Why do you think Rassie got To'omua? He's still quite raw :nta:

He seems to try everything in his power to be different, and this move certainly is.

It's a silly move I canlt believe there is nobody local and what the has Peter Grant done wrong?

I can't wait to see his face if To'omua happens to play against the Stormers and has a blinder next year. That will be hilarious.

Matt To'omua's rugby education could not have been better scripted. A stint in theCurry Cup is just what the doctor ordered.

As LG stated three years ago he is a brown Noddy Lynagh and IMO his game is suited to Saffer rugby.

He and Quade Cooper are the future of Oz 5/8 play, for very different reasons.

Grant is still their but is playing with a injury in his last few outings. To'omua is only his backup.

Looks all a bit Egyptian or Japanese now. Qoute the only button now to post? Feel free to give us short cuts for the others?

To'omua not the only Aussie in action this weekend
in Saturday's clash at Newlands. Brisbane-based Test referee Paul Marks will handle the match.

So WP beat Griquas on a wet, wet Newlands clubbering them 43-3. To'omua played the second half, Grant switch to 12, de Jongh in 13 , Pietersen to the wing (Chavangha off) and Frikkie Welsch to 15 and they ran Griquas in pieces. He did setup a nice try putting de Jonh in space, kicking OK and look good in defense for such a smallies frame. Honestly can see a lot of potental.

Blue honestly Frikkie Welsch look like a totally different player and stood out on saturday. Cant describe in other then brutal.

This win open up a gap at the top of the log for WP in second spot and 6 points adrift of Griquas. They need one win to secure a home semi and have Boland on Newlands on the weekend follow with a last round match against the Lions away.

Boland at Newlands would be a good opportunity to rest some blokes before the finals. You should beat the Lions in JHB as well... could this secure a home final or would Bulls / Sharks have to lose one as well?

We are sitting in second spot behind the Sharks with 1 point and 6 above Griquas in third.
The Sharks have the Lions at home and Griquas away. If they miss 1 bonus point and we get one it go to point differense to decide top position.

The good thing for WP is that they'll have Andries Bekker back this week and Schalk next week. The youngster lock Steenkamp have played really well and Francois Louw plays so well at the moment. Rassie have turned him into a 6 flanker now with Vermeulen in 7 and Luke in 8 and he sure plays well in that role.

The CC log at the moment

Now they are speculating about Lote Tiquiri. A Stormers backline featureing Lote , Habana & Jac Fourie?

Superrugby
Tuqiri for Stormers or Lions?

It seems Western Province chief professional coach Rassie Erasmus' recent trip to Sydney could pay strong dividends for both WP and his Stormers team.

Two days ago young Brumbies import Matt To'omua showed just what a fine acqusition he was when he excelled as a replacement flyhalf in his debut for Province at a sodden Newlands. It was To'omua's break that set up the bonus point try scored by Frikkie Welsh, and then, just for good measure, he sent out a long pass that put in Pieter Louw for WP's fifth try just a few minutes later.

WP coach Allister Coetzee was enthused by To'omua's performance, almost to the extent that he was talking about girding Province chief executive Rob Wagner into trying to secure To'omua into a longer contract. At the moment he is only set to be in the Cape until the end of the Currie Cup season. Sadly for WP, however, this is all probably going to be pie in the sky, for To'omua is not a player the Brumbies are likely to let out of their clutches.

Another Australian though who could well be playing out of Newlands next year is former Wallaby wing Lote Tuqiri. The former league star, who lost his contract with the Australian Rugby Union earlier this year due to a disciplinary breach, has told an Australian newspaper that he has been talking to the Stormers.

"I'm talking to French club Toulon and may even be playing against the boys next year in South Africa in the Super 14," Tuqiri was quoted as saying.

It has also been rumoured that Tuqiri is in the sights of another South African Super 14 franchise, the Lions. The Lions and WP will be locked in dispute this week over the future of Springbok centre Jaque Fourie, who is determined to move to the Cape while the Lions are equally determined to keep him in Johannesburg. WP have already signed Springbok wing Bryan Habana for next year.
I'd say his changes will be better playing for the Lions because they announced making big names signed in a couple of days.

To'omua will start his first game for WP on saturday against Boland as expected.
Superrugby
WP ring the changes

The Vodacom Western Province selectors have made eight changes to their side to play neighbours Boland in a Currie Cup derby at Newlands on Saturday.

Most of the changes were expected however as the coach Allister Coetzer decided earlier this week that several players who seen regular action since the start of the year should be rested.

The most interesting inclusion is that of the former Australian Schoolboys flyhalf Matt To'omua who joined the Province last week on a short-term contract. He was let loose in the second half against Griquas and he made a good impression.

Coetzee said he expected some rustiness at the start of the match because several players have been on the sidelines in recent weeks for a variety of reasons.

The coach also explained that the players who have been rested need to stay fresh for the team's remaining games which will in all likelihood include a semi-final clash.

A notable inclusion in the side is that of Springbok lock Andries Bekker who has been nursing an injury over the past five weeks.

The regular Province halfback pairing of Peter Grant (flyhalf) and Dewaldt Duvenhage (scrumhalf) have been completely rested and will not even occupy a place on the bench.

The Vodacom Western Province team: Joe Pietersen, Tonderai Chavhanga, Frikkie Welsh, Paul Bosch, Sireli Naqelevuki, Matt To'omua, Ricky Januarie, Luke Watson (captain), Pieter Louw, Francois Louw, Andries Bekker, De Kock Steenkamp, JC Kritzinger, Tiaan Liebenberg and JD Moller.
Reserves: Deon Fourie, Brok Harris, Anton van Zyl, Duane Vermeulen, Bolla Conradie, Conrad Hoffmann and Juan de Jongh.

Luke Watson on Tamooua
WP captain Luke Watson was full of praise for To'omua on Wednesday, saying he has contributed significantly since arriving in Cape Town last Thursday.

“It´s difficult to come into a team and for Matt it should have been even harder. It´s not just a different team, it´s a different country and a different competition.

It´s far more physical in the Currie Cup and he´s had to adjust. We´ve been blown away with his maturity and enthusiasm. What caught the eye was his attitude on defence - he absolutely smoked Sean Plaatjies in that game against Griquas, and the rest of us were, We like what this guy´s about´.

"If he continues the way he´s started he´ll definitely be a viable contender for the No 10 jersey come semi-final time.´

Could not agree more and it underlines the importance of our not having a national semi-pro competition. To'omua should be playing in our version of the Currie Cup, not in the RSA. For one To'omua, who has got a lucky break, there are another 20 young players who should be showing what they can do at this time of the year in a grade of rugby above the club level.

For those who are interested: the WP game is being shown on Fox Sports at 1.30pm today (Thursday).

Paarl, are there quota requirements for these teams? If so, do they have to be South Africans to fit into the quota?

"They" have to be Saffers as far as I know.

Paarl are the quotas official these days?

I thought Beast counted for the Boks? Isn't the rule non-whites?
Beast is on a advert in SA at the moment which starts off something like "South Africa produces some of the best rugby talent around" then goes immediately to Zimbabwe's second finest player

Qoutas: Hell the swear word these days for the sportsmen of any colour. Quick answer is no not official as far as I know and the Zimbabweans will fit in as a coloured player. Its the ANC that use that word and they do have symphaty for Mugabe and huis gang.

Look you have to go detail when it come to this. I know the ANC wants the players in the team to be the same formation as the population but this wont happen overnight. Its a lifestyle change and a practical problem. Practical in the sense that the Blacks play poofball as their sport and the curry eaters cricket and the others rugby. I can honestly say that at the very root of schools they play rugby on merit. Its a bit like a structure thing, the more coloured and blacks goes to rugby orientated schools the more they will get to the top on merit.

The signs is there right at the moment if I look at Paarls situation. We have three big rugby schools here and Paul Ross 30 km away thast always feature in SA Top 20 rugby schools. Now myself have a girl finshed school last year and a 10 year old still in Prymary school and the percentage of coloured kids going to Paarl Gym has been massive between the two kids. This four schools is public schools. Meaning there is no reason that any kid from the street can attend and be educated for free. No school in SA can reject pupils and the poor ones only have to produce a payslip and will charge accordingly. Just to give a example is at Paarl Gym you pay R7,000 per year for school fess and compare it to a private one like Bishops in Slaapstad you'd pay R120,000 per year. That more or less is the current situation. Myself is very positive with the amount of coloured players getting through the structures and can promise you it will get to a stage where we dont even have to discuss this qouta kak. Ashley Johnson was Paarl Gym's first coloured captain. Well he is now on the brink to be picked for the Bokke EYT and will get there on merit. Guthro Steenkamp the first Paarl Boishaai coloured player and there are lots of them following their footsteps. I saw at least 4 U13 black kiddies playing for Boishaai who is outstanding talent. The first level they will be identified is U13 Craven Week and they do get sponsorred with school fees to make sure they get the best coaching and education at our rugby schools. Paarl is lucky because we have a huge coloured community and rugby as much as part of their culture as what it is to the white Boere. You'll also find that our best coloured talent slot much easier with the traditional white Boere lot to what we had at WP with the souties. That changed now with the arrival of Rassie. In fact I think they have a much better rugby attetude and heart as 7 year olds because they still play in the streets like we use to and the white laaities and specially the souties are way more PC and TV spoiled brats.

Thats school level but when it get to provincial level it change. I know for a fact when my kid went to the final Boland trials in cricket they wanted 50% coloured players. I havent found one white sport laaitie or one coloured sport laaitie that did not hate this qouta tag, they want to be there on merit. It will happen fast.

Interesting PB. Thanks for that,

As for the Currie Cup match on Fox Sports in Oz: the advertised programme is not showing. 2 different games are being televised instead.

The WP game with To'omua in it is scheduled again for tomorrow morning but no doubt they will repeat the same ones that have been televised this afternoon.

No problem Lee, I only try and give my honest opinion and this qouta subject is always a very sensitive issue for all Saffers. Trust me I grew up in the old SA and fight a war , had a dad where the AWB was to left for his liking and refuse point blank to speak english, exct. Had to do a week diversity course in the new SA to know there is a new world out there. ;)

Anyway look like the wise thing is Peter Grant to slot in the 12 position. Not only for WP but also for the Bokke. He played that position quiet well in the past and showed it on saturday when To'omua played in the 2nd half and he moved to 12. Look like that was the whole idea by Rassie to get a good 10 for the business end of the CC. To'omua will get his change on saturday to nail the 10 jersey and Grant have a bit of a rest after he had played all WP & Stormers matches and had a bit of a injury.
