, they've been struggling for three or four years now.

"Maybe they need some foreigners to come in - I know it doesn't do Australian rugby any good in terms of their national set-up, but at the end of the day it's not all about international rugby.

"We've got a showpiece, Super Rugby, and it's really important. That's one of the ways, possibly, and there might be some others."

I think he has a reasonable point in latest comments, so do ARU as they letting Force have extra overseas player, BH a bit harsh your comment, I think it in everyones interest to have 3 strong conferences to help make the S15 a better comp.

The issue facing the Force is it geographical location in Australia. Try selling the idea of travelling an additional 2-3 hours travel each week. Considering many players obviously come from NSW/QLD too, it's much easier for them to travel home if they are based in the eastern states, when provided.

They have a lot going for them sure, Rugby WA's facility, Perth itself (I'd contemplate living there, before the holes to the north).

A possible solution? Sure provide a foreign player quota, also, look at what the AFL did with Brisbane & Sydney, provide financial incentive. Therefore increase the salary cap for the Force.

Open up the import regs to allow for more uncapped players. The force could then steal a bunch of future boks! :)

Tahs had a dismal year, and Rebels while still very inconsistent showed they could go toe to toe with the best teams in the game, pushing the bulls hard, beating the crusaders and coming very close to defeating top of the table Stormers at home.

Force lost their coach, Reds had the curse of the tens, and at the end of the day 1 of the three countries were going to fall short.

Storm in a teacup.

This is not really statistically significant, but this year the Lions were last and the Stormers were top of the table.

Last year the Rebels were last and the Reds were top the of the ladder.

This holds true for 2010 and 2009 although that would seem irrelevant as there wasn't a conference system.

I will be interested next year to see if the teams at the top and bottom are both from the same conference again.
