Congratulations to all the players involved in todays trials. All 6 games were of a high standard and played in great spirit. Scores aren't really relevant, it's the level of competition that is, to help determine who will be able to compete at the next level. From what we've watched over the past fortnight I'd be surprised if the following players are denied a state jumper tonight. In no particular order;

CHS - Batho
Calcagno
Broome
Wessels
Tanginoa
Manu
Northam
Fangia
Gutherson
Vaessen
Leao

GPS - Ala'alatoa
Amituani
Guilfoyle
Kovacic
Walters
Wells
Merriman
Stewart
Le Lievre

ISA - Purcell
Dombkins
Natoli

CAS - Lawley
Orr
Debreczeni

CCC and COUNTRY sorry didn't see anyone outstanding. This isn't a criticism, just nobody caught my eye. Will be looking forward to the usual selection controversey on who's in or out.

Can anybody (Lee) give a match report on ISA v CAS and the CHS v GPS game?

GPS 1s 14 - CHS 1s 14, wasn't there but there's the scoreline... Keen on any match reports.....

CHS II V COUNTRY

CHS large forward pack dominated possession throughout and on the back of 4-5 classy players had too many answers for COUNTRY who hurt themselves by turning over possession when attacking that led to points against them through good counter from CHS. Overall assessment CHS too big, too fast against a brave COUNTRY outfit. Outstanding players CHS 8,10,14.

CAS II v CCC

CCC started strongly and were pressing CAS when a dropped pass led to a 7 pointer and deflated CCC while CAS lifted. Further tries came and CAS had built a comfortable lead going to oranges. Second half and CCC continued to attack and were rewarded with a try around the midpoint. CAS appeared to have clocked off but came with a late try to seal a solid win. Outstanding players CAS - 2,5,15 CCC -14

GPS II v ISA II

It's the simple things done well that can win or lose a game. Against quality opposition you have to minimise the mistakes like failing to find touch from your penalty kicks and ISA didn't on 2 occassions which ultimately allowed GPS to reverse the pressure and score points. The ISA forwards took on their much vaunted opposition and matched them at set piece and bettered them at the breakdown. Around the 45 minute mark GPS put on a couple of quick back to back scores to open up an unassialable lead and then posted further scores off the back of ISA errors when pushing passes in an effort to close the gap. The final score while comprehensive wasn't indicative off the difference between the two teams and some players reputations were tarnished against a willing opposition. Outstanding players GPS - 4,12,6 ISA - 7,5,8

CAS I v ISA I

Like their II's ISA started well and there were early exchanges of tries as the game opened up. The 10's were showing their class and probing the opposition backlines with well directed passes and inside plays. ISA paid a hefty price at the scrum with CAS taking three strikes against the feed and the extra possession made ISA defend for long periods and left holes around the rucks that CAS exploited to score a couple of easy tries and the score got out to 31 - 10. Late in the second half Isa started to get equal share of possession and the game toook a different shape. ISA played some enterprising rugby to post 2 quick tries and we had a game on our hands. 3 more minutes may have led to a draw but it wasn't to be and CAS secured a close win. Outstanding players ISA - 6, 10, 12 CAS - 1, 6, 10

CHS I v GPS I

Best till last. A clash of 2 styles with one side playing an intense structured game against an open free running side looking to break out at any turnover. This is not to denegrade either side as they both had a crack and provided a tense, flowing, open game. The individual battles generally finished like the scoreline of 14 all and these two teams should provide the bulk of the state sides. Outstanding players GPS - 1,5,8,9,12,15 CHS - 1,6,8,9,12,13,14,15

Well done to all involved.

That was a good day of rugby.

Some stray thoughts – not meaning to be comprehensive:

CHS IIs 38 – Country 7 - All comments are for CHS players.
• Fairly even 1st half but CHS showed better skill and fitness in the 2nd.
• 12. Milne was MOM. Elusive; tough, clever, sympathetic, good anticipation, strong when stopped; passed ball in both hands chest to tacklers; a smokey.
• 11. Kavaefia: broke tackles; good work ethic.
• 14. Moeakiola: hard in traffic; worked well with 11 and 15; scored top team try.
• 15. Asquith: set up mentioned team try; tough nut.

CAS IIs 31 – CCC 10
• CCC played some good rugby but players were too bunched up sometimes. CAS more polished and superior scrum.
• CAS 2. Morsello: best hooker of day: hard runner, big engine; smokey.
• CAS 5. Ingram-Melsam: big unit; deft hands; skilful; likes contact; hard to stop near goal line; scored a power try.
• CCC 9. Massina: gave his outsides every chance; top pass.
• CCC 14. Sefuiva: like Kiwi Nanai-Williams; slippery; wriggly; frustrating to tackle; scored 2 tries with mostly own efforts.

GPS IIs 47 – ISA IIs 5 - All comments are for GPS players but ISA 5. Cullinane had some good runs.
• ISA hampered by poor passing and GPS too polished and skilful.
• 4. Whiteley: smokey for versatility as 7; took own team's kick-off like shelling peas; good running and all-round game.
• 6. Dempsey: best player of the day in any team, albeit against a weak side; hardly ever loses the ball; country people were saying: “Why is this guy playing IIs?” I had no answer. Officials should check if he had a twin brother on the park; did everything. Has to be in some NSW team.
• 10. Horwitz: lost ground, some passes too hard and others off target.
• 12. Foketi: better game than Tuesday; good move and fend for try create; back in frame.
• 13. Jones: did well again in absence of Roods; drew man and passed nicely.
• 15. Gallagher: some good runs; some greedy play; terrific conversions near touch – best goal kicker of day.

CAS Is 31 – ISA Is 24
• Not a lot of notable contenders but ended up a good game, especially 2nd half.
CAS
• 1. Lawley: part of good scrum; not so noticeable away from tight as Tuesday.
• 3. Talakai: Late bid for spot; played most of game today IIRR; could bookend with Lawley.
• 6. Orr: came into frame as versatile 6 to add to lock ability; always present; good worker; hard.
• 8. Sio – more noticeable today; better drive on contact.
• 13. Scarano – another good display; took best option available; smokey; got card for head high.
• 10. Debreczeni – better today; good when on burst for try and try create, but not often enough.
ISA
• 6. Dombkins – fresher, healthier and therefore better than Sunday.
• 10. Purcell – swapped to flyhalf but did not have longer accurate pass of 10; intelligent; big game player. Long goal kick.
• 9. Natoli – promoted as expected; not every pass stellar; cheeky; snipey; pain in the arse.
• 13. Menzies – quality; understated but effective; good options; nifty for try create.

CHS Is 14 – GPS Is 14
• Closeness of score did not surprise those who had seen all trials. Close defence both sides admirable but made it hard for both teams to get rhythm. Expected tiredness to open things up but the lads stayed on the job.
• GPS more chances and run of play but draw fair result. Came back well to tie after CAS scored Northam try against run of play. CHS better scrum.
CHS
• Broome: played after all (with 8 jersey !!). Played majority of game; best 7 of day though GPS 7. Walters very good.
• 9. Wessells: better game than Sunday but has he done enough?
• 10. McIntrye: better game, moved team around well.
• 11. Tanginoa: not as many chances as in two earlier games but still managed to do Ioane imitations. Done enough.
• 12. Manu: power game; excellent leg drive on contact; best game of series for him.
• 13. Northam: better; dished out for 1st try and more sympathetic; back in frame.
• 15. Gutherson: terrific 1st half; assured; long kick from hand, everything class.
GPS

• 1. Ezra A: Power game on pick and drive especially in 2nd half (and I'm not just saying that because I was sitting next to his mum); came back into frame despite scrum not stellar.
• 4. Rorke: noticeable for hard defence; smokey.
• 5. Kovacic: not as good as Tuesday blinder but has done enough.
• 8. Wells: best game I have seen from him this year; did everything on attack and defence and ran like a back passing with ball in both hands and square to tacklers.
• 9. Merriman: has done enough but threw some close passes too hard including one when setting up for winning try that wasn't.
• 10. Vaux: took ball at speed and always a threat; also threw some too hard passes for close supports; has done enough also.
• 11. Roye: better footie skills shown and worked well with 14. Kellaway when together including scoring 1st try. Kellaway will be big match player when older.
• 12. Stewart: play did not go his way; so did not shine except on defence, but would get picked on Scots and Tues. efforts.
• 15. Le Lievre: was outplayed by Gutherson until money part of game. Not many chances. Big boot from hand again evident; nailed money conversion from touch to tie game despite advice of CHS players who had already played; launched counter attack for last GPS attack from own 22 with deft pass, but a too hard pass near CHS line by team mate ended game. Could get spot as big match player.

I have seen too many trial games to nominate players for NSW Is and NSW IIs with certainty, especially as selectors are fond of combining players. The selectors have a better than average choice of players across the board except at hooker and the 2nd row. There is some outstanding depth in the backrow and the back three, and better than average in the halves (9 and 10) – not that the average of recent halves has been stellar.

Good luck with selections lads.

PS - Good report stonecutter.

It's selection time and folks are reminded that they should not mention things like:

- the selectors are biased
- NTS/Gold players get preference
- rugby politics is obviously a part of selections
- players from .... (fill in the space) ..... don't get a fair shake
- etc etc and yarda, yarda

... in any other thread but this one:

http://www.greenandgoldrugby.com/forum/threads/8261-Schools-selection-politics-and-bias-NTS-unfairness-etc.?p=227340#post227340

Posters are warned that posts referring to these subjects can get deleted, even if they are just part of the post.

By all means mention that you have an opinion you have posted on the politics etc thread that others may be interested in reading, and provide the link.

Thank you.

Always been like that it goes NSW 1's run on, NSW 2's run on, NSW 1's bench, NSW's 2's bench respectively.

Andrew Kellaway made 2s and he's only in year 10? will be interesting to see how he goes in years to come.

also pleased to see Lalakai in there.

It looks to me like they have tried to keep certain combinations together. 1s seems to be a lot of CHS and AIC, where 2s is 15/15 GPS and CAS. Have never seen anything like it, and it isn't the worst idea.
