Went and had a bit of a look at the 13s final seeing as it was nearby, Gordon were far too strong for Souths, winning 48-17. Gordon dominated the game and most impressively played a team game rather than relying on a couple of star players as often is the case in young age groups.

As is customary, the Southern coach, who was nearby, carried on a bit and made a bit of a scene with a ground manager after he jumped the fence to talk to his team after they conceded a try. He and a few other Southern parents had a fair dig at the referee which was both sad and amusing considering they were down 43-7 at the time. One quote I enjoyed was 'you don't get a fair go without a senior referee' - the referee in question is a local Newcastle lad in his late teens who referees colts and seniors most weekends and handled the game very well.

I was impressed overall with the quality of the two sides and the way they played for 12 and 13 year olds. Great for Newcastle to host a comp like this and from what I've heard the travelling teams were very impressed with the new facility.

Congratulations to Kerry Brady and her Committee, and all the volunteers behind the scenes for their outstanding coordination efforts to run the venues over the weekend.

While everyone has an opinion regarding the timing and format of the JSC and the overall pathway, most will agree that the actual execution of the plan for the weekend seemed to go off without a hitch.

Without question.

Congrats to the Penrith Emu's u12's who defeated Manly 19-0 to be crowned NSWJRU state champs for 2014. The boys knocked off Central coast 62-0, Gordon 26-12, Melbourne 52-0, Illawarra 45-5 (QF) Randwick 17-10 (SF) & then Manly in the GF.

From little things big things grow!

U14s final was a fantastic game between ACT and Gordon, the 2 teams who have played structured, running rugby all weekend. At oranges Gordon were up 10-5 and it looked like they might finally get the silverware on the fifth attempt for many in the team. Unfortunately, someone forgot to tell ACT who ran in 2 fine second half tries to take the title with a 17-10 score line. Some very good players on both teams, with each back line in particular showing real pace and ability with the ball through the hands. Fantastic to watch

Where are Sydney Juniors going to get a squad of Under 18's from?

There are 11 Teams in the SJRU Opens competition, which covers Under 17's and Under 18's age groups. How many of this years SJRU Opens are in the Under 18 category?

Most of last years SJRU Under 17 team (potentially the nucleus of this years U18's) seem to be playing for Colts in 2014 as far as I can see.

Will there be a "Grandfather" rule for eligibility for players from Schools and Colts?

I am looking forward to a further version of the fun and games that existed to trial and select the 2013 SJRU Under 17's.

<snip>

I guess the answer is here.

I noticed this in the 2014 Junior State Champs Programme:

Under 18's Representative Pathway
As there is no State Championship for this age group, the regionals will be an open trial to all age eligible players from SJRU and Colts (that have previously played Juniors). The squad will then be split into two separate teams "Possibles" and "Probables" which will contest trial matches at Regionals.

Have the existence of this rep team selection process been advertised anywhere apart from being buried on page 44 of the JSC Programme, or will there be a invitations issued to just a select few of the usual suspects?

It seems that the U18 regionals/selection trials will take place on 28/29 June, with a game against the Country 18's at the Sydney vs Country festival at Tamworth on 27 July.

Looks like there will not be a NSW JRU Under 18 team selected from the Tamworth Game.

PROBLEM 1. Colts Round 14 is being played on 28 June. How many age eligible Colts will give up a normal club competition round to have a go at a Sydney Juniors Possibles vs Probables Trial?

PROBLEM 2. Aust Schools RU National U18 Championships take place over the first week in July at Riverview. Teams need to be in camp on 29 June. How many age eligible Under 18 schoolboys that have previously played Juniors and have been selected in NSW I, NSW II or Combined States will be interested in trying out for SJRU U18's on the weekend before they go into camp for Nationals?

Great effort by Central coast, undefeated at country champs and jsc! Not bad for an age group that has less than 80 registered players in the u17 age group. Also they are the first central coast team to win a junior state title I believe. We'll done boys!

I must say that over the years my wife has always admired how your boys threw the ball across the back line, although many times without fruition.

Congratulations on the 'Double' ;)

Shute Shield should have a free weekend on June long weekend. This will allow senior clubs to support juniors. The juniors could also incorporate the weekend at same location as 16s & 17s JC to hold u18s trials for Sydney team. The beauty of this is there are selectors, officials & facilities all there and it avoids the mad rush to squeeze trials in late June & still time to have a training squad of probables before selecting final squad.
