PREVIEW: Riverview vs Joeys
Leichardt Oval is the neutral venue for the highly anticipated ‘Battle of the Catholics’ when Riverview ‘host’ Joeys.
This week Joeys have made some key changes to address the issues that beset them last week. In attack, the short passing game from their forwards was inaccurate, with high passes forcing ball carriers into contact too high – resulting in slow ball or turnovers. Compounding this, the backline then played too deep and moved laterally without threatening the line in the midfield. In defence, there was an unusual lack of energy and communication 1-2 passes from the ruck that led to line break opportunities, which the Newington No.10 accepted gratefully.
Ben Playford and Hunter Fogarty get their chance to shine together after excelling as a 2nd XV 10/12 combination across the past 2 seasons. With this change, and the return of the Energizer Bunny in Pat Young in the 7 jersey, this week’s team now has 5 forwards and 5 backs who came through the successful U13-16 A’s age group teams together – a familiarity in combinations which Riverview has also pieced together very well this year.
View will stick to the methods that has served them well in recent weeks. Competent set piece, a disciplined defensive system to shut down quick ball, and a patient attack that moves the ball from the point of contact. In number 7 (Benji Noble) they have an indefatigable breakdown nuisance, with No. 10 (Joe Dillon) making excellent decisions in his run-pass-kick options. With No.13 Liam Grover linking with his speed merchants in the back three, it is the accuracy and discipline of Riverview (and fitness to do it) that makes them difficult to beat. At the end of the day, ‘View are playing the style AND accuracy which Joeys themselves are seeking to play.
These Marist v Jesuits clashes rarely operate to the pre-game script. It is that fact which will make favourites Riverview nervous, and Joeys believe they have the ability and fitness to disrupt View in the forwards and beat them at their own game.
