Agreed TME, beating Joeys is an achievement at the best of times and they are never easy. I am looking forward to seeing whos in and out of both teams for Saturday.

A brave prediction indeed BP.

View had a good win over Newington last Saturday that you accurately predicted, but you would have noted how quickly New put on three consecutive tries in the second half. View will need to avoid such defensive lapses this weekend and ensure that they get the ball to their experienced playmakers who can really cause some damage if given space.

Joeys will be looking to bring their first-half game from the Scots encounter that they fine-tuned in their 70 point defeat of Shore last week. This week will be significantly tougher.

It's also worth noting that the 2nd XV match puts the two undefeated sides against each other so that will be a great curtain raiser.

With Joeys having already defeated Riverview in the 3rd XV comp, the results will be the same as last year: Joeys, Joeys and Joeys.

It should be a great contest and I am only disappointed not to be able to watch it live, but I am preparing to sing Sub Tuum in my lounge room.

Games this week:

Scots v Shore at Bellevue Hill

Scots find themselves in the unfamiliar position of being winless after 2 games and facing the also winless Shore boys. After the hammering by Joeys last week, it's hard to see Shore winning this although I'm sure that they'll give it everything. Scots by 15-20.

Newington v Kings at Stanmore

This game marks the 150th anniversary of the first game of schoolboy rugby in Australia between Newington and Kings back in 1870 and was to be a huge day at Stanmore pre COVID. Now it will sadly be played in front of a few reserves from the 2nds and some staff from each school. The bright side being that Clutch will be streaming the match for many more viewers. Hopefully they can sort out the feed better this week so that the 1st XV game doesn't keep glitching over to the 1sts Volleyball every 2 minutes.

Kings have a good side and have been playing some very good rugby this year and it's hard to see anything but a defeat for the young Newington team. Kings by 20-25.

Riverview v Joeys at Lane Cove

Joeys visit the hostile turf of Riverview 1 on the back of wins over Scots and Shore, while Riverview have a loss to Kings and strong win over Newington. At the risk of incurring the wrath of the Jesuit hordes for two weeks in a row, I think that Joeys might have a little too much firepower for a very good Riverview team. Joeys by 10-15.

Can confirm I’ve spoken to Pope Frankie and he has confirmed there will be a divine intervention some time around 3:15 on Saturday on Riverview 1st field. It will favour the home team.

Predictions for the weekend

The Battle of the Catholics

Always great to see these two sides going hard at each other. RIverview have much to play for, if they knock Joeys down a peg (and then hope Joeys can knock off Kings 4 days later) there is an opportunity for Premiership glory. It’s a home game, tails are up after a good win over Newington and they will be supremely confident. From what I’ve seen in the two games on Cluch, Joeys’s have a very physical, skilful set of forwards and can hurt you from 1 to 8. The edge is to the Cerise up front. The backs of Joeys showed what they were capable of in one half against Scots and then most of the game against Shore. I think this game has the potential to be much more like the Kings game v RIverview than the game against Newington and when the pressure was put on them the backs lacked both a dominant individual or the combinations to do the damage. This is one of those games that could be either a blowout win to Cerise, if they remain fully focussed, or a close win to Cerise if they don’t. I predict Joeys will do what they need to do to win by 10 going away.

what I saw last week at Shore did not fill me with much hope at all. I expect Scots will be too big and too fast and will get their first win, comfortably, of the season. Shore will go at them all day but I’m struggling to see anything other than a Scots win by 30 to 40.


Newington V Kings

I was disappointed by the Newington performance last week against RIverview and had expected more from them particularly up front. I’m not sure whether that was an abheration or a true reflection of their ability - I guess we will find out this week. I’m expecting the Kings hordes to descend on Stanmore and lay waste to the place and ride off back to the West with the W, setting up a fantastic showdown next Wednesday at Hunters Hill.

With three rounds to play (including the deferred Round 3), Grammar and Joeys remain undefeated.

Last week's results:

Riverview 26 d High 20
Scots 17 d Kings 12
Grammar had a bye

This week's games:

Scots v Shore @ Bellevue Hill
Grammar v Riverview @ Rushcutters Bay
Newington v Kings @ Stanmore
Joeys v High @ Hunters Hill

Scots should be too strong for Shore who offered very little resistance to Joeys last week.
Grammar & Riverview will be a great contest. I think Grammar will remain undefeated here but it will be close.
Newington come into the comp replacing TAS. The match against Kings is very hard to pick and could go either way.
Joeys are coming off a big win, but High tested Riverview last week and will be coming to Hunters Hill to do the same again. Nevertheless I am expecting Joeys to remain undefeated. I will be watching this one at 12:00 noon on Clutch.

Thoughtful predictions Brumbies.

Here are a couple of mine;

Riverview vs Joeys; in a game that usually draws a huge crowd, arch rivals are facing off again, this time on View's 1st field. Riverview will need to focus for every minute of the game to overcome Joeys, but it is possible for the wide royal blue and white stripes to cause an upset on their home ground. My heart says View by 3, but my head says View by 5.

Scots vs Shore; Scots may not be as dominant as previous years, however they are still a strong side, they have had a tough draw for the first couple of games. They will come away with a win against the navy and white diagonal stripes this year. Look for some glimpses of great plays from the Shoremen, Scots will more than likely win by 21+

Newington vs Kings; great historical GPS game. I am with QH in that it is a bloody shame the crowd won't be able to physically attend this 150 year anniversary. New' will show strength and skill but it may not be enough to keep the Kings fellas out of their half for long, at all. This year Kings are on a role and are fully focused. Kings will probably win by more than 21 imho.
