The ACT XV v Fiji Warriors match has been moved to Viking Park no. 2 after constant rain has closed Seiffert Oval in Queanbeyan.

Fiji A 16 ACT XV 3.

Zack Holmes was the standout for the ACT in, like humanbeast said, was terrible conditions, although he missed 2 penalty shots. Dylan Sigg was also good and the fullback, Tyler Stephens, didn't do too bad either in a game that was dominated by forwards play. The match wasn't too bad in terms of handling considering how much rain there was but didn't live up to anything with long periods of play camped in one spot.

The Fijians defense was impressive tonight and held out the ACT at least 3 times after multiple phases and penalties in their own 22 and on their line and the scoreline doesn't reflect the possession and territory dominance by the home side.

Fiji's try was scored off an intercept from a botched backline move and were lucky not to score another through a similar incident.

Any word if it's the same team? Any injuries in the reds which will require player movement? Is Simmons hand okay? No word on the Reds website in regards to the game.

Sadly I'm just as in the dark as you. IMO Simmons will be fine, what's a little dislocation to a second rower?

I'd imagine the backline would be unchanged at least, didn't appear to be any injuries the other night. Looking forward to seeing CFS and UJ with ball in hand again.

Samoa beat Tahs A 20-5 (2 tries to 1)

Very different side to the one that played Tonga which was really a Tahs A side. This was basically the Sydney Academy side that lost to Brisbane. It showed in the physical battles where the Samoans were all over our lot. Some player notes later on

The Tahs A and the ACT XV losing... Does this mean our depth isn't that great or the PIs are getting better?

I can't comment on ACT XI but this was not a Tahs A side by any means, it didn't have one Super rugby player in it. The side they played before had a very strong pack where most players were contracted to the Tahs or where part of their trials against Tonga/Samoa and would've beaten Samoa. This was a Sydney Academy side plus some 1st grade ring ins..

I know this is heretical but I'm glad Fiji and Somoa won. Will do wonders for their nations which are going through some pretty hard times.

Fijians sink ACT XV in driving rain

By Brumbies Media Unit

An intercept try and a lack of discipline have cost the ACT XV a win at Viking Park on Wednesday night, falling 16-3 to the Fiji Warriors.

Played in driving rain, organisers were forced to change venue late on Wednesday afternoon after Seiffert Oval was declared unavailable due to the poor conditions.

The loss was the second for the ACT based team in a week and consigned it to the bottom of the Pacific Rugby Cup table. With just one game to play against Tonga A on Sunday, the ACT XV are now unlikely to figure in the competition’s top spots.

With heavy rain belting the southern suburbs of Canberra for most of the day, it was never going to be an expansive game of rugby and both teams traded penalty shots for the entire first 40.

ACT XV flyhalf Zack Holmes said while the result was disappointing he was pleased to have been selected to face the Fijians.

“The weather was always going to dictate how we played so it wasn’t really a surprise to be trading goals in that first half,” Holmes said.

“In the wet points are always going to be hard to come by so it was a bit disappointing for us to be giving them so many chances at goal. We made it too easy for them in that regard.

“In the end it was a good hit-out though. We will just have to refocus on Sunday and Tonga for the last game.”

The conditions didn’t help either kicker in the first half, with the Warrior’s No 10 Jonetani Ralulu managing just one from his four attempts and Zack Holmes one from three.

Going into the break at 3-3 both teams had tried to float the ball late with the Fijians looking the most likely to break the line, but handling errors prevented both sides from crossing for tries.

The second half started with more points, Ralulu kicking another penalty to give his side breathing room. The tempo of the game increased with busts to ACT XV’s Matt Hawke, Kimami Sitauti and Holmes, who all threatened but couldn’t capitalise on lazy Fijian defence.

The highlight of the second half was seeing a heavily-strapped Jerry Yanuyanutawa rampaging through his countrymen, galloping 50 metres to be stopped just outside his 22.

He and fellow Brumby Tevita Kuridrani were both born and raised in Fiji giving the match an extra element to the ACT XV’s last clash against the Samoans on Friday.

But despite the home team’s attempts to play running rugby, the Warriors again answered with points as outside-centre Josateki Nasilisili grabbed an intercept and ran 50 to put his side in a comfortable position. The big ball runner was too quick for ACT XV fullback Tyler Stevens, darting away for the only five-pointer of the match.

Ralulu’s conversion pushed the lead out to 13-3 with 20 minutes left to play and his final shot at goal 10 minutes later put the result comfortably in the Fijian’s favour.

The ACT XV now face Tonga A at Griffith Oval this Sunday, 3.30pm in their final Pacific Rugby Cup fixture for 2012.

Fiji Warriors 16 (Josateki Nasilisili try; Jonetani Ralulu 3 pens, con) bt ACT XV 3 (Zack Holmes pen).

Absolutely agree, and winning breeds confidence and encourages better skill development. Surely it can't be a bad thing for out young mostly 'schoolboy superstars' to get beaten up and welcomes to some senior physicality either.

Agree with there schoolboy comment. A few thoughts 'A' scrum was very solid, Loosehead very dominant earning a number of penalties. I also heard Cummins calling the lineouts during the game, in the wet rather good attacking although ineffective during defence. Samoan center pairing deffinately outplayed Meakes and Latunipulu very physical. Samoan winger had a monster boot clearing his territory easily on numerous occasions.

Reds beat Tonga tonight

Queensland A has scored their second consecutive Pacific Rugby Cup success with a commanding 23-8 victory over Tonga A at Ballymore on Thursday night.
Both teams entered the encounter with an attacking mindset with the sideline-to-sideline affair suiting the Queenslanders in the opening half as they shot out to a 10-0 lead before defending bravely to hold out the fast-finishing Tongans.
Tonga A looked certain to pull within a try late in the match although it was Queensland A captain Dallan Murphy who pulled off a magical try-saving tackle which allowed the home side to maintain their 13-3 buffer and close out the game.
The tackle by Murphy came after Tonga scooped up a loose ball from the scrum and provided a spark for Queensland A which resulted in two late-game tries to blindside flanker Curtis Browning and centre Nathaniel Gendle.
Murphy was a standout for the Reds, adding two penalties and a conversion to finish with an eight point personal tally, while Gendle, scrumhalf Nick Frisby and lock Tim Buchanan also produced strong performances.
The only downside to come from the encounter was injuries sustained to St.George Queensland Reds centre Chris F’Sautia, winger Mitchell Felsman and prop Ruan Smith.
F’Sautia looked menacing in the opening stages of the match before being forced from the field after pulling up lame midway through a damaging run.
Queensland A has now scored two straight wins after overcoming Fiji A 36-24 last Sunday and will be full of confidence heading into next Monday’s final PRC encounter against Samoa A (kickoff 6:40pm).
“We made huge improvements from our first game. We had a couple of sessions together in the lead-up to tonight and we’re really happy with the result,” Murphy said.
“We now want to go three from three when we turn out again on Monday.”
The contest was evenly matched in the opening stages with both teams showing a willingness to attack however it was the Queenslanders who struck first with Murphy kicking his side ahead 3-0 before vice-captain Tim Buchanan proved too strong close to the line to extend the margin to 10 points.
The Fijians enjoyed their best attacking opportunity of the opening 40 minutes when centre Otulea Katoa went streaking down the right touchline and looked destined to score before a desperate try-saving tackle by fullback Damon Murphy ensured the visitors remained on zero heading into the sheds.
Katoa struck first for the Tongans in the second half with a penalty goal in the opening five minutes bringing the score to 13-3.
Browning and Gendle crossed in the final 10 minutes to cap off a strong win although Tonga battled bravely to finish with a try on the final siren to flanker Samiu Vea.
Queensland A 23 (Tim Buchanan, Curtis Browning, Nathaniel Gendle tries, Dallan Murphy cons, 2 pens) def Tonga A 8 (Samiu Vea try, Otulea Katoa pen)

Big shame on F'Sautia by the sounds.

Any others news on the severity of his injury?

Apo played the best game I've seen him play at this level, he was excellent on defense, often putting in a big hit that caused the opposition to lose the ball. Once again he was also strong in contact able to get past the first defender, pump the legs and get into a dominant position. He has a great passing and offloading game and looked a little like Tapuai. Very exciting prospect and I suspect not too long before he achieves higher honors.

Haven't seen it yet but I haven't seen it required, he usually works in the 12 channel and uses footwork to get to ground or offload the ball.

The Samoan kicker was impressive, he nailed two 50m penalties although on a stadium ground they were probably more 40m ones.
