There's talk going out of France that Perpignan's Maxime Mermoz could be coming to Australia. He has pretty much turned his back on USAP and Racing Metro is chasing his signature as well.

I found it on this website
but it's in French.

Thoughts? Are the Rebels the only team that can take him on?

Reds don't have a foreign player. No room in the squad though.

I think every franchise has their 30 though, right?

Good robust footie player and can play well in big matches. I've seen him play for USAP this year - so HB do you meant he will pull the pin before the 2012 Super season or are we talking about his playing here in 2013?

If he goes to the Rebels we won't have to worry about who will play 12. His initials will be MM and it won't be Mickey Mouse - or Goofy.

Does Pretorius count for the tahs? It would be kind of overkill with Carter, Horne, AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) plus emerging talent. Same goes for the Rebels. I'd be pissed if I was Inman or JOC (James O'Connor).

Surely the ponies are the only real option - they don't have an import right? Perhaps Jake hasn't liked what he has seen.

Pretorius is not an Oz qualified player and cannot be counted as a developing player therefore he is the Tahs foreign marquee player.

Harris is Oz qualified through a grandmother who was born here; so he is not counted as a foreign player. Had he played for the All Blacks, JABs or the NZ 7s team he would not qualify - but that is not the case.

My concern with Pretorius was whether him playing for the Emerging Springboks committed him to playing for South Africa.

I am probably wrong, but I thought the developing player allowed players who have no link to play in Australia as long as they are not committed to a country. This allows a player who is from another country to gain residency status and thereby qualify for the Wallabies.

Edit: Re-reading what you have said, I think we are saying the same thing. So Harris is normal status, Pretorius is Marquee (as committed to SA by playing for emerging boks), players who are not committed are developing players?

Hold on.

Wasnt hynes named in the reds original 30? If it is looking like he wont play any rugby in 2012 the reds could possibly cut him from the squad (move him into a coaching role maybe) and bring in mermoz.

Didn't the Reds have 36 players listed? As they are yet to re-sign Ioane and are unsure on Hynes' future.

Either way, Mermoz won't end up down here.

When I said Pretorius is not an Oz qualified player it was because he has played for SA 7s. I wasn't sure of the status of the Emerging Springboks, but it doesn't matter. He cannot be counted as a developing player for the same reasons, either.

An interesting point would be if Pretorius had not played for those SA teams and the Tahs already had a foreign marquee player. Could a 27 year old who was voted the best SA Super player in 2011 and was the top try scorer, be classified as a developing player?

Not with a straight face, but you never know.

Guys the article is referring to "next season" which would be 2013.

If so then maybe he goes to the Rebels in place of Cipriani, who is in the second year of his two year contract. I think I am right in saying that no foreign players are allowed any more than two years at one club.

That was my take on the matter, but apparently the Rebels have dispensation not only to have more foreigners, but also to retain some of them beyond the 2 year limit that applies to other teams.

In the Rebels thread Eyes and Ears mentioned that they could have 10 for 2011, 8 for 2012, 6 for 2013, and so on, but Army Gav remarked that within that constraint the 2 year limit was waived for the Rebels. For example he mentioned Jed Robinson had been signed for 2013 notwithstanding that he is ineligible for the Wobs because he has played for the JABs.

Tom Chamberlain has also been signed until 2013 but he will be eligible for Oz after 3 years of residency. At that time, therefore, he won't take up one of the dwindling foreign quota spots should he be wanted then, and vice versa.

Mermoz says today in french newspaper L'Equipe that he wants to play in Australia next season (i.e. Super Rugby 2013). So that's more than a rumour now.

The Brumbies and the Force could probably make the most use of him.

I cant see the point of him going to the Rebels, Tahs or Reds as they are full of decent centres.

I dont really know how the Force could fit him in (with Nalaga there as the import), so the Brumbies would be the way to go.

He would be an outstanding pick up for the brums, maybe even the force if winston stanley and/or pat Dellit lose form/are flops (though I doubt that will be the case with either).

The problem is the Brumbies have just signed a big fresh batch of players for the next few years...

Among them there are already several potential outside centres in McCabe, Tomane, Kuridrani...

And then there's Andrew Smith, who might be the only one in that position to be up for a contract renewal this year?
