"Fastest Player in the NHRU Sprint": The contestants go to the starting point. Tahs player Deng came in 2nd to Wanderer Lorang. Deng would have won it had he not tripped at the start, at the end I thought he had caught Lorang. Good concept - I hope the sprint is done again next year.

Angry, out of interest what makes the Clubs in the Newcastle comp strong one year & weak the next?

For example how have the Waratahs come on so well this year? And why couldn't the Wanderers with a wealth of riches & a Super Rugby coach do better?

Hi Super Rugby. Apologies for the lateness of reply.

Some clubs simply recruit really well. Waratah recruited some gun kiwi's & in combination with some of their longer serving Tahs premier 1 players they made a good side. The rest of the Tahs teams in premier Rugby were not as successful. Same could be said for the Roos last year who just missed out on the GF, all their other premier teams tended to struggle. A lot of these clubs that do well in Premier 1 due to (partly) their recruitment of overseas players tend to go back down hill if they lose these player/s for the next season. This is pretty much what happened to the Roos this year as I'm sure one of their really good players, "Buman" I think his name was, went to Japan. If premier 1 teams recruit well then there is no reason why they can't compete with teams like Wanderers.

2014 Women's Rugby Teams

Wanderers
Lake Macquarie
University

Teams that were interested for this year but were too short numbers wise (or other issues) was Waratah, Hamilton, & Nelson Bay.

We have already played round one but here's my overview of the teams.

Merewether: They have acquired players that were previously playing for the Harps & a few former Uni players. They smashed Lake Mac in round one & look to have a good balance of speedy backs & solid forwards. They are using a former uni player as their main jumper which I think is a good move as she is pretty good in the line-out. I have not seen Wanderers play yet but the Greens early signs show that if they keep this team on the paddock for the whole year then they are definite front runners for the premiership (they would be my #1 pick).

Wanderers: I have not seen Wanderers play yet (or play against them, that's next week) but they have acquired a couple of Greens props who had originally came from Uni, these girls are veterans. They have also acquired a Lake Mac lock I believe. As I said its hard to judge as I havent seen them yet this year but if they have the same squad from last year, plus the 3 new recruits then I would still rate the Greens as No.1, Wanderers I'd rank #2).

Lake Mac: Lake Mac have started the season with a heavy loss to the Greens. They do not have the coaches of last year, there is a player-coach instead. The team also has a couple of players long term injured including one of their speedy backs that came over from Uni. Another former Uni player in the back line has gone back to Uni. A number of Harps players said they would come over to Lake Mac but that appear to be in word only. Lake Mac seem to be struggling to get & retain players despite being a pretty friendly team. Rated #4.

University: Like Wanderers I have not seen them play yet. If they've maintained the same players from last year they'll have a soild unit. They have re-acquired one of their backs from Lake Mac. Whether they can compete with Greens or Poons remains to be seen. Rated #3.

On a personal note since the Harps did not play this year I decided to loan myself out to Lake Mac.

Well I have not posted for some time here but I have a few updates.

From this point onward all my Newcastle/Hunter posts will be in the "Regional Rugby" thread. When I first made the Newcastle Hunter Rugby thread there was no Regional thread but now that there is it makes sense to put all posts in there rather than doubling up here.
