THE Stormers appear to be the Super 15 team that most South Africans love to watch.
newlands+stormers+crowd.jpg

That's according to television viewership figures from the first two weeks of the 2012 tournament.
The Stormers' two matches, against the Sharks and the Hurricanes, had 776330 and 711039 viewers respectively, while 698043 people watched the Cheetahs versus the Bulls.
Repucom, the company that compiles viewership figures of the South Africa, New Zealand and Australia Rugby alliance, supplied the statistics.
Repucom's figures for the first two weeks were based only on South African audiences and didn't take into account viewership figures from Australia and New Zealand.
Despite sections of the media (this writer included), coaches such as John Plumtree from the Sharks and members of the public saying there were too many derby games, the figures demonstrate an appetite for these fixtures. For the first two weeks of the 2012 tournament, games involving two South African sides had an average audience of 641915 in week one and 737187 in week two.
Given that the Hurricanes were the only international side playing against South African teams in the first fortnight, it will take several more weeks of analysis to see a trend emerging in that particular category. What does emerge from the numbers is the low South African audience viewership figures when it comes to watching matches featuring two international teams.
In week one, only 112205 viewers tuned in to watch the best from Australia and New Zealand playing against each other and in week two that number dropped to 92899.
Clearly, South Africans mostly want to watch local derbies, and they're also happy to watch a local side against an international team, as demonstrated by more than 700000 viewers tuning in to watch the Stormers play the Hurricanes.
Last year's tournament reflected South Africa's dominant viewership appetite over the course of the season. The five South African teams occupied the top five places in terms of average viewership. From fifth to first: Lions (406628), Cheetahs (470862), Sharks (495407), Stormers (536055) and Bulls (657527). The Reds, who won the tournament, and the Crusaders, who have lifted the title seven times and played in last year's final, had average TV audiences of 204624 and 268059 respectively.
It's this kind of TV clout that a delegation consisting of Brian van Zyl (Sharks), Kevin de Klerk (Lions), Brand de Villiers (Bulls) and Cheeky Watson (Kings) are going to present to Sanzar to plead for a sixth SA team next year.

The problem is that both teams are in the same conferense. I had a look overall of all the conferenses and I saw some Aussies are a bit worried about the differenses of quality between them and SA and NZ after round 2. Still early days and mostly derbies, we'll keep this one going. Dont shed a tear if this shite Cheetah team down the Brumbies on the weekend?

But once again, clashes outside the conference are irrelevant to the debate about a team getting cheap conference points. Pointing to the bottom 3 Aussies ladder position is irrelevant, all that is relevant is the conference clashes and it appears the Stormers amounted the same amount of points as the Reds have, they even had more points than the Reds last year.

I'm not actually saying the Stormers have it easy, just pointing out how wrong it is to say the top Aus teams get a free ride..

If we get the Kings, I will not hesitate to say the other Saffer teams have a free ride. Same apply to you at the moment having the Rebels. Cant be that difficult to understand honestly.

You keep mentioning how bad the Rebels are yet the Lions and Cheetahs did not manage a victory against the Sharks, Bulls and Stormers last year. Where is the difference? I guess the Lions and Cheetahs competed better than the Rebels so our Aussie teams got a better point difference but that's really clutching at straws. At least our Brumbies got a victory against the best team.

So you think the Rebels are better opponents then the Lions and Cheetahs within a Conferense?

The Rebels beat the Brumbies (4) and Force (3) last year. 2 victories
The Lions beat the Cheetahs (4). 1 victory
The Cheetahs beat the Lions (5). 1 victory

So yes, they were better opponents in their conference on the basis that they had more conference success.

But yet they end up wooden spooners in the overall log. Lions drew with the Sharks, beats the Highlanders at home, beats the Brumbies at home while the Rebels lost at home against the Highlanders 40-18 and lost 32-17 away against the Brumbies.

The Cheetahs beat the Rebels 41-21 at home, beats the Crusaders 33-20 at home, beats the Brumbies 47-36 at home, beats the Waratahs 23-3 away and end up higher on the overall log as three of your teams and yet you think the Rebels are better then them.

There is something terrible wrong with this format.

South AFrican teams are more watched than NZ and Aus teams... by South African viewers.

Jee, this article is up there with the sky being blue, water being wet & taxes being paid.

Amazing statistics, who would have thought
Pretty obvious isnt it, regarding the TV viewing figures it correspondent to the crowd figures. Newlands and Loftus stand out, thats where the geniune rugby supporters lives. ;)

So Reds beat the Rebels by 5 at home. Derbies are not easy here. Sharks pick up a 4 point bp against the Lions... complete myth.

Look like Plums do have a point. SA nr2 beats Aussie nr1, SA nr1 beats NZ nr2, SA nr4 beat the usually wooden spooners at home.

SA 3 NZ & Aus 0!

PB - I think it may be best if this argument is left in the past as you certainly won't make any friends if you keep raising it, regardless of whether it is true or not.

The conference system is flawed in my opinion. However.........

Melbourne and the Force will get stronger over the next decade if it's any consolation

The last time the Lions toured, there was no professional rugby in WA. The next Lions tour will offer 5 matches against professional organisations around Australia. This is testament to the development of the game in this country.

The Force have offered places to youth and the Force have been a feeder club for the Tahs and rebels who both now boast ex Force players who got an opportunity with the franchise..........who would previously had no opportunity with the Tahs, Reds or Brumbies ( and be lost to the game )

Previously Australian rugby lost quality young talent to League or they just dropped out from lack of opportunity. The players are present and the Melbourne and West Australian Unions will get stronger and stronger as their own nurseries are developed.

I'd be happy if the Kings came in (super 16), the conference system was scrapped and we went back to 15 games where each team plays the other once and home and away are alternated every year ( lile super 14 )

have a top 8 for finals..........most teams will be right in it until the finals weeks to keep interest up ( even with a top 4 in super 14 there was usually 5-6 teams that could make the final spot with only a few weeks to go)

Sensational

I'd love to tour RSA as a player or spectator for an entire month ( 3 games)

He has a point? The Force just beat the Tahs Paarl, what planet you been on? I think you're not understanding what Plum was actually talking about.
Tahs are disappointing at the moment, dropping two matches at home and only giving the Reds a free ride at the top.
