Renegades made a short trip over to Oakhill College to take on Oakhill Old Boys.
I should explain for those who don't know, that Oakhill beat us in the Second Grade grand final in 2008, and fairly handsomely too given it was a wet game. Our Seconds haven't beaten them since the club's very first game in Round 1, 2007. The reason behind this is that they routinely stack their seconds because they didn't think they had a chance in First Grade (they were right). Things appear to have changed recently for them, with their results suggesting they are actually putting out their best side in First Grade.
Things weren't looking good at 1.45PM, with only half a second grade team ready to play and 15 minutes to kickoff. Fortunately the ref was running a bit late too so we kicked off around 1405 with a full side and reserves when a bunch of new guys turned up after the first whistle.
Seconds started fairly slowly. I played the whole game at loosehead prop and got busy smashing their THP who was a mouthy fluffybunny and kept lying on the wrong side of our ball (I did shoe him at one point but it didn't stop him lying there next time - fair play to him). Their LHP wasn't doing any better at scrum time (big fat kid with little experience) so they swapped to try and at least protect their own feed. This was proven to be a mistake when I started driving the new THP back over his second row. Its a great feeling when you see the other bloke's feet off the ground and can change into second gear so to speak. It must be said they were pretty soft in the T5 - put it this way: when we threw a couple not straight in the second half, they opted for the lineout, not the scrum.
A couple of stupid offload attempts and a couple of stupid kicks prevented us getting any first half momentum despite having all the territory and possession, and Oakhill picked up two easy tries and a penalty off our mistakes to go 15-5 up at halftime. They play for field position a lot - I got a chance to make one tackle (and stuffed up) but there was no chance of them attempting to run it if they could help matters. There wasn't much to do defensively except jog back after kicks.
In the second half it was all Renegades as we cut out the bullshit and started to play some hard rugby up front. Besides turning over nearly every scrum feed they had, I caused another one by driving a bloke off the ruck, which led to a try. I'm still too bloody unfit to be more than occasionally involved if the ball moves too far from the ruck, but I made a few runs and, besides getting dumped on my back and losing the ball once, made about 20 yards all up I reckon, and shed a couple of tackles on the way. We won 24-15 with the bonus point (won the second half 19-zip). VERY satisfying.
Firsts were a patchwork team again, and it showed as they went behind 8-nil early on. They caught up to 8-all at halftime and went ahead just afterwards with a penalty, then it seesawed a bit as Oakhill's obvious team training went up against our lot's natural skill. They lead changed a couple of times before we finished them off with two quick tries, nabbing the bonus point in the process to take it 30-22.
Hopefully, with next week being a home game, we get a cast of thousands turn up. We're playing Fairvale who will field a big pack of fast Islanders and try to run over us. I'm looking forward to us putting them away with a bit of structured rugby.
