^^^^^^^ they're one behind Auckland & four ahead of Waikato so a win is all they need to finish 4th, in theory they could lose with a BP & go through thanks to having beaten Auckland in round robin play. Waikato thumping Wellngton & also finishing on 30 could make things a little trickier, though.

Wow. Wellington, having been awarded a try from a fairly obvious forward pass, now dodge a bullet when an 80/20 from Waikato (which the ref, who was in line, said he felt was backwards from the hands) gets called forward. Jesus wept.

Waikato pick up maximum points & join Auckland on 30. Waikato won the round robin match so if one of them were to through it'd be Waikato but I'm still pretty sure Tasman will get the four-try BP tomorrow, making the Top 4:

1. Canterbury (40) 2. Taranaki (37) 3. Tasman (34 & beat CM in week 7) 4. Counties Manukau (34)

Yep, that one had me shaking my head too! I actually thought the first one that was allowed, was more obviously forward than the second one denied!

I really dont uunderstand why the refereeing is so inconsistent, the TMO clearly let the first try stand because, "the pass wasnt clear and obviously forward" but then decides the second one was ok - seeming to ignore the need for it to be "clear and obvious".

This round has seen a series of howlers from the referees, and I dont like criticising refs, but it is frustrating at this level of professional sport. Still, I guess the players make plenty of mistakes in a game too!

(you were right about Tasman and the BP, not needed, but still desirable!)

BoP now 3rd in the Championship having beaten Manawatu in round robin so Turbos will miss the SF assuming Harbour beat Northland tomorrow.

As an unbiassed but interested bystander watching the Mitre 10 games, I don't think it is seriously criticising the referees by pointing out their mistakes. I have to say that imo the standard of officiating by the NZ referees has been undeniably poor this year and last. Can't say that I've seen any who are consistent in their decision making, particularly in relation to forward passes and knock ons.

Tasman just snuck past Southland, 56-0. Got the bonus point though, so get to play 'naki in the semi.

Bring it on!

@Whaiopehu Oldboy, Why is there a "H' in Whanganui, but not in Wanganui?

Are you Whaiopehu Oldboy or Waiopehu Oldboy, or both interchangeably?

Some years ago the people in charge of place names added the "h" to the town & river formerly known as Wanganui. To the best of my knowledge the people who run rugby in those parts have so far chosen not to.

And it's always "Waiopehu", old boy :)

Not sure how familiar you are with the Maori language and pronunciation, but the 'f' sound is spelt 'wh', hence Whangarei and whanau. (fangarei and fanau to our ears) There is also the constanant 'W' which sounds the same as in english - eg waka or canoe.

The Whanganui tribe had a slightly different pronunciation and the 'f' sound was barely aspirated hence the early settlers heard it as 'Wanganui' and up until recently it was spelt and pronounced that way, at the request of local Maori it was changed formally in 2015 I believe. Up until then either spelling was deemed acceptable. No doubt there are still some historical hangovers where the name hasnt been corrected.

Looking forward to the Mitre 10 Finals, its been a fantastic comp, as usual, and by far the most entertaining non-test rugby televised. Quite a feast of rugby this weekend witht he Mitre 10 and the Eden Park test. I may not get much fishing in!

Some stats from the M10 Cup regular season:

Most run metres: 812, Rieko Ioane (next best 695)
Most clean breaks: 22, Rieko Ioane (next best 20)
Most defenders beaten: 62, Rieko Ioane (next best 59)
Most tries: 10, Rieko Ioane (next best 7)

Not bad given he missed a game when called into the AB as injury cover. Could be a bolter for EOYT :)
