Players should also surely be held accountable for this as well. Maybe they could be fined as well?

Ok, for all those who say nothing illegal has been done, how come the media are reporting & the storm themselves are even saying that the Cops are involved?

Just for shits 'n giggles?

It's one thing to cook the books a little for a salary cap. It's another to have 2 sets of books, of which is one is kept at the CEO's house.

They have broken the terms of a contract. While that is surely criminal under common law, the fact that they committed fraud makes it a civil case and therefore the cops get hauled in? Who's a lawyer around here?

The Storm won't be the only team doing it.

Waldrom will probably know about at least some of the others.

The coppers have been set on him - he'll need to broker a deal.

This could get very interesting.

Don't know who's police will be investigating, but you wouldn't be doing a deal down here. All of a sudden your happily serving 35 years in the safest area of maximum security, and then... head smacked in by your mate with a set of handle bars from an exercise bike.

Underbelly 5 - the premiership guile (and deception)

Oom Blou - moenie vergeet die "NOT"nie... ;)

Now, a more relevant question may be; is there a criminal offence for directors of a limited company to trade fraudulently and/or recklessly? Because that could be an issue.

Who woulda thought that a game based on poker machines and group sex could be so corrupt?

Slater + Inglis to rebels. that would fix up the fullback and centre worries VERY quickly

the funny thing about this is, when Sonny Bill left, they tried to persue him through the courts and it basically backfired as his legal team argued that due to the salary cap the contract and payment system he was under was a restriction of trade, now they settled out of court and Sonny brought out some of his contract (through a third party) but it was knowledge at the time that the NRL was shitting itself and the buyout was more PR thing than good bussiness.

If this goes to court it could well result in the salary cap being thrown out of rugby league altogether, the NRL players association has already said if there not happy with the rise in it next tv rites then there not going to play, could become very ugly for the entire game.

What a crazy day. I must say at the start I was with Noddy - No salary cap in Super Rugby so no issue. But the more I think about it the more I think Waldrom needs to go. If the Rebels are after Storm fans then why would they follow a team that is run by the guy who killed off their NRL team.

Waldrom must do the only gracious thing in this situtation and fall on his own sword.

Force should make a huge 3rd party play for Inglis, or Rebels. I say we just raid the Storm

Would love to see Slater & Inglis play Rugby, but not if any of the said players are implicated in the collection of monies that do not adhere to their contracts.

Waldrom needs to step down. Brown paper bag season. Heads will roll

Any high profile Storm player could be up to their neck in this. Why all the talk of recruiting them?

Because some of them could be quite good, and they will probably need a home.

Waldron Gone

Rebels act swiftly in asking Waldron to clear his desk
JOSH RAKIC AND CAROLINE WILSON
April 23, 2010

THE Melbourne Rebels this morning will announce the immediate departure of Brian Waldron as chief executive as the AFL prepares to re-open investigations into alleged salary-cap evasion at St Kilda under Waldron's stewardship from late 2001 to 2004.

The Rebels board - which is chaired by Australia's largest media buyer, Harold Mitchell - met within hours of David Gallop's press conference and acted swiftly in asking Waldron to stand aside.

Waldron, the Melbourne Storm CEO of five years, stands accused of being the mastermind behind the NRL club's $1.7 million salary-cap rort. The Herald understands he has agreed to stand down from the Rebels.

The board is expected to meet again this morning before holding a press conference about noon. The Rebels last night made sure of their legal position before announcing Waldron's departure as CEO after just six weeks in control of the fledgling Super 15 franchise.

Mitchell refused to comment, other than to say he did not expect the NRL controversy to affect his franchise's reputation. Coach Rod Macqueen said he had not been in contact with Waldron since claims of his involvement in the Storm's scandal were aired by News Ltd CEO John Hartigan.

''Obviously it's a bit of a shock to everyone, I don't think just us,'' Macqueen said. ''It'll be interesting see what comes out of it over the next couple of weeks. I haven't had any discussions with Brian Waldron. I'm sure he's pretty shocked about everything. I haven't seem him.

''As far as we're concerned it's a rugby league matter and it certainly hasn't got anything to do with rugby union or the Rebels. From our point of view, it's business as usual.''

Former Waratahs and Manly rugby league chief executive Pat Wilson is favoured to replace Waldron at the Rebels.

Meanwhile, the AFL will investigate St Kilda players' contracts during Waldron's three-year stewardship of the club. The Herald understands investigator Ken Wood interviewed Waldron in 2003 over the Saints' departed ruckman Peter Everitt, who demanded more than $100,000 from his former club as he tried to recover money from his old contract.

Everitt welcomed a review of the matter, last night instructing lawyers to contact the AFL in an effort to retrieve the missing money.

''The deal with me was I had a back-ended deal - they couldn't afford to pay me much money in my first year so they upped my salary each year and the big one was the fourth year and they got rid of me - so when I left to Hawthorn they should have paid the difference, which they never did,'' Everitt said.

His wife, Sheree, added: ''Now that we think about it, unlike all Spida's other deals his dealings with Brian were never at the footy club. They were always in a coffee shop or something, and one time we met him at a Christmas party. Not until something like this happens do you stop and think about things like that.''

Wood, now on leave, and football operations boss Adrian Anderson are expected to approach the Saints in a bid to clear any possible discrepancies which might have taken place during Waldron's time as CEO.

The former Melbourne Storm boss worked at St Kilda with acting Storm CEO Matt Hanson, who was yesterday sacked by the NRL club after being found to be involved in the salary-cap rort.

Good riddance! Don't need wanker administrators like that stuffing the Super 15. I wonder if the rumours of Israel Folau moving to the Rebels will quieten down a bit now. Surely Waldron was trying to do a deal to get him there.

Also you can't say that they would be complicit. Do you think they would discuss it with the other players? If they were receiving their money through what they believe is legitimate means then why would they question it.

one of the greatest threads in history, it was all unions fault.

Waldron an AFL/Union plant?
With details of the horrendous mismanagement of the club emerging one must ask questions about the honesty and motivations of the senior executives.

It is well known that Waldron has an AFL background. He is now CEO of the Melbourne Rebels. It seems all too convenient that the details of this rorting come to light only months after his departure. A parting shot on behalf of his new paymasters?

Is it possible that the greatest atrocity against the game has been committed by its enemies, from the inside?

RL is done as a force South of the Border.

This is a momentous event on par with the Super League War. If anyone wanted any evidence as to what forces there are out there that want League dead, there should now be no doubt.

i swear the supporter base of league is made up of paranoid schizophrenics

every single wrong doing is another code trying to get at "the greatest game on earth"

the women who get raped are actually rugby plants, the salary cap rorts, the public drunkedness and drug taking, all probably from pushy drug dealers who have a love for rugby.... they're crazy!
