So Palmer is going to the Brumbies.

Weeks is heading to the Rebels. Apparently Kingi and Byrnes are too.

How do we handle them?

Personally I think it is really hypocritical if Ewen drops these guys. He isn't exactly a one team man.

There is nothing wrong with sticking with one side and there is nothing wrong with bouncing around, it's a free market and you do the best with what you have while you have it.

The talent is not that thick on the ground that you can leave out a guy like Weeks just because he is moving on. Palmer only gets bench time if anyone is injured anyway (that's why he's going) and if they decide to ignore him for the rest of the season what do they do if they get an injury (Baxter has a dodgy calf muscle)? Call in Tilse? That would be an impressive display of sour grapes. I suppose you pick them if they are going to be useful and they are the best you have, but you longer do the "development" stuff.

Play them if they deserve it.

The objective is always to win the next game.

Plus, who knows... they might get injured and then you've dodged a bullet.

agreed JB. they've earned it so play them, and the goal is to win anyways.

but if the signing period allows players to sign while still playing for another team, i'm not sure why there is all the surprise. bit precious i think.

not everyone is going to re-sign obviously or even would have been re-signed if they passed on another deal. and are they supposed to wait months to sign a deal out of good faith? they could be injured or lose form and the deal might go off the table.

it is a profession after all.

you are all such reasonable pricks.

I agree. No professional coach (except Wayne Bennet) will drop one of their best players for such a reason. And they shouldn't. Their job depends on it and Weeks will do his job for the rest of the season. In saying that, any chance to give the likes of Holmes, Slipper, Kennedy and Edwards more game time and we should be jumping at it.

Bellamy sent a guy packing last year because he wasn't going to make 1st grade so he wasn't going to waste his time or another players development. I think thats the key. As long as the focus is this year they will keep on picking the best side they can. Once the focus shifts to next year then I can understand why a coach would select a player that will be the next year.

at the same time as a coach you want to ensure that you have experienced players for the proceeding year, so you would be more inclined to bench a player who is leaving so the players who are staying get more game time..

If it were in context a 50/50 decision, then a player staying would definetly get ahead of the player leaving.

slowly ease them out and prepare the next bloke. We have heard about competition for starting spots and reward for those who put the effoet in at the Reds this year. It is time for one of the other blokes to force Weeks out. Also depends on his team mates attitude to his decision. If it is hostile, it would be better for the team if he was dropped.

Don't let one players decision detract from the bigger picture.

On the other hand if one of those 22 signings is a THP, reward him for his loyalty.

I don't really want him playing for the Reds to be honest - we gave him an opportunity, and through that opportunity he has leveraged himself to another club. He is still young, not married - not in any dire financial position.

I would be far more inclined to throw Holmes into TH and Slipper/Kennedy to the bench.

Just for consistency, I have previously stated that Weeks was becoming my favourite player - but I just think this is pretty ordinary.

Whilst personally I agree with the sentiment that if the player has committed elsewhere, why should we put any more effort in to developing them further, ... "off to club rugby you go"

I do not believe that will happen, I see that Link and the QRU will be much more pragmatic in such that whilst ever there is a mathematical possibility of finals football being played, as long as Weeks (and whomever else may sign with the Rebels) is still performing and is good enough to hold on to a starting position, he will coninue to be there.

Let's face it, the QRU needs the cash that a winning team can bring in, and this year especially, nothing will stand in the way of that.

But if and when that race is over, he (and any others) will be cut the very next day.

agree with alot of what has been said.
that said, Wayne Bennet was right to drop hodges, the guy was an up and coming player not making the starting side and bennet traditionally didnt sign players but brought them through development, there was no point giving the kid more game time and pouring more money into his development. (i believe if he made a certain amount of apperances he got an extra contract)

Palmer isnt really factoring he is back up and its fine to play him if need be, but if everyone is fit then he drops out of the 22 and i wouldnt even be considering picking him.

if QLD have someone that can do the same job as weeks or byne then pick them, Kingi isnt realy a factor anyway is he, lucas should be picked before him though, let him go to melbourne early.

The players should just look after themselves, Weekes did what was best for him, good luck to the guy.

Link may not have known, but tough, Link will flick players he doesn't need as is Morgs.

To assume they aren't just a piece of meat to the franchises, to be discarded when no longer needed, is just naive.

So why shouldn't the players treat the franchises in the same manner.

Why wouldnt the rebels sign Morgs? He's only 28 and brings experience and to be honest Morty is playing like he's 64 this year...

It would give me someone to play the dish-lickers with down here too....

Yeh if Morgs wanted to play Super 14 he would stay at the Reds. He has obviously indicated to Ewen that he won't be around next year in Australia and has been dropped accordingly.

based on what? the man clearly wants to see if he can ever wear green and gold again, if he didn't quit/move at 26 I can't see him doing it at 28. he could still come good and as such he should back himself.

1 or 2 more years at least.
