Lote Tuqiri's contract with the Australian Rugby Union has been terminated.

The ARU announced the shock development on Wednesday evening.

"The employment contract of Lote Tuqiri has been terminated effective today," a statement read.

"ARU has treated this issue as a standard employment matter.

"The ARU will not make any further comment on the matter as it may be the subject of legal proceedings."

One of Australia's highest paid rugby players, Tuqiri was contracted to the ARU until 2012.

The ARU had been conducting an investigation into a possible breach of the players' code of conduct, but the circumstances of Tuqiri's sacking were unclear.

seems weird they would allow the investigation to be mentioned in public but not explain this, the timing of it is after news reports so it reaks of a sneak announcement.

the mention of legal action means that he may not have gone just yet, surely if he has breached a minor code of conduct but was on his last chance there would be casue for appeal?

my thoughts are it may be minor but at the same time deans may not have lote firmly in his plans, the ARU might have been trying to cost cut a little more and as a result may have to pay the man a few million more than he was going to get anyway!
