No, the pairing of Cross and Carter does not inspire confidence but it is just a trial and Cross was always going to be a starting player in one of the two trials. But Turner was quite good at 13 the other night and I was looking forward to seeing him play there against better opposition. Maybe that will happen later in the game. I don't think that Horne will be fit to start in Rd.1. Turner got a pass mark at 13; so let's see how Cross goes.

I think they just have to see how it works, with Bracken Henry and Horne wounded, this is what is left.

Turner did look very comfortable and assured at 13 though

Turner is a confident and skilful player and I am sure could make a good fist of most backline positions. However lets not underestimate the value of having his undeniable speed and finishing ability on the wing. Ther are not many other wingers in Super Rugby who can match those abilities and If the Tahs continue the way they finished last year he will score a bucket load of tries as a winger and force Deans to make him Mitchells wing partner for the World Cup.
With Horne [when fit] and Cross who are both Wallaby outside centres together with Bracken Henry the Tahs are really well served in that area possibly more so than the other Aussie teams and IMO dont need to go searching for other options.

Thanks for that Lee, it is still weird to think that an Aus u20 rep might not get a Super contract. In england you are assured of an academy place and potential first team game time.

Thats it Apo from Newington, sort of forgot which school he went to, is he likely to get a run in the Super comp this year or is he a bit young.

Pretty excited about Ansbro but really sad to see maps leave, he is the soul of the team. We dont have anyone but bowden to play 12 next year so hopefully he doesn't get injured. Corbs has had three or four stormers in a row at Loosehead for us so its great to see him fulfill his potential.

With regards to Rohan i think i saw him listed as 14 for the match against the force but probably made a mistake. Any reason as to why he is in NSW I thought he went to BSHS.

Carter and Horne for the season. Occasionally Cross and BKH but I'd like to see horne tear up the super comp this year. I will be majorly pissed if he injures his hammy again, the guy deserves a run in the jersey

Yeah too young, he'll be in the mix in a couple of years however.

He, with a few other QLDers (Samo) played club rugby down in NSW for Southern Districts because of the club owner I think. So I assume he lives he now. As for his position he seems to be favoured as an outside back now. He played fullback for Souths in the club rugby GF.

To the Rebels? Possibly.

I think it's only a matter of years before we see some of the Shute Shield clubs evolve into "feeder clubs" for certain Super provinces, probably not officially but at least in practice.

No to the Force (wrong Blake I was talking about Phil Blake former Marlins coach)
Interestingly I understand that the Marlins are a defacto feeder club to the Brumbies,

It used to be Randwick, then some of the Brumbies blokes used to play for Southern Disctricts because Foreshaw was closest to Canberra.

Emirates Western Force Coach Richard Graham has added four new faces and made five positional changes to the run-on side for the club’s final trial match against the Waratahs in Nowra on Thursday evening.
One of the key moves will see young gun James O’Connor take the playmaker role at 10 with Willie Ripia rested after having his foot trampled in last Saturday’s win against the Barbarians. Coach Richard Graham said it was just a precaution to keep Ripia out as he took a view to the regular season kick-off in a week and a half.

“You might recall that James played a number of games at 10 early last season, this opportunity is another way of assisting his development,” Graham said.

“The more times he gets his hands on the ball, the more decisions he has to make under pressure I think the better it will be for his career in the long term.”

Other moves include Richard Brown resuming his No.8 duties while Ben McCalman moves to the second row to partner towering youngster Phoenix Battye. Matt Hodgson changes to the blindside flank while Jono Jenkins starts in the seven jersey.

Of the new faces it’s a welcome return to action for Cameron Shepherd who takes on the fullback responsibilities while Nick Cummins, who scored two tries for the Emirates Western Force ‘A’ side last weekend, starts on the wing in place of David Smith.

It will be an interesting clash in the 13 position as new Emirates Western Force recruit Rory Sidey starts against his former side and opposite Waratahs centre Ryan Cross who made the switch from Perth to Sydney in the off-season.

“The changes give me an opportunity to look at others but I also want to make places in the side as competitive as we possibly can going into the first game,” said Graham.

“We’re expecting a physical encounter, most of things that have come from their camp has been about increasing their size over pre-season and I think that is fairly noticeable.

“They played well off Berrick (Barnes) in their last trial and will probably be looking to do more of that this season than they did last. We’ll need to be aware of that and counter where necessary.”

10. James O’Connor

So glad Graham hasn't shoved him on the wing, 10 and 12 are where he is most dangerous.

I thought he played well at 10 last year much better than Harris and probably still better than Hill

Rob Horne starts long road back

* Bret Harris
* From: The Australian
* February 10, 2011 2:07PM

WALLABY outside centre Rob Horne will make his comeback for the Junior Waratahs against an Invitational XV in Nowra this afternoon.

Horne has recovered from an elbow injury which forced him to miss the Wallabies' tour of Hong Kong and Europe last November, but is yet to play.

He was not selected in the NSW Waratahs team to play the Western Force in a Super rugby trial in Nowra this evening.

But the Waratahs slotted him into their B team to give him some game-time before the opening match of the season against the Melbourne Rebels in Melbourne next Friday night.

:yay

What's the story with the Force 'A' side? I hope it isn't because they don't have enough fit players, which would be pretty disturbing with round 1 only a week away.

It's not a bad looking side but jeez they are going to rely on a number of key backs staying fit. A Fairbanks/Sidey combination in the centres is not good enough for Super Rugby.

Yeah Cameron Mitchell hasn't made his mark as a senior player. To be fair he missed most of his first year out of school with injury, then in 2010 he found his mate Bennetts had already established himself as 13 in front of him at Eastwood; so was mostly on the wing IIRR when he got a chance or two in the Ones - but there's no way he's a winger. Maybe some Woodies tragics have a bit more info.

In 2008 I thought he would be in a Super stable by this time. He (and Bennetts) got in the Oz U/20 squad last year but Bennetts had to go home with injury and Situati was preferred to to Mitchell as the 13.

Yeah qwerty is right: that player is Apo from New - brother of Sam Latunipulu the Randwick 7, who seems to have been overlooked by everybody. Sam plays a bit like Steffon Armitage in your Exiles team. [Not to the point but it's good news that your lot have recruited Ansbro for next year. He's not Mapusua but he's a cracking player. And Corbisiero has been called into the England squad !!]

Apo is in the Tahs amateur academy and will be a pro player one day but he has to learn to use other players more - not an uncommon flaw in young centres who have been the best player in their team for so long, and hog the ball a bit. He had a particularly unhappy game against NZ Schools.

Yeah Rohan is a flyhalf and played a bit there in the 4th quarter of the trial v. Fiji and went OK. He's in the amateur academy here too. Can't remember his being listed on the wing.

I definitely Cameron Mitchell still has the potential to be a very good Super player. He is big enough now and he has the talent but he needs a bit of luck with injuries. He has been constantly injured and I saw a few of his Shute Shield performances on the wing and it still suggested to me that he can make it in the big league.

I think Apolosi Latunipulu is a few years down the track from playing Super rugby but he is developing quite nicely. I would like to see him play a few Shute Shield games this year to assess exactly where he is at. He reminds me of a younger version of Cooper Vuna with strong carries.

Rohan Saifoloi impressed me with his tackling for a man his size last Friday against the Fiji Warriors. I'd put him ahead of Ben Seymour at this point in time but he needs to get a little bigger if he doesn't want to get trampled by some of the bigger boys on the park.

Tom Kingston looked quite comfortable on the field last Friday and will only get better with more game time under his belt.
