Okey doke, I'm jumping on the Vaea for Wallabies squad train. Even if he doesn't make the 22, Wallabies camp experience would be a great leg up for him.

Houston is playing well for the Reds but he's not smashing his opponents for the Wobs 8 jersey.

It was great television, though - I cracked up when he introduced it. I can't remember the exact phrase, will have to find it. Barnes at 11, just super!

People people people - this is a "Wallabies" team after 5 weeks in the Super Rugby competition. I suspect he would select a different team if we were playing the All Blacks tomorrow. Keep your wigs on.

I don't mind Palu but what I can't work out wether all the man love is for his weight or his abilities. The best number 8 by far is Keran Reid and he is not a particually heavy man but by jingo he is impressive in how he uses what he has. This whole bigger is better concept really is a load of crap.

I don't think it is his size per se, but he does get across the advantage line better than most, if not all other 8s in Aus at the moment. And he is pretty good at getting the ball away from scrums, especially when they're under pressure. Read is the benchmark for me, I agree. For me, Palu is a combo of useful size and ability. Now he just needs some more game time and fitness. Houston could be very similar, given time, and an ongoing good cardio program.

I'm very happy with Palu as Wallabies number 8 - he has time to play into form, and honestly he balances out the whole 15. Even if he is not in form, the Wallabies need some bloke built like a brick shithouse to put his body out there, and suck up pretenders for our backs to run free.

Bigger is better!.... one word LOMU!..... Of coarse its not the primary aspect to a players abilities but size does give players an advantage. Id say strength is one of the best atributes for a forward (which is why Reid is so good, he's as strong as his larger opponents).

But I dont think that Lomu, or more recently SBW would have had the same impact on the game if it wasnt for there size. Its pretty simple, its harder to push something that weighs more! (which is very handy at scrums, rucks n mauls). Add strength, speed, and some decent offloading skills and u got urself Palu a pretty damn good number 8.

There is no question that Palu is a good player, But i guess a better question is.... is he playing below his weight? Should he be stronger for his size? Instead of being a good player could he be a great player?

It does frustrate the hell out of me when big players play below their weight, eg Chislomn. They have the weight advantage and dont use it.. what a waste.

Palu for me when in form is very very good. Leroy I'm still not convinced about - he becomes anonymous a lot of the time.

No-one else comes close to big Cliffy at the moment. I hope come RWC he is in top form.

Do you mean know one comes close too Cliffy on current form or once he is back at his best?

The Wallabies were certainly lacking some of the following last year:

Defence

Attack

Physically imposing players make the job of the rest of the team easier. If he can cause some doubt in the opposition or instigate a more venomous effort in contact situations from the players around him by being dominant, then by all means we want him. We can play small, skillful number 8s if we want, but in all honesty we have enough men doing that job in the forwards and not enough people making yards after contact. Unless Palu plays like crap, I want him there.

EDIT - PS; penalty/yellow card (however incorrect) notwithstanding in the defensive example
