PFt, everyone knows Gaggs can't be trusted....plus he's probably hearing it from weirdly obscure rumour mongers not in the know :p (this is a joke, if you followed me on twitter you would understand)

In any case, if its canned for 2014 it would be for more prep time for teams for 2015. Though it could mean theres a year in which the ARU could change their mind about the whole thing.

Hoping it is just a rumour, I'll be gutted if it doesn't get up because of the cash.

what about loose $ in ammo from foxtel for nrc? if $ a prob, start with less teams. what is minimum number to start? 6? get this bad boy off the ground!

Well there is no minimum, Foxtel are only broadcasting 1 game per week so the number of teams in the competition is irrelevant as long as there is enough for 1 game/week for Foxtel to broadcast. Hence why i think pushing for anything over an 8 team competition is pointless, the broadcast/sponsorship funding is a set figure and won't be inflated by a larger competition. Realistically they could run with a 6 team competition.

If it does not start this year then I doubt that it could start next year, a World Cup year. That was one of the big problems with the ARC, I believe, the fact that it started in a year when all the attention, and a lot of local supporters, were involved in other things. Not to mention the players (although I don't suppose any current Wobbs would be involved in the NRC).

It would be big blow to everybody's morale if, after all the chatter, the NRC cannot get up, because of lack of interest, or more specifically, lack of genuine interest backed up by adequate investment.

Yet more than one match per week is televised in the NPC and the Currie Cup.

Are you referring to Foxsports televising those matches?

The cost of broadcasting a match isn't the expensive component television, its the match day costs, the filming, having upwards of 9 or 10 cameras, editing, producers etc can cost fox sports upwards of $200'000/match. If you look at events like the Bledisloe, State Of Origin, NRL/AFL GF's the match day costs will cost closer to $1million with additional camera's, sky cameras, those slow motion cameras etc all costing significantly more to operate.

Foxsports would purchase the ITM Cup matches at a bargain price as another broadcaster is already burdening the cost of filming the games, thats why Foxsports can show all those games but are only willing to broadcast one NRC game at this time.

If the ARU can't get it together this year, I honestly doubt we'll ever see a competition like this, which is a shame.

Always wondered if 2014 was trying to do too much too soon, esp after the veto on lone-club bids, while at the same time understanding them not wanting to try launching it in a RWC year.

Really hoping the delay is to do with how many bids to accept, how to schedule it etc rather than whether to do it at all: after all the talk it would make Oz rugby look rather foolish & I wonder if Pulver, who seems to have been pushing this barrow pretty hard, could survive failing to get the comp over the start line.

what are 6 strongest bids of the 11? doubt 6 or more bids are dudds. verdict - rumours seem unfounded. nrc liftoff in 2014.

With Otago University on the back of the Clan in Soup Rugby, Canberra Uni on the front of the Ponies, Bond Uni involved with the sevens Programme, UNSW on the front of the Wicks, UTS involvement with the Gay Gordons, and now Mac Uni being the main sponsor with the Rays, the ARPU strategic vision of alignment with the Tertiary education sector seems to be coming to fruition.

Yeah Greg Harris had alot of conversations with all the universities the teams were looking to get involved in during his varsity league proposal, this passed on to the NRC teams, and apparently he made quite an impression because of his eccentricities.

You'll find all the teams have a link with their regional university in one way or the other

Most of the ACT games for the Pacific Cup are being played at RMC - thinking this maybe ACT's home ground when the 3rd tier starts considering Vikings are not touching it....?
