When you are the new kid on the block its best not to shout too loud mate.some friendly advice. Your last comment show's your newness. Just trying to help :)

Thanks for the advice but it appears to be attack the new kid. Happy to play by the same rules as everyone else, but certainly will stand up to to bullies.

Anyway anyone have ideas how the younger A teams are shaping up. New are looking good (on paper) in the 16s and 14s. I know some of the kids lining up for Joeys 13a and they should be real strong.

I really dont need or want your advice - I certainly will respect the moderators and take their advice - I have already admitted I made the mistake of replying without reading forwarded on my original post.

I really dont see what it has to do with you anyway.

Now for the weekend some Newington teams are playing St Pats and some have internal trials - not sure what we will learn from that, the real test as to where they are at will be when they play Joey's the following week.

If any of you get the chance check out this kid Tyrone Taukamo in the Newington 16s he is 95kgs and runs the 100 in 12.3. He is not allowed to play opens yet as he is only 15 this year. I spoke to his dad Billy and he said he has not touched a weight yet.
Yeah but can he catch the ball and tackle!

Belated welcome aboard anonymous.

You seem to know your stuff.

Just be careful about making religious comments even if it's just a throwaway remark.

So he doesn't use his arms eh?
.

I'll stand corrected, he tackles (with arms) as hard as a bull kicking

PS very belated considering my first post was August 2013!

I assume from your authoritative tone you are a moderator .

It has been suggested that there may not be a GPS 3rd XV in 2014. Surely there is some tradition and history around there being three GPS rugby teams and there will still be a 3rd's?!? (The fixture list that I've seen (on the AAGPS website) suggests that the the 3rd XV will have two games in June.)

Gee whiz - the horse trading between selectors would mirror GPS cricket if they get down to 2 teams from (effectively) 6 - at the moment only half miss out - 2/3 would be unthinkable

I've heard that they will go to a GPS 6XV this year with the bottom three teams playing a corresponding Qld GPS team so that everyone feels happy and included.

Good. Better to bring in an under 85kg team instead.

GPS 1st's, really isn't that far away and I’m very interested as too what the selectors will be looking for in a forward pack.

1. Jack Bowditch (Riverview) would have had Vunipola Teaupa-Fifita (Newington) there but rumours are he’s injured but if he is fit then I’d slide Bowditch into second row
2. Evan Pritchard (Riverview) (left out Matt Serhon, because i believe the selectors last year picked a shocker and he was found out to be way out of his depth in the GPS Vs CAS game, i think there are better options than him)
3. Hosea Futukava (Riverview)
4. Koim Wingti (Joeys)
5. Toby Rudolph (Scots)
6. Jack Hayson (Riverview) anyone who watched last years Riverview’s 1st XV would of seen the workload this fella gets done in 70 minutes, making him be the recipient of the Player's Player award in 2013 for the view side, I hope the selectors reward him this year, if he plays like he did last year. /Jum Woodhill (Shore)
7. George Lehman (Kings)
8. Angus Crichton (Scots)
9. Harry Emery (Shore)
10. Connor O’shea (Joeys)/ Jack McGregor (Riverview)
11. Simon Kennewell (Newington)
12. James Kane (Kings)/ William McDonnell (Joeys)
13. Henry Hutchison (Riverview)
14. Guy Porter (Scots)
15. Bill Freeman (Riverview)

I like this team a lot. I think Pritchard deserves to be there but he will have a lot to prove in the coming weeks leading up to selection as he isn't as well known to selectors as other boys. Not quite sure about the full Riverview front row. I believe bowditch has size and a great footy iq but his work rate is not up to par. Like Bowditch, Hosea doesn't do much for me either. He is a big boy but in my opinion his work rate and attitude needs to be improved from last year . Due to his selection in Australia A, he will most definitely be picked for the side anyway. I am also not quite sure about Hayson's spot just because I believe Jum Woodhill is an excellent player and his role in the team would compliment the other forwards chosen. If you were to slot Woodhill in, the backrow would be a force to be reckoned with. The backs I am not really sure about as of yet and will have to wait and see how they perform in the first few weeks.

The AICES web site states that there will be no Under 18 AICES team this year.

If there is no AICES team, then the NSW Country Schools team, which is slated to play them, may be "redrawn" to play NSW CCC, leaving GPS 3rd XV with no opposition.

I know we wanted to cut out the aths chat but this is quite a nice little piece

This Alan Jones broadcast is amazing but I have started a thread for GPS Athletics in the "Everything else" forum and transferred the link there.

http://www.greenandgoldrugby.com/community/threads/gps-athletics.14221/

Listen to the broadcast there and comment about it there. All future comments about GPS athletics in 2014 or future years should be made there.

Cheers

I agree with the majority of this team but personally, I would replace Pritchard with D'silva - a new up and coming riverview player you ought to keep an eye out for. This bloke has been cheekly imported in recent years from a neighbouring town and has been involved in intense physical training to be the shock selection come GPS season in my view. Keep an eye out in the first round against Kings and see what D'silva can bring to the paddock.

Has Billy seen his son's Facebook account? My son assures me Tyrone's FB feed is full of photos of Tyrone holding dumbells etc. He is quite convincingly doing body building.

Having seen him play though IMO he does deserve the accolades he is getting.

I'm sure most of the parents on this forum are aware their sons are connected within the Sydney Junior rugby union community - schools and club - by FB, Instagram etc. ?

Please sent link to the page showing him in the weight room. The only person I could find on FB by that name is a singer song writer pretty sure that is not him.

I know he is not in the weight program at New and his father said he doesnt do weights so I'll go with that unless you can provide prove otherwise.

In the meantime I will watch him destroy opposition centres in the under 16s.

I think that he was a member or at least being screened in the NGS / NSW u18's squad earlier this year. They have a pretty intensive weights bias in that program, so I would assume he has at least had some real exposure to them. Given his age it was probably modified to be more core orientated. Good luck to him, he's obviously an up and coming star to keep an eye on.

The Newington Rugby model seems to be based around big physically intimidating centres, and I refer to their use of Roods, Vaingolo, Latinopoulu, Milne, and Moeroa in recent years.

Have we lost the art of, or are we in the process of losing the art of, developing silky smooth runners and ball distributing centres?

What has become of the big physically intimidating Newington centre graduates?
Not too many of these have gone on in rugby. Many of them lose their previous physical advantage several years after school.
Roods - lots of injuries.
Apo - going OK at Hobbits 1st Grade.
Vaingolo - #8 at Beasts after a stint in West-Tigerland, and off to France soon. (still physically imposing)
M&M - mungoball.

With the ARU appearing to pin all their junior development hopes on the AAGPS and Brissie GPS system, it is not a good sign that the schools appear to be focused on playing winning rugby at whatever cost, not necessarily developing players for long term careers as professional rugby athletes.
