Geetting to be a habit & it still makes me blush.

Anyway, sad to see that it looks like I was right – I don’t know why, I kept hearing that his dad was keen on Rugby but that his mum was a dyed in the wool league (Canterbury) fan!

Did he play yesterday?

City vs. Country U/16's

I'm confused! Is there going to be any team picked after this weekends City vs. Country U/16 game? If so, what is it and does anyone know the program for this team? Thanks, Wreckless

He played but didn't stand out. Perhaps because he just arrived after a game of league but he tends to hold on to the ball too long and doesn't pass when he should. He's got a good build for either game and that's about the only thing I noticed about him. Look forward to seeing some more of him at the weekend game.

One person from the Canterbury team that stood out was the No.4 - did a lot of work bringing down those big Merrylands boys and No.4 would have been the smallest guy on the field.

Why weren't Clarke, Roberts, and Junior not playing for Merrylands? Injured perhaps. Oh well the team came back from being down so proves they can do it without the stars - except Afele was brilliant!

Don't know about that but heard that the Sydney team is being "reselected" tonight. Not sure what "reselected" means either?

Did Merrylands v. Joeys last week???

Gentlemen,

I am hearing a report that Merrylands U/16's played a game against Joeys last week and defeated them quite convincingly! Can anyone confirm?

From my understanding a NSWJRU U16 team will be picked following the Sydney v Country game, however there may be players that play club who are also in the NSW schools team, these players will also be eligable. Not sure how they will fit into the selection criteria though. I did notice NSW selectors at the regionals though so they may be taking that form into consideration. With regards to Sydney being reselected i am aware of a few injury concerns in both Sydney 15's and 16's, therefore some new players will be joining both of the squads.

Kiwi,

He didn't come from a league game my friend, I asked this question of his coach; he arrived late because he was at NSW Schools training that morning at Newington.

With respect to not playing well, in the second half I am sure I seen Morgan put the rampaging Robert Taufa (hell I love this lad) into the clear on at least four occasions? In one such instance he put Taufa in for a try. Both made (a normally very safe) Winterstien look very indecisive throughout the whole of the second half and it was only the cover defence of the Merrylands flankers that prevented Taufa from scoring a hat-trick. From reviewing my notes I also have Morgan cutting back in toward a ruck and making a solid 40-45m up the centre of the field beating several tackles along the way. Morgan's defence (like the rest of the Canterbury team) left a lot to be desired I must admit!

IMO the Canterbury backs were their saving grace. I was particularly impressed with Kagiassis who scored a brilliant try in the early stages of the first half. With respect to your assessment of the Canterbury's #4; I could not agree with you more (did he not come of injured toward the end). Nonetheless, for mine the game was won in the forwards and the Canterbury forwards seemed to be somewhat apprehensive, especially with a run-a-way Afele coming their way. Ultimately this where the game was eventually decided with three great tries in 10 short minutes coming on the back of great close quarter forward play. I was especially impressed with the Merrylands flanker whose number I meant to write down after the game. He was tireless! A truly sensational player!

On a final note I was a little disappointed not to see Jake Robert play! I have not seen him play since State Championship where IMO certain Norths and Gordon players got the (very rare) better of him. Nevertheless the surprise appearance of Afele more than made up for his omission. Correct me if I am wrong but I am almost positive that I saw Afele in a leg cast at the SJRU v. KG (Japan School) game!

Anyway we're off to the City v Country game this weekend! My money is on the 'Boys from the Bush' this year. They were awesome at Regional and SJRU do not seem to have their 'MOJO' this year I am afraid. Nevertheless SJRU have the rampaging Afele in their corner and unless some Country forward is ready and willing to step up to the plate and take him on we can expect him to make huge metres for City. If he does you can almost guarantee a sniping and astute Jamo Clark will capitalise on such runs! Clark’s battle with Tulloch will be a enough to get the crowds in alone!

See you out there sports fans!

Newbie.

Might be this weekend - I think Joeys are scheduled to play Sydney High - but High are not that strong and Joey's may be looking for an alternative to the standard TAS match up - I know that Newington 1st XV played Oatley U17 or opens when they were meant to play High / TAS.

Quite correct - the match was played 2 weeks ago when most of Sydney was washed out, except for a few 1sts & 2nds matches, on a Joey's pitch that continues to earn it's reputation as one of the very best in Sydney. It was as dry as a bone, apparently. Not quite right with the score though - 7 to 5 if the report I heard was correct, with Joeys opting nopt to kick for goal, perhaps. The boys from the west consisted of some Merrylands & Rooty Hills (?) players ( apologies if I have left any other club / team players out), and was more of a combined team - possibly brought together at short notice to take up the opportunity of playing against the Jo boys. I understnd that the match was a pretty physical encounter, however was played in the right spirit. The boys from the west truly amazed at playing in front of a full house at Joeys - supporters and all - and were warmly clapped off the ground afterwards.

Sounds like it was a very positive experience, and one that could see more such matches occuring ( probably in the older age groups like 15's & 16's only) - with the ever changing club competitons seeing less teams entering iin these age groups, and offering to play against private school teams who may be facing a bye, for whatever reason.

Merrylands/Rooty Hill v's Joeys

This is my first year involved in Sydney rugby having lived in the UK for a number of years and I enjoyed the trip to Joeys.

I thought the score could have been much worse for the GPS side. They only got near the try line once, the other boys probably blew 4 tries. Solid game. As a newbie (not the newbie obviously) I have seen a lot of great young talent out in the west particularly in the Merrylands and Rooty Hill teams. A lot of that talent seems to fly under the radar.

My young bloke has been lucky enough to make it through to NSW schools u16 for the nationals, and that team looks quite impressive, not that I have much to compare them to. We were also involved with the Sydney Barbarians team that have received some favourable reviews on this forum. A great bunch of rubgy boys in all the teams my guy has been involved with this season. Long may that continue.

Looking forward to the nationals.

Sir,

You truly apitomise what the spirit of rugby should be!

I whole heartedly agree with your sentiments about Western Sydney. If Australian rugby wants to move forward and become a consistent force on the international stage it needs to embrace competitions where schools and clubs play each other on a regular basis. Not just in Sydney but the whole of NSW (and QLD for that matter).

However as your name (or alias) suggests, I am mystified how an intelligent man such as yourself could ever support a team of West Midland pretenders? LMAO!!

Have you never heard of London Irish ... such a pity ... I thought we could actually be friends ... lmao!!

Regards,
newbie.

"Impermissible"

Love it!! What a brilliant new word !! Combining both present and past tense to convey something that one should have known!!

Well done Newbie,... with your permission I might utilise it to my advantage in the future.

No comments on the team?

IMO Cam Orr is wasted at 1 - would have much preferred him at 4-8 given his capacity to run the ball and general mobility. But then I look at who they've got there and it's certainly Sydney's strength - Morris/McCalman combination is first class at 6 and 7 and Afele in his 2011 slimline mode has found his real position at 8 rather than the front row. What a future he has ahead of him if he wants it. Matson is the consumate workhorse and so much of what he does can go un-noticed - good to see the selectors aren't blind to that. Williams also has plenty of class. The weak link is the front row and they'll certainly struggle at the Nationals against Schools with Jarrod M and Matt Sandell at 1 and 3. Sydney have imo made the right choice however with Koutsoukis at 2 as he's quite a busy player.

The backs are interesting... Jones and Clarke are simply outstanding individuals who can both do absolutely brilliantly breathtaking things. Winterstein and Redden are also class players. I just don't know however that as a unit the Sydney 9 -15 can deliver the cohesion Country's and Schools backlines are likely to. Time no doubt will tell. Surprised George Taufu didn't get starting jersey.
