Joeys weren't lucky. Either team could've won. Joeys had it in the forwards (don't know about joeys, but scots pack had 7 yr11/10 boys) and when scots got clean ball in the backs joeys had no answer. Not an excuse but 20-5 penalty count to joeys didn't help. Joeys were masters of the AB's method of "sealing" off the ball. Scots boys weren't blameless, but a bit of consistency from ref would've made for a fairer game.

Puts Auggies win over Scots in perspective - on today's form they would've put quite a few on joeys also.

Joeys 17 Scots 12

Neither side will be over the moon with their performance but it was a typical trial game of rustiness and fitting in with new players. It was not without some excitement and good play but, trial or not, I have seen a lot of them and both teams will have to step up if they are going to get the bikkies this year.

Joeys scored 3 tries to 2 but there wasn't much in it.

According to senior boys from both schools: Scots had a young team with 7 in Yr. 11 and 1 in Yr. 10 and Joeys had 5 in Yr. 11.

Joeys strength was in the pick and drive of its forwards, whose scrum was strong also. Scots had to infringe near their goal line when Joeys was doing this to keep them out. Since it was a trial Joeys didn't kick for goal a couple of times when this happened but went for the try and once they succeeded.

Scot's' strength was in their backs. With the Joeys backs caught short a few times and not being able to mark their man well accordingly, they had trouble on the flanks especially on their left hand side where Scots 14. Dylan Holmes had several long runs. He was always dangerous.

The try of the day started near the Scots' goal line and a Scots player applied several strong fends to Joey's would be tacklers to go up to near the Joeys goal line from where a try was scored. I thought I saw the number 11 on the player's jersey (Rayner) but it was on the right flank so it might have been Holmes. (Anybody know who made the run?)

What a try. Even the Joeys' faithful gave it a big hand.

The play of the flyhalves: Joeys 10. Deegan (NSW Schools U/16) and Scots 10. Horwitz (Oz Schools v England) was first class. I'll warrant that these lads will give their backs good service this year. Horwitz will be favoured to get GPS and NSW honours in 2012 but don't write off Deegan who is still in Yr.11. He looks more robust this year, which is just as well.

For Scots I was looking forward to see another Oz Schools player, 12. Stewart have a strong game but he was closely marked as you would expect. He went off injured in the 2nd half.

Scots 15. Kellaway (NSW Schools Twos) had a few long runs and looked like a young Matt Burke, who had many a stirring performance at the same Hunters Hill ground. He looks more settled in the fullback role in 2012 positionally, not that this was tested a lot by the Joeys backs. He is still in Yr.11; so watch this classy player.

Both no.8s Goldie (Joeys) with good rugby skills and Murray (Scots) with controlled aggression had fine games for their schools.

Scots will be well served this year if they get their forwards working together better as the Joeys pack did, and they improve their scrum and the handling of the backs: some of the passing in the 1st half stopped their progress up the field. They will also have to improve their discipline: they were penalised repeatedly defending their line and trying to stop Joeys pick and go anywhere on the field. They were lucky to keep all their players on the park. Very lucky.

Joeys sucked a lot of defenders in with their pick and drive near the Scots goal line but only once did they take advantage and whip the ball wide for a try after doing so. They have to do that more and also improve their lineout throwing, and kicking for the line and posts. Their backs did not penetrate much either.

Twos: Joeys 17-14 - after being down 14-0 with about 15 minutes to go.
16As: Joeys 27-5
15As: Joeys 37-7

Harvey,
Grammar have won more premierships and produced more Wallabies than 'View - its a marathon not a sprint

Agree Shoulder... although you must admit it's unusual to see a marathon runner pull off the road at the 35km mark, unroll a sleeping bag and take a hefty kip under the Gatorade table.

Whilst Joeys have a very fine tradition of "take no prisoners rugby" in their forward play a 20-5 penalty count is a huge leg up and undoubtedly would have denied Scots forwards any momentum. But then again some things never change when playing Joeys at Hunters Hill.

High look like they may even struggle with their firsts team playing against GPS 3rds during the GPS rounds....beaten yesterday by Stannies 55-0 (Stannies beaten last week by Kings 58-0)

Whilst these are only trial games, from a depth perspective noticed in today's paper that in the 2nds Joeys just edged out Scots 17-14 and Kings had a 23-8 win over New. Expected that Joeys traditional depth would have seen a much bigger win and suspect that Newington may have problems in their firsts if they encounter a few injuries.

CTPE,
I know, i am not ignorant of that fact, and yes 'officially' Manu is not a selector! I could not agree with you more in this respect!

Nevertheless Manu has influence, emphatically so, and to suggest otherwise is to deny the obvious. This aspect was very apparent at last year's NSW Schools trials!

Regards,
Newbie

I doubt that the non-inclusion of Moeroa, Milne and Lussick in the NGS/JGS squads will be of any importance in NSW Schools selections. I expect that NSW Schools selectors will be looking to pick their best teams on form in their quest of beating Qld and the three aforementioned players will be in the mix if their form warrants it. Australian Schoolboys selection may be another thing though given the ARU's input at that level. I can certainly understand any reluctance at that level to choose players who have clearly indicated that their post school future lays with League to the detriment of players of equal ability who see their future in Rugby.

Agree entirely.

Surely riverview have to be outright favourites now in both 1's and 2's with the firsts dominating a good St Pat's side 72-5 and the seconds winning 47-0 with only 14 players after second rower getting sent off first tackle of game. I was at that game and can i commend the riverview crowd for the respect they showed for the injured st Pat's boy.

View seem to have some depth...and the game against St Pats was their first official trial.

Will no doubt be an interesting contest when they host Joeys in next Saturday's trial.

In regards CTPE, at what stage do you think any of the penalties given today were unwarranted?
The SJC scrum totally dominated and as mentioned previously, there could have been cards shown for repeated infringements. The left side of the SJC scrum was
devestating taking more than one tight head l recall

Not having been there I can't possibly comment on whether the penalties were warranted or not...but a 20-5 penalty count is terribly lopsided in any game....and having watched too many GPS games at Joeys over the years it seems that Joeys do very well at Hunters Hill when it comes to lopsided penalty counts.

when you're limited to a 1.5m push how dominant can a scrum be?

so you weren't there? doesn't seem fair that you can claim the ref was bias simply based on a statistic.. i'd also like to point out the penalty count against oakhill was similar in oakhills favour, that game was at hunters hill as well, so i dont know about your theory there.

Any word on when and where this weekend's battle of the Catholics will be played? I'm assuming it's at View for this game and then at Joeys Round 1?

Will the annoyance of the 12:15 fixture be a feature again this weekend? Can any current View boys enlighten us?
