Well, there you go: a slight scare for the boys and the Kings insurance underwriters. I didn't see the fence go: just watched the boys rush down and the players rush over; then I scooted off.

Talking of insurance matters: it's convenient to park near the crowd on the hill, but on the playing side of the road (eastern side) cars can be parked on the verge facing downhill. I turned my car around so I could drive out after the game, lickety split, but I made sure that I put a couple of rocks behind the tyres. If some of the other cars had faulty parking brakes the cars could clean up a few folks watching the game

There should be no parking on that verge area and they should have a marshal there to see that it doesn't happen. It's probably not an official spot to park but folks like me park there all the same. Think I'd better call the school on Monday.

Did Cameron Bond play? I heard he sustained some sort of injury/illness that meant the end of his season, wasn't sure if it was true or not.

Lee Thanks for the great coverage on the Kings / Joeys match up.

I joined a number of Shore boys on their bye weekend with the intention of having a close look at Kings and Joeys in full flight following both sides giving us a touch up back in May.

We arrived just in time for the 2nds kick off and were pretty impressed with the high standard of rugby from both sides with Joey’s defence holding out a spirited Kings side. A quick scan of the Kings 2nd XV confirmed they were the real deal with all the sponsored imports lying in the 1ST XV. The Joey boys were a pretty well drilled unit and the tussle was worth watching whilst in the queue at the canteen.

A quick view of the program confirmed that from our last game that Kings were at full strength bar Ed Wylie and Joeys at little under strength without Bond and Tegart who both gave us a difficult afternoon in the trial.

So the main event saw us checking off the Aus School boy selections with 7 of the 8 on display and we managed to grab a bit of grass on the hill right next to the Joeys army.
The quick try to Kings was no surprise and we chuckled that for once the cerise and blue boys would be silenced.

Then bang someone opened the cage door and set the animals free, was that Killingworth being sat on his back side and where was Connor? Was he on the pitch? The Joey boys were absolutely giving it too them with Rocky Dicembre, Williams and Deans playing like men possessed and Hulme doing an Adam Ashley Copper impersonation of physical winger play. Was that the same kid who was running around in 2’s in the trials?

The half time break came and we were having a bit of a laugh at the invisible representative men, finally someone was exposing their weakness, the Joeys forwards were smacking them and with the except of Millar and Killingworth the Kings boys had nothing to offer.

There was a bit of banter about that Kings were a bit dusty and it was only a matter of time then someone, looked like Bond jumped the fence and delivered a Russell Crowe like inspirational speech to the Joeys troops next to us. Something out of Gladiator I think
“At my signal unleash Hell”. Anyway whatever the kid said lifted the boys into song and we knew that Kings were in for another 35 minutes of bruising.

Certainly Kings lifted but the Joey boys all put their bodies on the line including some great defence from the indigenous boys. The referee had a reasonable game and didn’t mind giving the odd penalty to both sides in kicking distance for break down infringements. The tussle continued and the Joeys boys rallied to their chants whilst the non Aus reps of McCormack and Curtis tried hard to salvage the game.

And so the final whistle with the dreams of a 2010 championship and a number of rep player’s reputations in absolute tatters for Kings, for Joeys more singing, this time in Latin I believe and we walked out with our homework complete and a valuable lesson in the virtues of self belief.

Northern son. Great game report. Yes, the inspired speech maker was Bond. And the Latin song is a joeys standard that only gets sung after great occasions where they overcome the odds. Inspiring stuff

Speaking of singing, I find it perplexing that the Joe boys sing 'Jerusalem' on ocassions. A Marist brothers school singing THE ANTHEM of Protestant England? The brothers that taught me and my mates would be turning in their graves......

How would you rate Shore's form in the few comp games they have played? Hopefully for your blokes they would have stepped up from the trial game with Joeys when they looked a bit ordinary - especially their ball work - though that flaw is commonplace in trial games, isn't it?

It's a pity that Joeys can't use those two boys but it must be devastating for the lads themselves. I know the details and they are grievous.

At least Le Lievre is a worthy replacement at fullback. He was playing well for the Twos before Tegart had to call it quits, and has stepped up as though to the manor born. His chance this year will stand him in good stead for 2011.

Great Report.,

I couldn't make the game but heard it was a cracka and extremely physical. Two details that I heard from a mate were:
i. Hulme scored a fantastic try from the left wing
ii. The Joeys crowd were so happy after the win that they flowed over the boundary fence from the hill and broke down a section of the fence.

Can't blame them after an upset and form reversal like that. Well done Joeys!

About the broken fence, I honestly did not expect Joeys of all people to do something like that. I always thought they were the most gracious when it came to rugby. This seems more like a View thing, seeing as the entire school tends to rush the field when they win and begin lifting up the players and crowd surfing them.

Speaking of View they beat Grammar 48-14.

Scots beat Joeys in Round 1 33-17. View beat Scots in round 2 35-19. In the trials Kings beat Joeys by more than 30 points, and only beat View 15-13.

Today Joeys beat Kings with a penalty goal in the final minutes of the game to win by a mere 1 point. I wouldn't use this as a basis for the future GPS rounds.

Also Lee, in your report you state 'the Kings goal kicker left a few points on the park.' Wylie is the usual goalkicker for Kings, and was out injured today. Do you think this suggests that if Wylie had played, Kings would have won?

what about cam bond and hayden teggart aswell as dillon walfod coming off, injuries are partof the game.

Talking of school songs or chants I always regretted that Joeys dropped the one that was to the tune of "I like Aeroplane Jelly" and used the words: "I like SJC footie ..." It was my favourite.

Of course the young blokes on this forum probably don't know the tune which was from a radio ad.

Newington to beat Grammar, however Grammar will cause a significant amount of trouble for Newington
The wild card will be Kings vs View. Will no doubt be the match of the round. Kings will be looking to make amends for their loss to Joeys, Riverview will be looking to make amends for the earlier season loss in the trials (it was by only 2 points!)
Joeys to spend the weekend training with high hopes for the future after a hard fought and well earned win over the favourites.

Not even gonna try and guess the winner or the scor for Kings vs View, not after Saturday.

I think it is a shame that GPS sit around with one team having a bye every week and such a short season proper. Just when Joeys have a head of steam up they sit it our for week, must be very frustrating. About time to get with the times and open it up to the best of CAS and ISA

Is it correct that Joeys beat Kings in 1sts 2nds and 3rds on the weekend? If that is the case what does that say about the overall rugby program at Kings who I understand have been quite aggressive in recent years in inviting boys who show some rugby abilty into their school? Well done Joeys.
