Melbourne Rebels 2024

Ultimately I think the Rebels players will just be happier at the Waratahs. They are finally in the hands of a stable, competent organisation with a rich history of success, both on and off the field.
Hahaha appreciate you trying to lighten the mood

How many AFL teams are in Melbourne?
9 yet not all are viable, they have to sell games interstate and get propped up by the strong clubs.

Melbourne would be dead if the MCC didn’t bail them out years ago, North, St Kilda and the Dogs have diced with death on multiple occasions.

The big thing is gambling, I think it was 4 corners last year that said 60% of the advertising revenue for the NRL, AFL and Cricket comes from gambling ads and each code gets 10c per bet on the sport. It is a sad indictment on society that as soon as you can’t put a same game multiple on people are less interested in the sport.

While I am not advocating that RA massively opens its self up to gambling it is where the huge wealth gap has been created as the TV deals for the other sports have seen dramatic growth this country predominantly off the back of gambling

Only if you hold the belief that every sports loving resident supports all 27 teams?
There are 717,000 registered members of the 9 Melbourne based AFL teams, that's not including the extra 90,000 members of Geelong

That's almost 15% of the total population of Melbourne

Anyway, moot arguments and I'm not really looking to pull it apart, but was genuinely curious about the 27 number as it seems inflated.

Ideally this thread just bloody vanishes into the distance. I don't know the ins and outs of the lawsuit and probably won't engage with it, but at an emotional level I'm still incredibly bitter about how my team ended up.

Angry at the directors, angry at RA, angry in general. So all the sage opinions posted here aren't really touching the sides for me, and I suspect it's the same for many other Victorian fans. If RA has filthy laundry, air it out and if necessary, rebuild it.

That’s a bit of a stretch now. There is a lot of creative accounting to boost membership numbers. It’s not what it once was that you had a season ticket.

They would have counted AFL and AFLW as seperate that’s 18, the storm, the two BBL teams and WBBL teams then the two state cricket teams that’s 25 already

You could also argue about those VFL teams, the players are paid so it's a level of professionalism but at a much lower level.

No you couldn’t buddy. As someone who has worked in football respectfully you don’t know what you are talking about. VFL players get paid considerably less than local footballers

That number does include Professional motorsport teams. Without them there are 24, which includes AFL, NRL, cricket, basketball, netball etc etc

One entity has audited financial statements and the other hasn't released a set of financials for several years.
End of the day you are kidding yourself if you don’t think RA were aware of the situation. They are equally as culpable as the Rebels. RA just want a scapegoat

This is irrelevant - you're proving that Melbournians love AFL, not that they are incapable of supporting a second or third team at the same time in another sport, just like we see in Brisbane and Sydney.

The rebels did a shit job, but the data says that having a professional footprint in Melbourne is a good idea - if executed well.
