Hi there Rob, great to see you again.
Here is the match report (Courtesy of the
Catholic Press) of the 1925 game v St Josephs in which J.F Linton would have played in
S.J.C. v . Church of England Grammar School
The fifth round of the GPS football competition found SJC playing Shore at Northbridge. From the outset Shore adopted spoiling tactics, standing close up to the College backs to prevent their moving. With Shore breakaways coming fast around the scrum, SJC found it difficult to get their back-line machinery to work. Although College were having the better of the game in the opening session, no points were coming. Cullen kicked to Shore backs, who kicked through to White and followed fast. The bounce beating the SJC full-back, Booth gathered and scored for Shore. College forwards took the ball along to Shore territory, where Finlayson picked up in the loose and passed to 0 'Connor, who scored. Cullen converted. SJC, 5-3.
Shore soon scored again in exactly the same manner as before, and led 6 to 5 at the interval. From the kick off in the second half SJC started a great passing movement, in which the ball was handled by seven or eight players. With the line at his mercy Ovens was off-side for the final pass. Keeping up the pressure, SJC were 'soon rewarded, for from a ruck, Alsaker wriggled his way over. The kick failed. S.J.C 8-6.
SJC attacked, but twice the ball was kicked dead. Shore replied with a vigorous offensive, which ended in MacKellar scoring a good try. Shore again took the lead , 9-8. A vimful rush by the Cerise and Blue vanguard was held up on the Shore line. After a series of scrums, Bryson fought his way over. SJC, 11-9. A scrum near the touch line at half-way gave the ball to Alsaker. By quick, short passes the leather went along the line to Carlton who received in front of the goal with the defence coming across at him. He made straight for the corner, and his pace just carried him over. SJC, 14-9.
Shore essayed a passing rush, and the ball went across to the winger, whose inside pass went astray. The inside centre ever- ready Smith snapped it up, side-stepped Shore's centre, drew the full-back and sent Carlton on to score between the posts. Cullen goaled.
The final whistle sounded with St. Joseph's College victors in a hard-fought battle by 19-9.
