Away game vs Gordon, Chatswood Oval, 3pm, 6th April

“Be wary of a wounded dog,” commented MMMs coach Tim Lane at the season launch last night (Thurs), Manly Bowling Club. The men in kilts, Gordon, have lost their coach, John Briggs, just days before the season kicks off. “We will not take them lightly and the team has been working hard at training and remains focused.”

“I believe that in any sport, top teams take a number of years to develop,” explained new MMMs captain, Ed Gower. “Under Tim we have been learning the systems and plays that are now coming together. The fitness training has been tough under the J-Train plus we have better depth in the squad this year. No doubt we will be in the reckoning come the end of the season.”

Second rower, Ed, moved form Gordon to the Marlins a few years ago; “I still know some of the players there and I am sure there will be a bit of niggle going on. We just have to stick with our game plan.”

“Tim has been great for the club,” added Ed about Tim leaving for France mid season. “It’s important to us that what we have been developing is transitioned to the new coach rather than a complete new set of ideas in the middle of the season.”

The MMMs are running out an awesome pack and a fast, skilful back line.

Greg Peterson is back in the second row having played off the bench for the Waratahs this season. Former Force and Harlequins prop, Tim Fairbrother, is back with Eddie Ahololei joining him in the front row, a Rebels contracted player and 100+ games MMMs player.

No 7 Katone Ale, captain of the Waratahs A team, continues the MMMs pedigree of breakaways. Four MMMs No 7s are playing Super 15 this weekend: Michael Hooper (tahs), George Smith (Brumbies) , Jordy Reid (Rebels) and Mat Hodgson (Force). Waratah A utility back, BJ Hartmann, returns on the wing.

Colts president, Graeme Hodge, reports that the squad has been in training since November and we will running out three strong teams. Co-captain of colts 1st grade, Rees Hodge, has been selected in the Australian U20 squad for the world cup in France in June this year.

sadly you're correct. We all know the struggles with Gordon (I like to believe they were too afraid). but 2s/3s get 5 points and an extra week off before West Harbor.

In respect of the OZ u20's there is a final selection camp in Canberra this week for the OZ u20's. If the side has been picked then what is the purpose of having the 40 or so players in Canberra this week. If the side has been picked then asking players to take a week off work or uni when they aren't able to make the side is a bit tough.

I think there are other Manly players going to this camp also so maybe you could let us know who they are

We took the 5 points. Detroying the Gordon scrum for 10 minutes on their line without a penalty try best summed up the refs performance for the whole game.
Not taking away anything from Gordon they played hard or the full 80.

Dave didn't see grade but the colts puton almighty s how winning 69-7 against a Gordon side that tried hard and never gave up. They weren't bad just outclassed. Great games from the 1,7 and 8 in the piggies and from 9,10 and 13. However, all manly players stood up today. Lots of power speed and skill

Dave didn't see grade but the colts puton almighty s how winning 69-7 against a Gordon side that tried hard and never gave up. They weren't bad just outclassed. Great games from the 1,7 and 8 in the piggies and from 9,10 and 13. However, all manly players stood up today. Lots of power speed and skill

With only one game being played at the village made the drive to Chatswood.

1s & 2s were very similar games and didn't flow like the usual Manly game - wet track, first game, ref, and a Gordon team that played hard and got away with spoiling.

2s - Dan Alley, Max Wood, & Damian Reti had strong games and got the boys going forward in the second half, and they strung some good phases together - Alex Northam showed some real spead out wide.

1s - 4 tries to 2, so we took the 5 points back over the Spit. The ref ruined this game, maybe for both teams. Our forward back continually destroyed them at set peice, and at rucks and malls but our ball was continually slowed down, and spoiled. Ref - players have to roll away, there has to be seperation after the tackle, you must enter through the gate.
Gordons forward pack did a great job at playing to the ref interpretation. Pete Gilmore made some strong runs up the centre alway crossing the ad line, but again the phases didn't flow as ussual due to spoiling tactics. Ed Gower didn't follow the refs interpretations either spending about 5 minutes with the ref at the break. The second half have continued in much the same way, Wil Helu came in twice off the blind wing, scored once, and popped a fantstic pass to BJ (i think) who would have scored but it was put down possibly due to the shock of the pass. Kotoni Ale had a very strong game always on the ball going forward, and strong in defence. Ed Gower led a very frustrated dominant forward pack by example.

We took away a couple of injuries - would be keen to hear how the boys pull up?

To Gordons credit they played hard for the full 80 in both games.

Cheers, Andrew Lees; I've seen him ref some quality games prior so was puzzled. The 10 minutes on Gordon's line was like an U6 ref trying to balance out the game.

The Manly Marlins and the Two Blues have a long tradition of fierce battles on the Rugby field, and both clubs have a significant Islander population amongst their player and supporter base. It's appropriate that Parramatta Pacific Day will be held at Merrylands RSL Club Rugby Park as the two Shute Shield rivals battle out Round 3 on April 20. Last year's Pacific Day events showcased some tremendous local talent and this year seems set to be even better. A great range of performers will entertain the crowd between games and some delicious islander food will be hard to resist.

The mighty Two Blues are keen to extend a warm welcome to our friends from the Manly area (and even their Rugby players ) to Parramatta Pacific Day - details on the Two Blues website. I'm told that the long range weather forecasters predict a fine day for Marlin fishing! Get there early!
