Should Mcqueen be held accountable for the Rebel's poor performance at the breakdown?

There is no doubt that Rod Mcqueen was a legend.. IN HIS DAY. The question must be asked, in light of the Rebel's recent THRASHING by QLD reds, is Mcqueen simply experienced in what he does, or is he holding onto something that he should have let go of, at the expense of all the Rebel's players? Any thoughts?

I voted yes, but I'm really 50/50 he simply doesn't have the cattle to do what he would want out there. If the make a few signings then the year or so to come will answer the question.

Main problem is, if he is successful, will Eddie jones weigh him down by grabbing his coat tails again

Yes agreed, there's not much depth there. But some are just not performing and still getting game time.. Huxley for example. They need to be working on their ground work, especially when people like Quade Cooper can be palming and everyone drops like flies!

I voted yes, any coach should be responsible for the performance of their team.
Though I'd give him at least the rest of the season to see if there's improvements in that area.

Macqueen definitely deserves a lot more time to build the side. He made a mistake against the Reds by returning Huxley to fullback and playing Mitchell at 13.

Lets compare him with Hickey for instance who is in his 3rd? year with the Tahs and his team in three weeks can go from contenders to French style surrender Monkeys. No matter how bad the Rebels got spanked at least they were just totally outclassed and outplayed. The Tahs didn't even both to turnup.

I know who I'd take as coach.

Have a think about the reasons Rod was appointed. Compare that to the situation in the AFL re: GWS. To get a startup team in a foreign land, you need a beacon to attract the moths, if you will pardon my excretable metaphor.

In Melbourne, it was Rod. A legend of Australian rugby. World cup winner.

In GWS it was Kevin Sheedy. A legend of the AFL. 6 time premiership winning player (2) and coach (4).

Both have been out of the game for lengthy periods. Both may suffer from having the game pass them by. But in reality the day to day coaching in the first year or so can be handled by top shelf assistants. Rod and Kevin are probably closer to the manager role, if you see what I mean.

After the team has bedded in, say within 2 years or so, my bet is both Rod and Kevin will slip quietly away.....

Wasn't the most optimistic estimate that the rebels would win 3 games this year?
Doesn't that mean they are on track or thereabouts on the best case scenario?

the real rebelution

daz, I would have to agree with you about rod as a 'beacon', but I know for a fact that in his case, he is very much involved in the day-to-day coaching. However, this is to the Rebel's detriment, not only seen in the poor form, but the squad week in and week out (who he has a major role, if not the only role- in choosing)!
Can't wait for more competition in the forwards, bring in some of the boys off the bench for more game time. I've loved Laurie Weeks' work when he's on the field, his scrum efficiency and work rate- priceless! Hugh Pyle too!!! both deserve to start
On Macqueen again, at some point his legacy isn't gonna cut it anymore though. Many have already realised the shallowness of his talent now, and the team, (tireless) supporters and players deserve not to be used like a 'guinea-pig' for this season. Save the patronizing of Rod, the shutting him up by giving him the reigns for a non-professional team. It makes it seem like they don't actually take the Rebels as serious winning contenders for this season. Winning at all even, not the whole competition. Knowing the vigour, enthusiasm and energy of the Rebels supporters (who surely are the best fans of any super15 team), if this news gets out, there might just be a real 'rebelution'

Interesting that in your first post you have chosen to write off a world Cup winning coach and talked up a second rower from Rat Park who is no world beater at all, he didn't star in colts let alone grade. Also I dont understand your ridiculous use of exclamation marks as well.

Wow. Where to start? Ok:

1) The Rebs are a guinea pig this season. Brand new team. Brand new market. The players who signed kinda knew Rod was gonna coach.

2) You thought the Rebs would contend for, or even win the title this year. In year 1? Really? How about you build a team, get some depth, work out your combo's and playing style, get some cohesion and a culture. You know, like every other team that has been around since rugby was first played in Oz. Get the hard yards in. Or would you prefer SANZAR just gave you the title?

3) You do realise the Rebs have won a game already, right?

4) The best supporters in the S15? Wow, all those Reds fans who stuck with the team during the years and years of debt, turmoil, coaching merry-go-rounds and unholy floggings on the park will really sympathise with the supporters who have been miserable for all of 5 minutes.

Some of these 'new' rebels fans make me cringe with their hyperbole and nonsense.

We're barely into the season, have seen a couple of good performances and a few bad ones and people are ready to throw the baby out with the bathwater?

Pull your head in.

He has to be accountable, his role demands it. The thing I will say though is that it is a long term project. They will win more games this year but at the moment they have no depth.

Rod recruited the team - ignored the Beau Robinsons etc and plumped for seasoned, average players. He appointed all the staff, flew around the world spruiking the CREED of REBELS, told the world about the culture he was building. He took both the Head Coaching Job and the Rugby Director position and both pay packets so i would say his finger prints are all over it. Cant hide in history now he has been associated from the start and no one twisted his arm to do it

MacQueen isn't hiding. All the talk is coming from mouthy fools on forums, not from MacQueen.

The fact is the Rebels just don't have the players...

Aside from a few regular performers such as Somerville and Phipps, the team is filled with second rate internationals and players past their use by date...

They should be proud they not only beat the Brumbies (in their second match) but also came close against the Sharks who are one of the best teams in the comp...

As someone already mentioned they're doing much better than the Force and they managed to pinch quite a few top players in their inaugural season...

The Rebels can also be proud in knowing they have the best fanbase of all the franchises...

And I'm not referring to the numbers, but the crowds down there that come out to the games and whether they win, lose or draw they make a hell of a noise and get behind their team...

It's a breath of fresh air amongst Australian rugby supporters where crowds are subdued and boring... or like the pathetic Tahs fans who boo their own team...

It is early days yet to be writing Rod MacQueen off. Shit, Robbie Deans is still 'building' after over 3 years in his coaching job.

The Rebels are doomed. We were stretching things with 4 teams. 5 is ridiculous. Can't blame Macqueen for lacking a magic fucking wand.
