Oh well. Fair play to Fiji. Think it was a good campaign overall for NZ. Definitely better than last time, anyway. Curry was immense throughout, and Collier was good too.
Don't keep up with Sevens anywhere near as much these days, but seems NZ still have the physicality but still also struggle for pace. Leveraging that strength, and managing that shortcoming, by controlling possession for protracted periods is great -- and oddly satisfying to watch as it's quite un-Sevensy -- but sometimes you just need to give it to some speedy c*nt and tell him to go win you a gold medal. Unfortunately we didn't have that option today, but should be a priority for next time round.
Thus, two years out from the next Olympics, I think NZR need to do something like go out and get two or three of the latest Super Rugby young gun outside backs and inject them fulltime into the Sevens programme. Having guys like Nanai-Seturo, Rayasi, and Ratumaitavuki-Kneepkens in this squad with two years of experience, for instance, would've at least given us that option of throwing them the ball and ask for magic in return.
If they're going to give them the All Black branding, then they might as well start giving the Sevens programme some of the resources too. Especially as they're, you know, competing in the fucken Olympics.
