If any concerned Wallabies fans were not already aware of the news, Link has re-signed with the QLD Reds until the end of 2014.

Good news for the Reds and the quality of the depth of WB players, but disastrous news for WB fan's quest to rid itself of the Deans' shackles?

As we still wait for Big Jon's 'internal report', does this effectively mean another 4 year term of Drongo?

Christ, where's me smokes?

Jim Carmichael stated in the SMH article that the QRU would be open to discussion with the ARU in the event that they wish to sound Ewen out for Wallabies Coach..

This changes nothing as far as I see..

Two current links worth a read in this context:

and

In the first of these, and at its end, the documented re-growth of rugby in QLD is fantastic to see. The vision and recent troika achievements of McCall, Carmicheal and McKenzie are impressive. If rugby was managed with this skill and imagination at a national level, in time we would see similar outcomes Australia-wide (relative to each State's starting point, of course).

It's passivist lilly-livered horseshit the notion that 'Australian rugby lacks depth and will inevitably decline...'. The actual core issue is the lack of depth and capability in professional code management and coaching; poor general management and leadership is what's threatening Australian rugby.

Merely liking this post would be insufficient to convey just how spot on you are!!!!!

Either way it's a big fuck you to the ARU. As far as I'm concerned McCall, Carmichael and McKenzie have done more for Australian rugby in the last 12 months than McGrath, Deans and O'Neil have done in the last 4 years.

Ewen has good management, QLD will have to have a succession plan in place is all this says. The options in the big mans favour, he gets a pay out if QLD want to get rid if him, he gets to take the wallaby job if it's offered to him, he gets to stay if it doesn't. Good negotiating.

I think in this regard criticism of the ARU is somewhat unwarrented. Don't forget thay are currently a stakeholder in the QRU & share board decisions until the QRU gets back into the black, so what is good for Reds rugby is good for ARU.
All parties would like to see McKenzie stay in this country, and to not have accepted say an offshore contract after his current term had run out.
So the ARU were if not instrumental, then at the very least supportive of the agreed extension, soas to keep Links in the mix.
And all parties are probably in agreement that if Deans does well up to & including the Lions playoff, then he stays until the 2015 WRC. And I believe in that situation Links will stay on with the Reds, as there is nothing second rate about coaching one of the top Super 15 sides in the competition.

I dont think he can kick and do all coopers tackling... if he starting kicking make him flyhalf McLink!... or at least give him a pay rise...

Maybe Link is doing a better service for Australian rugby developing the large pool of talent in QLD into wallaby stars?

Whether he is Wallabies coach or Reds coach, he will be important to Oz rugby. It's just good to have him in Oz right now.

All this talk is premature anyway...

Who's to say, that by 2014 Michael Foley or Richard Graham havent wont consecutive Super Rugby Championships and in turn placed themselves at the front of the shortlist.
Or what would happens if the next 2 years the Reds fall apart and turn to shit...

Don't be a parrot for Wayne Smith at the Australian, he's obviously been standing next to John O'Neill at the urinal and been splashed/outsized/whatever. He's got an axe to grind, because it's the only way you can explain his tirades against the ARU.

I think O'Neill has been a major asset. He made sure the Melbourne Rebels got up and running, and had enough overseas slots to be competitive - thanks to which they won a couple of crucial home games to consolidate their fan base. He has helped orchestrate Argentina's entry into the Trinations. He and the ARU have obviously been there helping sort out the huge mess at the QRU.

Other things come to mind. He sacked Lote Tuqiri when it needed to be done. He spent money on a scrum coach and scrum program for the Wallabies. He made sure the U20s had a first class coach in David Nucifora, the fruits of which have so far been pretty good.
