Mooney axed as Reds coach

Queensland Reds coach Phil Mooney has been sacked.
Incoming Queensland Rugby Union chairman Rod McCall has just announced in a media conference that his contract has been terminated immediately.
"Phil's shattered," McCall said. "It's obviously something very close to his heart. He's taken the news pretty hard."
McCall said the QRU board had accepted a recommendation from a consultative group to end his tenure and recruit a new coach.
The decision was made by McCall and former Wallabies Tim Horan, Dan Crowley and Brett Robinson.
Mooney had one season remaining on his contract with the Super 14 franchise. In the moments before the announcement at Ballymore today the usually affable coach walked ashen-faced out of a meeting with QRU officials.
Rumours of Mooney's future have circulated for the past day. The former Wallabies fullback and Fox Sports commentator Greg Martin, a friend of Mooney, said on Thursday night's Rugby Club program there was talk he'd been sacked with one season of his three-year deal remaining.
The rumour has turned out to be on the mark.
Mooney was a popular local choice when he was named to take over from Eddie Jones after the disastrous 2007 season but has only managed to take the battling Reds to 12th (2008) and 13th (2009).
