Really? Cranbrook gave Waverley a bit of a towelling last week and are up against Shore tomorrow.

Riverview has done a job on Eddies in the first half. 30+/0 at half time and seems as if view has switched off in second and let Eddies score 2 opportunist tries to their 1. Inside and winger playing well for Eddies but that's about it. Can't match it with the Riverview pack. Stronger team than Marist though.

Scots won the rugby 7"s today defeating Brisbane high in the final 17-14....... Angus Crichton top tournament try scorer with 8 tries fantastic running rugby scots won all their games and some if the new names shone along with last years returning players looking very good side in 2014 ....... Newington struggling against Knox I hear. Knox up by 30 plus in 2nd half.

Newington were terrible, yes it was the first game and they had not that many first XV playing, but it was just not good enough. Knox much sharper and consistent.But typically the refereeing in the firsts was disgrace it was embarassing (the rest of the games were fine)

The thirds was the most enjoyable game good to see some New backs tackling.

Riverview vs Eddies was not much of a game, Eddies were a very poor side and View looked average for a side only missing 1 key player in Hutchinson. It must be said that Views hooker Evan Prichard was simply amazing, definitely one to watch for this season. Newington smashed by Knox is big, hearing that New was only missing 3 players in Kennewell, Sepasa and Bennent ? From what I saw last week Knoxs pack was very strong so I assume that's where they won the game. Also heard that Shore won after the bell vs Cranbrook and were at full strength, although many consider Cranbrook to be a fairly strong side in the CAS. Interesting weekends footy indeed

their pack was good and although given plenty of assistance matched a 2nd/3rd string New pack. But it was the Knox backs that made New look ordinary

The only other Sydney school playing was Westfield Sports High. I stayed the whole day and thoroughly enjoyed it. I took a friend who had never seen rugby played; she was converted.

The crowd favourites were the PNG Boys from Ok Tedi playing as OTML School Boys. They played tough, open rugby that was fun to watch. Scots were impressive, large and fast. Brisbane State High is a strong rugby school, but could not hold Scots.

As you might expect, there was a big gap between the top and bottom in size and, to a lesser degree, skill. The advantage of the tournament sevens format is that it allows weaker teams to still play and pick up awards.

Interesting to watch NZ Palmerston North High School play. They were very skilled. The advantage that NZ clearly has is that rugby is a mass winter school sport. PNHS might not be able to beat the top of Australian School rugby, but there are a lot of PNHS's!

Looking at TAS, the reason I went, the results indicate that TAS should again be a force in the thirds. However, the gap between Scots and TAS was considerable.

Reigning GPS (NSW) premiers, The Scots College has been invited to participate in the prestigious St John's College Easter Rugby Festival in Johannesburg, South Africa. The festival, now in it's 19th year, is one of the most prestigious of the Festivals held over the Easter Weekend.

Scots is drawn to play Pretoria Boys High, St John's College (JHB) and Jeppe Boys High.

Schools' rugby in the Republic starts midway through Term One and as such, Scots' will face opponents that are already 'battle hardened'. In contrast, for Scots, the event fall 'out of season' as the AAGPS winter sports program does not start until Term 3. Nonetheless, one would expect the GPS champions to hold their own.

Pretoria Boys High will likely be the sternest test for the Aussies.

Schools Rugby Tribune had PBHS ranked at 17th on the 2013 national ranking.
Hosts St John's has two tough opening matches, in Nelspruit High, followed by Scots College.

Scots' third and final match is against Jeppe Boys High (JHB). Jeppe had a very good 1st XV in 2013 (ranked 18th, although par is around 35) and if they are of similar standard this year, could also provide the Aussies with strong opposition.

With Australian schools being somewhat of an unknown quantity to most South Africans, the organisers declined to match the Aussies against any of the three big guns at the Festival, i.e. Waterkloof High, Nelspruit High and Paarl Boys High.

The squad departs for South Africa on the 9th April and returns on the 21st April.

The team will have two warm-up games prior to the St John's festival.

I went down to watch the Riverview v Eddies game on Saturday, and agree in some parts of your assessment. The second half was pretty ordinary from Riverview but it appeared mostly due to fitness. My contacts there tell me they have started their program much later this year so it makes sense if they are behind on that level. The positives were that Eddies gave them a very physical game which they needed. Thanks to a flow of penalties to Eddies Riverview had to do a lot of defending, and Eddies only scored 2 second half tries completely against the run of play. While Riverview made a number of mistakes, they actually had 2 centres out, their fullback playing in the centres, and 2 wingers having their first run for the year. They were also rotating and experimenting with their pack. I gather Riverview aren't anywhere near where they want to be, but it's not a bad base when they aren't playing thst well, are still rotating players, and have put about 120 pts on 3 sides. I would say that Riverview can take a lot of positives from the game, and all credit to Eddies, they might have lacked the fire power of View, but they kept hitting hard, and never gave up.

1. Last year's firsts who are still at school
2. Last's year' 2nds, 3rds or 16As
3. Places better discussed in the thread which dare not speak its name

So then in 2013 Shore finished 4th in the 6 team seconds competition and 8th in the 10 team 3rds while New finished last in both

Fair statement although it is quite unfair to judge Newington this early, they have had only one trial game (even though they got thumped). I think its only fair to analyse them and Shore once we get closer to the GPS season.

I agree that the trial by itself is not a reliable indicator, but when you look at how their teams performed last year, it suggests that they will be weaker in 2014 than in 2013. How much weaker depends on a number of factors and the New coaching staff would deserve high accolades if they turned a group of players whose teams finished last in 2013 into a force in 2014.

I went and watched Shore and New in the last game of 2013 and all the games were even except for the 1sts which was a big win to New and the 4ths or 5ths which was a big win to Shore. Most of the other matches were a point or two in it, on that basis I'd expect both schools to be close to each other in 2014. I'd also expect the other 4 schools to be a bit stronger - Kings are my smokey

I know there's been quite a bit of talk regarding Grammar's lack of numbers in the lower age groups, but does anyone have any information regarding their First/Second XV's this year?
