they also lost to grammr a couple of years ago or thereabouts so I don't rate them against scots at all

From my understanding the 1sts was closer than the scoreline shows (there were a couple of quick tries from Riverview that the Shore team should have stopped), and the 2nds game was painstakingly close.

The team, whilst not the biggest or most physical, has plenty of experience and many good players (this age group has been decently strong throughout its time at school). I believe that if they condition themselves well pre-season and have their confidence up, they could be a very strong side this season.

View won seconds not losing a game and only having 37 points scored against them-Newington 2nd winning 5 games.

Interesting. Were the 2nds at View mostly year 11? If so, they would have to be pretty formidable again this year.

What about 16A's?

It was mentioned a couple of times in the U16s thread from last year that Kings 16As went through their season undefeated including trial matches and games against touring sides. As I undersatnd it they won 14-15 games on the trot including away wins in the GPS comp games against Joeys, Scots, New and also had big wins at home over Grammar (95-0), Shore (25+-0) and View.

From what I've read, about 14 of them went on Kings end of year rugby tour to England and Europe out of a squad of 28 - that's a big number which confirms the lack of depth in the year above them (as evidenced by their open results last year when their firsts finished 5th and their seconds finished 6th) and suggests that quite a few of them (7-9 possibly) will more than likely be in their first XV this year - from recollection their 16As team from last year has 5 boys in the NGS and 2 in the JGS

Thanks CTPE, sounds like a team of real talent coming through for Kings. Sounds like its going to be a cracking comp in 2012. Who are you tipping to win it?

That certainly is an impressive run of wins, although I'm not sure that we would have seen the same results if other teams had their stronger 16's playing. I believe the Joey's V Kings 16 A's game was quite close despite Joey's playing without at least 6 quality players who were all playing opens. It's a massive step up for these young Kings boys this year, it will be interesting to see how well they do. I'm not writing them off but you would have to say 2013 looks more likely to be the year for this Kings team.

Totally agree with you DD.

As I've expressed on this and a couple of other threads, a number of teams will benefit from playing their U16s in the Opens last year particularly Joeys, that's why I consider them favourites despite not having as good a draw as View. Kings on the other hand may suffer from the fact that their "red hot" 16As are all playing Opens rugby for the first time. That said the 16As likely to play in the firsts all have excellent rep and ARU development program pedigrees and from what I've seen of them at that level they all have the toughness and perseverence essential to do well at Opens level.

Kings will have some excellent talent in their backs with Davis,Tulloch, Foketi and Jones - all NGS players. It will be interesting to see where they are placed - looking at their potential team lists on this thread it seems like they have only 5 players coming back from last years firsts? - Moylan and Randell in the forwards and Wyllie, Foketi & Tourish in the backs. Who do they play at fullback? Tourish (JGS & incumbent no 15) or Jones (NGS and NSW U16)?. No 10 is also going to be interesting as they have Wyllie as the incumbent from last year up against Tulloch (NGS) who is one of the finest no 10s of any age group in NSW..and he and Davis at 9 were absolutely devastating for their 16As last year.

The backs will of course be going nowhere unless their forwards can deliver but the same conundrum will apply there with Randell the incumbent no 7 v McCalman (NGS & NSW U16). One of them probably has to be content at 6. Then there's Moylan (JGS) last year's no 8 v Stacey (JGS) although I think Stacey has a better physique for 4 or 5. Matson (NGS) probably walks into one of the second row spots. Front row is probably going to crucial for them as they have no one from last years firsts backing up and I think (looking at last years programs) only one prop in Strahan from the seconds. Their 16As though easily had the most dominant scrum in that age group and have had since U13s with Bateman (JGS) and Jin having played 1 and 3 together for a number of years.

I tend to agree with you however DD that although 2012 will be better for Kings than last year 2013 may be a more likely premiership year for them.

So how many did they have back from 2011 in total?

Obviously you know a lot more than I do here but having many back from an average team last year shouldn't necessary make them favourites. New from 2010 had a ton of talent back from a truely great team and in 2011 and they disappointed...

How many Scots and View have back from last year?

I see what you mean. 10 players back is significant but they didn't exactly set the world on fire last year.

View Versus Joeys in week 1 will be a blockbuster.
View have a ridiculously good draw. If they beat Joey's in week 1 they play every other solid team at home for the season. Hopefully they can, I have 10 year reunion for the Joeys/View game this year which makes me extra biased.

Any chance Newington might move Alex Vlahos into the backrow this season ?
Have seen him play League there and he's a big lump of a lad ... just a thought.
