One of the longest kicks I have ever seen at Newington. 52 metres out. No time left. L. Day does it again after his match winner at View. Best kicker in the GPS this season. Joeys did well to restrain themselves from invading the pitch on mass. Day was chaired from the field. Newington players were good sports and were able to congratulate the Joeys boys. Frantic game.

In fact, it was a great day of rugby for Newington and Joeys. In the 13s and 14s New were winners with the 13As winning over a previously undefeated Joeys team, I believe about 28-7. The 14As took a convincing lead of 24-7 only to see a fantastic figthback by Joeys to close the gap to 24-19.

In the 15As which I didn't watch as it was at Enmore, Joeys belted New 54-0.It says something of this Joeys team as Newington had beaten every other GPS school for the last 3 weeks as well as a strong Trinity Grammar side.

The 16s I have written about

The first and second games were great display of come back rugby. With a New fight back to close a 0-19 gap to 14-19 in the seconds.

In the firsts I can understand why Joeys have 3 Australian Schoolboys, their backs keep them in the game and therefore their one point win over New.

My only concern is the state of the injury to the Joeys player in the 13A game. Some feedback would be appreciated, as it appeared to be a neck injury.

Heard the 13s player was okay with no serious injury.

Confirmed. He is ok.

Thanks Johnny come lately, with the ambulance there and the game called off, some very responsible people made some very intelligent decisions. In the 14A Game there was also a MayDay call. The smallest player on the field, A joeys boy, was buried underneath the a mass of players from both packs. He was OK also.

Was indeed a great game of rugby. Credit to both sides for a game played in fine spirit, with both teams leaving nothing out there. New with their forwards based game seemed to dominate large parts of the game, while the electric Joeys backline was able to pick off tries from nothing.

Joeys scored 5 of their tries down their left wing, which may leave the New 14 having cerise and blue nightmares for some time.

Amazingly, the New goal kicker knocked over 2 from the sideline, but missed one from right in front and another from beside the posts.

A game that either side could have won - best wishes to all of the boys who are in the middle of trials and approaching the HSC and good luck in rugby after school. Look forward to seeing the boys in Year 11 back next year.

Summary Joeys Rugby Season 2016

41 teams fielded
26 teams undefeated
81% of all games won
16's age group most successful with 84%

An unknown fact that there was a "champion rugby school" shield awarded firstly in 1922 to Joeys for best winning percentage. This trophy was discontinued in 1986 when NO other school had even won it. Shield sits in College archives and has not been on display for over 50 years.

I wouldn't think that anyone else is likely to win it in the current climate.

They're still the gold standard in terms of a school rugby programme (not withstanding the advantages of a large boarding cohort), and their on-field behaviour is beyond reproach.

Joeys Headmaster made mention tonight how proud he was that the school didn't run onto the field but showed respect for the opposition school and their grounds. Class act

wow ... did anyone make a tackle in the Newington v Joeys game?!

definitely a bit more entertaining than a Super rugby game!

much as I went to Stanmore to see Tyrone ... it is Helu that really has been the Newington star ... at least to my mind

if they kept stats, his stats would be off the charts

I gather he is related to the 2 English/Tongan internationals

so no doubt he will be destined for higher honours

As for the 2016 GPS season ... one of the best IMHO ... I think Shore were very unlucky, and their for and against doesn't do them justice

Joeys were a bit bizarre .... unlucky in the injury department, but un-joeys like in many ways

no doubt the catholics will be doing a post-mortem on their season, and will be back bigger and better in 2017

Oh well, given how close the 16As comp was ... I think 2017 will be another awesome comp, and surely 2017 has got to be Joeys year?!

And forgot to note ... Not sure when a team last won a gps premiership with such a narrow for and against

Scots almost had more points scored against them, than they scored

231 points for .... 217 against

If memory serves me correct around that 2013-14 timeframe it was 400+ points that secured the title

Only one team scored less points that scots ... Namely shore

And scots didn't have the best defensive record

So I think even scots would concede that they had some luck go their way in 2016

3rd XV's comp
Grammar 1's 12 - High 1's 7very close, highly contested game, both sides were denied a try each, unlucky i guess

Regrettably, from a schoolboy rugby perspective Joeys has no peer rival in terms of either quantity and quality of their teams. Shore under the late Jika Travers came close. But these days soccer has ripped the guts out of rugby numbers.

Indeed, the for and against in the 1st XV competition was the most even for a long while.

Scots + 14
Kings + 59
Riverview + 54
Newington + 6
Joeys + 20
Shore -153

5 out of 6 with a positive F/A - rare in any competition I'd have thought. Looks like Kings and View won big but lost the close ones, which hurt them both. New and Joeys both lost a couple more of the close ones than they won.

Usually the 2nds competition has the close F/A, but not this year.

Scots + 255
Riverview + 90
Kings + 3

All the rest in the negative.

Closer than many would have thought given how each have gone in other matches. Good to see High finish with a competitive match.

The only saving grace for rugby is that even though numbers are strong for soccer, the standard of the competition is nothing like the rugby. That comes to me from soccer parents - the say that their club matches are much harder and a much higher standard.
