In what I think is a nice touch I understand that RIverview have agreed to broadcast, via Cluch (fingers crossed), ALL of the games being played on their First Field on Saturday from 9am. It would be great if all the schools did that and, as far as possible, put their Year 12 sides on their No 1 fields so that the parents and families of those boys who are about to leave the school will get to actually see them play, even if not in person. That would be a marvellous thing, especially for those parents from the bush, who may not get to the city at all this year to see this cohort play sport. With only two rounds to go, that shouldn’t be a difficult thing to achieve. Credit to Riverview.

In an interesting matchup in the lower Opens teams, Joeys 5ths have been drawn to play Riverview 7ths on No 1 at View because the Joeys 7ths (who have beaten the 5ths and 6ths) are playing Sydney High’s 2nds on Joeys No 1.

Yes, yes, I know. You have all been waiting patiently for the ramblings of a an old man about schoolboy rugby, all described through a prism of food, faith and tomfoolery. Here we go for another round.

Newington v Kings
If it wasn't for the Methodists Wookies in 1870 taking on the Anglican Cattlemen we would not be here right now. The occasion this weekend really needs more than it deserves. Speaking to an insider at Stanmore in 2019, he divulged the program for tomorrow. There were going to be exhibition game played in old uniforms and under former rules. (rucking!!!) Special guests from across the land and South Pacific with even a touch of royalty. Kings would of course supplied the grandeur in the car park (just before the local Stanmore Street rats stole their car badges). Now we are left with a wind swept Johnson oval, with local magpies, crows and KFC wrappers floating in the air above. There will be the unusual silence of no airplanes flying overhead, so close you could read the menu. It will be a quiet occasion. For this game, math, science and Cattle size all scream a Kings win. But I do hope that somewhere deep within the Wyvern Dragon, a small spark will emerge and catch fire. If there was one game, just one game Newington would want, more than anything to win, it is this one. My head says Kings, BUT deep down I would like Newington for once to be the dragon that defeats the dragon slayer. Kings by a 12 quiches.

Scots v Shore
Well, well, well, how the mighty have fallen. Here we see one former super power now living in the well of despair. How is the view down there lads? But really. Scots will win this game, they will win it easily. The only key to Shore's success will be to keep it tight. Shore have a well drilled game when they are close to the try-line. They did this in the 2nds and 1st XV game against Joeys. Problem was that they were carved up easily in the centres just like a baby lamb joint slow roasted in a wood oven for four hours. The Shoremen of course will regather-and try again. Scots have had a shocking run, with other teams exposing the weaknesses in the Death star. From my lounge, Scots have had an issue stopping the quicker ball movement among opposition forwards. Joeys have developed this game well. When you expect the lumbering prop to simply hit and drop, you can set you defense, but when the prop has the ball in two hands (and not under his elbow) and can pop pass to another running forward, you tend to hesitate. Scots are prone to be caught out as easy like a Gucci handbag on sale. This week though with players returned (and the scolding words of Lord Lambert in their ears) they shall take all of their frustration out on the smaller Shoremen. Scots by 50.

The parents of Riverview boys received an email from the Principal this afternoon letting us know there will be a minute silence before the commencement of each rugby game at 'View to honor the memory of one of our year 9 boarders who tragically passed away last Saturday (cardiac arrest on his parent's yacht). He was an avid rugby fan and participant, his initial's and jersey # 2 are on 1st Field, incase people watching clutch are wondering what its all about.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Very interesting indeed. I assume Riverview 6ths are playing Joeys 6ths?
The Joeys side of the schedule doesn’t say which Riverview team the Joeys 6ths are playing but if the game is at 11am on First Field then Yes it will be 6ths v 6ths. I’m told they are a good side. Coached by Miles Newman, so will be Year 11 and hungry to impress for next season.

Correct, Mr Newman (SJC class of 87) and coach of eight 2nd XV premierships has a good side. They are playing View 6ths.

For those who do not know, Joeys opens work this way.

1st-4th XV are selected on talent. If you are good enough, then you will play there.
The 5ths, 7ths, 9ths, 11th and 13ths are year 12 boys
The 6ths, 8ths, 10ths and 12ths are Year 11 boys
The Joeys 7ths have some talented (if not well motivated) players who should be playing higher.
When Joeys 6ths and 7ths played, they scored three tries each, with kicking being the difference.

Ah. The joeys boys must be getting lazy. Those posters have been used before.
Perhaps the laziness of the “poster squad” will foreshadow the performance of the Joeys 1st XV. Only time will tell I suppose.

I agree, they are old, BUT they still did the individual ones. I didn't post those up.
My son (15A's) is pumped for tomorrow. Whole school is in fact. Joeys 1st XV are back to full strength.
There were three rested it seems last weekend.

I’ve been informed that the match up of the day (apart from the 1sts) is going to be the 4th XV battle. Both teams undefeated and will be “ready to take some heads off” as my nephew has messaged me, so if you are looking for a bit of entertainment at midday tomorrow it should be a ripper. I’ll be taking an hour away from the races to watch.
BP.

Looking forward to seeing the Riverview vs Grammar match in the 3rds tomorrow, should be a cracker (on screen). Haven't seen Grammar this year, but know they are a strong team, hopefully the Royal blue and white can overcome the black and yellow (gold?).

Well Joeys 4ths beat View 3rds easily in the trials.
View 4th beat Joeys 5ths.

I was also informed that view 4ths beat view 3rds in internal trials early in the season.
Both teams have been fluid, I don’t think that would happen now. View 3rds have a few boys who have played some 1st this year at some stage and for some misadventure or injury have landed there.

Apparently there is 4 U16 players in the thirds tomorrow. All of which I’m told played Gen Blue U15s last year. A pity the school doesn’t have them play U16s if they are not in 1st or 2nds. Would make a great 16As game.

3rd XV Competition - Round 6

With three rounds to play (including the deferred Round 3), Grammar and Joeys remain undefeated.

Last week's results:

Joeys 76 d Shore 0
Riverview 26 d High 20
Scots 17 d Kings 12
Grammar had a bye

This week's games:

Scots v Shore @ Bellevue Hill
Grammar v Riverview @ Rushcutters Bay
Newington v Kings @ Stanmore
Joeys v High @ Hunters Hill

Scots should be too strong for Shore who offered very little resistance to Joeys last week.
Grammar & Riverview will be a great contest. I think Grammar will remain undefeated here but it will be close.
Newington come into the comp replacing TAS. The match against Kings is very hard to pick and could go either way.
Joeys are coming off a big win, but High tested Riverview last week and will be coming to Hunters Hill to do the same again. Nevertheless I am expecting Joeys to remain undefeated. I will be watching this one at 12:00 noon on Clutch.

Cheers
Its Not Pink

Hi INP. it's not quite true to say Newington replaced TAS in the 3rds comp. TAS had to pull out because none of the Sydney schools would travel to Armidale. TAS was prepared to travel to Sydney for the away games so they were scheduled as "friendly" away games. Then when increased covid 19 restrictions prevented TAS travelling, Newington stepped in to take the vacant spots. They don't count for points, but its nice to see Newington back. I want the full thirds comp back! Having returned to Armidale I suddenly find myself bereft of GPS rugby. :(

This year's comp is Joeys V Grammar. That should be a real matchup. I have no idea how TAS would have gone. While there is a local comp I don't understand how it works nor have I seen any matches because of ground restriction, making TAS a blank slate. As a long term supporter of the minnows I want Grammar to win.

Via clutz TV I have partly seen Grammar play one match. I say partly because there were technical problems. I don't know when Grammar and Joey's are playing. I would live to watch it. Could someone provide a link prior to the event?
