I am sure if you contacted the Rep Rugby Coordinator for NSW JRU they would be able to pass on that information.
The NSWJRU web site says this person is Kerry Brady contactable by email here: kerry@eastsrugby.com.au.

There is a mobile phone number for Kerry on this website if you have a desperate need to have a constructive conversation with Kerry
here-> . http://nswjuniors.rugbynet.com.au/default.asp?type=committee

To the best of my knowledge KB (Kurtley Beale) is a volunteer and I am sure that Kerry would quickly terminate any calls that are a simple out and out rant.

If NSW JRU are anything like SJRU, they advertise for Selectors for the next season about now-ish.

SJRU website http://juniors.rugbynet.com.au/default.asp?type=library have a Selector and Coach nomination form on their Resource library. They usually publish who the successful candidates are on their website, but you have to be quick as the website does not appear to still have this years selector and coach panel published.

HJ,

I take my hat off to you Sir! Your sense of reason and perspective in these discussions is greatly appreciated!

It maybe a thought (and I know you have had extensive coaching experience from your earlier posts), have you considered going into the administrative side of the game? Perhaps you already have!

Newbie,

Been there, Done that. Moved on due to Head. Brick Wall. Hurt. Syndrome.

Coached, Managed, Refereed, Touch Judged, Administered, Fund Raised, BBQ'd, Canteened, Raffle Ticketed, Spectatored, Ground Managered, Judiciaried, and First Aided more than I'd care to admit. For my sins have also done some time in Mungoland as well, but mainly at bbq, canteen, fund raiser, and semi-disinterested spectator level.

There are too many vested interests who have zero intent of implementing a level playing field for all. In their eyes a level playing field concept is fine provided that the level field is tilted in their direction.

I still like to pass on my observations, but I prefer to spend my limited and precious spare time with the Junior Jarses rather than assist others fluff their own egos and maintain a flawed system.

There are a few good eggs out there in Administration land, but their efforts are to often nullified by the self interested ego seekers and manipulators. I have better things to do with my time, such as whinging (educating) via Gaggerland.

I trekked out to the bush to watch the games and I was somewhat bemused by some of the selections TBH.

Can someone explain if a coach's son becomes ineligible for selection in the NSWJRU team because their father was the coach of SJRU team?

There were two SJRU lads who I thought were worthy of selection in the NSW team; Laga'aia (the prop) and Hanigan the lock. I'm quite mystified at the non-selection of these two, especially Laga'aia who not only outplayed his opposition but was by far the best SJRU prop!

This is exactly what happened to Trent Winterstein after the last years Regionals (i.e. was the best player and wasn't an original SJRU selection until the uproar of complaints).

:( :(. :(

But Newbie.... Arent you that coach ?

CC,

I can assure you that I am not? Better still I am willing to put a wager on it! I am sure that we can enlist one of the 'Staff' members to 'prove' and 'uphold' the integrity of the bet! ;)

So smart Alec what say you? Perhaps $1/2K?

Both SJRU and NSWJRU look to have their coaching panels appointed by the start of the season. The successful candidates have no affiliation with the age group, are L2 qualified and many come with a 'coaching team'.

In respect to selectors the 'panel' implemented this year comprised of the coach of the team being selected for plus the coach of the next higher team. For example, the SJRU U15 coach + the NSW U15 coach would be selecting the Sydney U15 team. In most cases another selector and/or the Rep Convenor oversaw the process with some input if requested.

Requests for nominations usually are emailed to Club Presidents and broadcast generally around Jan/Feb each year. Good luck.

Word along the grape vine is an Under 17's Australian Junior Rugby Team to be selected from Vic, ACT, NSW and QLD

And what purpose would that serve?

Would they be playing the Darkness Under 17's or some other international touring team Under 17 team?

Is this just another spray Jacket to add to the collection of "look at me, I'm someone important" attire to be worn at sporting events for the Manager and administrators of the Australian Junior Rugby Union?

What Australian Under 17 Junior Rugby Team would not include the potential for Western Australian Players to join in on the fun?

Would boys playing School only footy be able to play or is this limited to boys playing junior club footy at Under 17 level?

Are the loopholes available that allow kids who do not play junior club footy regularly to become eligible provided thay turn out on the long weekend in June for state championships?

What happens if the School does a "Jones" on a player and does not release them due to "1st XV committments"?

This really sounds like an idea that has been hatched at the Lunatic Asylum known as Moore Park?

My snouts suggests that this does not have Paddington fingerprints on it and that they may indeed be opposed to it - rather it appears to be the brainchild of the junior unions - NSW & QLD!

It was a hot topic of conversation on the sidelines of a few GFs on the weekend.

BUT yes - it has the hallmark of legitimising handing out yet more gear to "worthy" hanger ons.

Last year the Australian Junior Rugby Union was resurrected by Paul Taylor (it had been dormant for a number of years but still had a bank acct etc). Taylor steps down this year as President of NSWJRU and desperately needed another gig to maintain kudos!

Taylor appointed a full time administrator in Brisbane (circa $100k pa) to 'legitimise' the AJRU and wants to have tours to provide a pathway for club players (or maybe to compete with the prestigious Aust Schools' UK and other tours).

Funding will not be by sponsorship or fundraising dinners but by a levy on all junior players (incl minis)!

This sounds like a recipe for disaster. Jobs for the boys and more ego stroking.
Unless the Schools boys are released, this will hardly be a representative Australian team, and unless they play against very carefully selected opponents, they will be a national embarrassment achieving results not dissimilar to those of Sydney Grammar in the AAGPS 1st XV competition.

The Peak bodies really need to sort out the BS between Aust Schools and Aust Juniors, and State Schools and State Juniors. So much waste, that we can ill afford.

If George is right regarding funding, I can also see some fairly serious push back from the Junior clubs, particularly those that don't field teams at High School ages.

If the snouts want an Australian Junior Rugby "Look At Me, I'm important" range of clothing, then FFS write to KooGa or Canterbury and buy the damn thing. A Decent showerproof jacket is only about $120. I am sure that they could afford that. Do not burdon ALL kids and parents in clubland.

This has Don Quixote written all over it, and appears to be the most ill considered concept I have heard of since the Peter Garratt Home Insulation fiasco.

Surely a cheaper option to stroke Mr Taylor's ego would be to establish an NSW JRU Presidents Honour Board like they do at Schools for the School Captain. Mr Taylor could have his name painted on that board, and received a nice plaque as well for his Pool Room. Far cheaper. Less impact. Taylor and cohorts egos should be satisfied.

If they actually want to have a viable alternate pathway to Aust Schools RU at U17 level, then do not create this artificial 2nd grade Quixotic construct entitled Australian Under 17's which would be monstered by NSW GPSII's let alone what QLD Whites would do to them.

Get off your chuff, down out of your ivory tower, roll up your sleeves and engage with CCC and CHS schools and encourage them to participate in Junior rugby as school representative teams if the school can not put together a stand alone team. There is an enormous talent pool available there, which if engaged with properly and developed could one day compete with the GPS/CAS/ISA teams.

Rather than continue to select from a small pool for Aust Under 17's, what are their plans to grow the pool of eligible Under 17's?
I'd be very surprised is any of the QLD and NSW GPS boys would be available for Under 17's duties.

Where does this Under 17's team feature in the ARU Pathway to Gold programme?
The ARU don't seem to recognise this artifice in their current literature, which leads me to think that there is little point in this folly. Farting against thunder springs to mind. http://www.rugby.com.au/tryrugby/PathwaytoGold.aspx

The Pathway to Gold program comprises of the following national programs:
· National U16 Championship
· Rugby’s Pathway to Gold Talent Discovery Program
· National Schoolboy Championships
· Australian Schoolboys Program
· Junior Gold Youth Sevens Program – Boys & Girls
· Junior Gold Program
· National Gold Squad
· National Academy
· Australian U20s

I will be less critical of this endeavour if it had ARU and State RU body endorsement and funding, and was part of an overall integrated (and funded) growth strategy.

It just sounds like the decision making process has been nearly identical to that of a couple of drunks down at the Cross at 4am on a Sunday Morning after an awesome Saturday night on the sauce agreeing that it would be cool idea to get a tattoo right now.

The whole structure and calendar need revamping. You are right about players not being released. This year has already seen enough grief for 2 lifetimes around GPS schools thinking and behaving inappropriately about who and when boys can play. It is fair enough to dictate to scholarship holders (on the basis that you are contracted to play) but if you a Full fee Paying member then what a kid gets up to on the weekend in a controlled sanctioned sporting activity shouldn't be a concern of the school. On an extreme example if a kid was playing in the local church's brass band would Scots prohibit him from playing the pipes? or if a kid is marching in some gay atheist protest would Joeys or View expel him (hang on they wouldn't but Shore or the Anglican church would). anyway you get my drift.

If the AJRU started rep teams and tours it will only go to serve another example of the disfunction within community rugby in Australia. Aust Schools RU have always done their own thing. It is just a shame that by favouring the private schools the kids in the public system feel disenfranchised and gravitate to League and in the future AFL where they are well supported.

Just as an aside to the current thread on this forum - the day at Ballymore 6 October should be a great day of rugby with NSW playing Qld in U15, U17 and U19

George, HJ et al,

Further to the commentary on this matter, it is interesting to note that the NSW JRU have not yet uploaded Annual Reports for the years 2009, 2010 & 2011. Might make for some interesting reading….

In addition, the process to actually land a position on this erstwhile body seems shrouded in mystery to most that I have contacted - is extremely difficult to follow – let alone actually nominate for the gig! As always, there will always be those unheralded people who end up doing the bulk of the leg-work, one presumes, while others yearn for the “Spay jacket + Logo”. At least that it appears to have been the case in past years, if anecdotal commentary is anything to go by.

The whole issue of selecting – for example – a NSW U17 team – to compete against Qld was shown to be a bit of a disaster – at least back as far as 2009 / 2010 – when the Queenslanders with their full cohort of available players ( yes, Schools, Club, Reps, NTS squad, league players – the lot) – really gave the NSW team a belting. And this is not to denigrate any of the NSW players – they tried their guts out – but were simply out of their depth on many occasions. A result of NSWJRU selecting only those playing through the Club system – and certainly not a level playing field.

I am not sure if this still the case however – hopefully not ! But by the tone/content of some of the responses listed here to date, I don’t think I will be holding my breath !

As for the notion of an Australian U17 team ……..please, give it a rest NSWJRU. Get your own house in order first before you attempt to stuff something else up.

And as for charging minis to fund this – whatever happened to the principle of “user pays” - it seems to apply everywhere else these days ! And good luck trying to justify / explain that to parents of 6 year olds when they register for the first time – as to why the club fees are so high.

Lastly – perhaps a slightly different perspective on the private school thing – whereby schools might “encourage” those wishing to participate in the senior opens teams not play club rugby.

There has been plenty written on these forums about the amount of time seemingly devoted now to training by these senior boys – and it would appear quite common for them to have several training sessions, weights sessions, reviewing videos etc a week – which seems to have become the norm in this semi professional environment. ( Gone are the days of training on Tuesday & Thursday arvo only !)

Given the expectations seemingly placed on the boys and their coaches – is it possible that the schools coaches are in a sense wanting control of how much actual work the boys are doing – so that they don’t get “overtrained”, exhausted – whatever you want to call it ??
And given the physicality that appears the norm – the possibility of injury must increase significantly if some poor kid had to play in excess of 25 matches a season (plus training, plus travelling etc etc )

Is it just possible that the coaches are actually trying to show a degree of care that perhaps those boys parents should be considering ?

And before I get howled down – I am referring only to the Opens age group – not the U12’s, U13’s etc etc

Anyway – just something to ponder ……

Cheers

Some very thought provoking points Hound, and hard to disagree with.

Love the masonic secrecy associated with executive and committee participation at NSW JRU and AJRU.
Makes you wonder what they are trying to hide doesn't it.

Separate thread has been started to discuss the Australian Junior Rugby Union to encourage some of our interstate readers who may have some thoughts on the issue to participate in the debate.

http://www.greenandgoldrugby.com/community/threads/australian-junior-rugby-union.11657/

Regarding the proposal to levy all junior players for AJRU costs, I have done some rough and ready calculations, and believe that 10% of every sausage sanger profit from EVERY Junior Rugby BBQ anywhere in Australia (Schools BBQ's excluded) will be required to fund the AJRU administrator and one national championship.

Dear AJRU President,

NO THANKS.

Yours in Rugby
